GM Lassberg: No fire at KXAN transmitter site

KXAN General Manager Eric Lassberg is asking us to help spread the word that Tuesday night’s signal outage was not caused by a fire after all.

The station’s signal went out shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday during the station’s Olympics coverage. Shortly thereafter, social media sites Twitter and Facebook began buzzing with queries from viewers and responses from station staff and management that a fire at the transmitter site had caused the outage, which mainly affected customers of Time Warner Cable and those viewers who still receive the signal over-the-air. The station temporarily moved Olympics coverage to sister station KBVO. KXAN service was restored by 3 a.m.

Information that a fire was responsible also led off the station’s nightly newscast, but the station’s Web site now reports that an electrical failure was responsible and Lassberg says there was no fire.
