Chad, please understand that in no way, shape or form did HEB spend six million dollars to run their ads on local airwaves during the game. The quoted ad rate you mention is for national ad buys only, not local ones.

Hi, Jo. You can call me Dale ("Mr. Reporter" is my father's name).
My Sunday column explored that question. One of the subjects I interviewed claimed that these Super Bowl ads are ego-driven vanity projects; another said that the idea that anybody in an ad agency's creative department had the kind of power it would take to get a vanity project on the air is ridiculous.
You can read about their debate here: http://www.austin360.com/television/dale-roe-on-tv-51310.html

Food prices are going up, people are finding it more difficult to feed their families yet HEB can spend approxiamtely $6 million for two commercials to air during the Super Bowl not to mention production costs. Its great that HEB underwrites so many area projects, but wouldn't it be better if they maybe cut some of the food costs for us instead so that we are not starving when we go to the local events around Texas?

Just curious Mr Reporter since you are supposed to know about these things. How do these super bowl commercals get from the idea stage to the television screen. What is the scoop? Are they ego driven by some marketing person who dispite the negative response from a test market still thinks it will work. I just wondering how some of these really bad commericals get on the air on the biggest marketing stage of the year. . Does no one have the power to say "the emperor has no clothes." You know the fable where everyone tells the emperor how well dressed he is until a little boy is the only one who is honest

Thier were only 3 or 4 that were even good enough to watch. The rest were awful. The 2 E Trade with the toddler were good, and the Bud one when they all broke out singing wasn't bad, because it was unexpected, and the Pirates one was good. But That was about it. I was really surprised ...most were mediocre at best! I suppose the best in advertising have been downsized!

I thought the commercials were pretty weak overall, but I did like the H-E-B ad with Jack Ingram & the little darth vader was really fun.
