‘Idol’ shocker: Pia sent packing
“American Idol” front-running contestant Pia Toscano was sent packing at the end of the popular Fox reality singing competition’s Thursday elimination show.
Theories on Toscano’s elimination abound, but the most popular seems to be that she was so universally praised that voters, thinking she was a shoe-in, neglected to vote for her. Others blame “Idol’s” assumed young female voting bloc, accused of sending home mostly women this season.
Internet news and entertainment sites are reeling from the shock:
Fox News Latino chronicled judges’ comments, including Jennifer Lopez’ statement that “I have no idea what just happened here. I’m shocked. I’m angry. I don’t even know what to say.”
MTV wrote that “All sense of logic was officially thrown out the window … there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the voting patterns on the 10th season of the show.”
The Daily Mail’s wrap-up included outraged tweets from celebrities including Ashton Kutcher, former “Idol” contestant Jennifer Hudson and even actor Tom Hanks, who wrote, “Don’t have an Idol habit, but how could the USA vote Pia off? I may be done for the Season.”
Commenters on various bogs weren’t as shocked, calling the singer wooden and devoid of personality.
What do you think? Are you in the judges and celebs camp who think Toscano’s elimination is a crime or do you think the singer was little more than a pretty robot who deserved to go? Are you through with “Idol” or do you plan to continue watching?
Did America get it right?

I agree with the poster who said people should vote to "kick off" one contestant, sadly. I know it's not very positive-spirit and such, but I think everyone assumed Pia was safe so they didn't bother voting for her. Not that I'm so worried, what with her record deal and all!
All the young girls are voting off the pretty girls and keeping on the cute boys with less than awesome singing chops.

I've never missed a season of Idol. In the beginning, it was a --singing-- competition. It was evidenced by that fact & who won. That all changed when Daughtry got eliminated from the top 4. That's when you could really see that something was wrong. (You can obviously see how he"s doing now is how America --really--feels). It has become a popularity contest with any "teeny bopper" with a phone voting. The whole dynamic has ruined the process. They need to change it somehow.
Pia ---without question---should have been contesting for the overall win. She has an incredible voice, the stage presence will come in time. Don't forget---these guys are not pros---it takes time for the whole package. However, her voice says it all. They got it BAD wrong!!

Never watched and don't ever plan to. Sounds like she got screwed out of a great opportunity.

Pia Schmia -- Dime a dozen. She is more likely to get a modeling contract for her good looks and hair than a recording contract. She is predictable and boring. We need more exciting personalities for American Idol. We have established that we have many talented singers, we need the dynamic personality that goes along with being an "Idol".

Pia was obviously the front runner in this year's competition. She is second only to Celine Dion in my opinion. But the teeny bopper voting habits of this country have ruined the show, and I feel that the season is over and the show is doomed for the future. All of the women are voted off every year, leaving sub-standard heart throbs for the screaming gradeschoolers with cell phones that control all of the voting.
At least Pia will have a record contract immediately, and she won't have to endure the agony of the next 8 weeks.

Voting needs to be changed so that the public votes for the person they think should leave. The person with the most votes loses, like on Big Brother or Survivor. Also, it seems like if you try to call in with a non-AT&T cell phone, you can't get through.
