Austin TV pilot picked up: The Twitterverse reacts

On Wednesday, Noah Hawley, the creator of late, lamented TV drama “The Unusuals” and the pilot for “Generation Y” (shot in Austin earlier this year) was sweating it out publicly on Twitter.

“I am now accepting alternate life plans if my pilot isn’t picked up to series,” he wrote. “Right now I’m thinking cruise ship captain or underwear model.”

Hawley needn’t have worried. Late Thursday, Hawley’s show, retitled “My Generation,” joined 5 other pilots in a sweeping pickup by ABC in advance of next week’s “Upfronts,” in which the major broadcast networks unveil their Fall television schedules.

“Generation Y has officially been picked up to series by ABC. I am thrilled and humbled. Thanks to all who helped. Let’s make TV history,” Hawley wrote, adding, two hours later, “As you may have heard the show has been renamed ‘My Generation.’ Off to celebrate. More soon.”

Hawley told me in a recent interview that he felt it was important to set the show in Austin, and to film it where it was set. If those plans hold, the series pickup will be important for the city, which is seeing locally-filmed “Friday Night Lights” currently filming its all-but-certain last season.

“I did my last show in New York, and I think that any time you can get out of Hollywood to make this stuff you just find so much more authenticity,” Hawley said during that conversation. “There are great locations and people in Austin and great depth of talent in the film community in general. This is my opportunity to showcase the city.”

The Twitterverse lit up with well-wishes.

“exhale! congratulations!!” one Tweeter, identified as a Canadian TV writer, posted. “ALL RIGHT! Congrats!,” wrote another Twitter user, who apparently worked on the show’s sound production. “Lone Stars are on the house.”

Other congratulatory tweets:

“Congratulations! I loved ‘The Unusuals’ so I’m anxiously awaiting your new series.”

“Congrats to @noahhawley! His show ‘Generation Y’ just got picked up to series by ABC. Best pilot I’ve seen this year!”

“@noahhawley ABC is really making some great programming decisions these days. Congrats!”

“@noahhawley Congratulations, can’t wait to watch! I hope you’re not on opposite #Idol!”

“@noahhawley will you use a song by The Who and confuse all the CSI fans?”

“@noahhawley congrats! can’t wait to you guys filming around town”

“@noahhawley: Congrats! Here’s hoping this one will have a longer run than The Unusuals (RIP)”

“I agree with the argument that Generation Y was better than My Gen., but it will have no effect on how great @noahhawley will make the show.”

And from actress Jamie King, who stars on the show:

“THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THE KIND WORDS ABOUT OUR PICKUP!!!!”

Let's close off some streets downtown for filming. That'll really tick off the high-risers! YAY!
