Voices of Lee finishes 3rd on ‘Sing-Off’

They didn’t win NBC’s vocal competition “The Sing-Off” but the group Voices of Lee, which includes Austin’s Garland Phillips, got a few more chances to shine in the live series finale Monday night.

The a cappella group from Lee University in Tennessee was one of three finalist groups in the finale, after the field was narrowed from eight groups during shows last week. Viewers then voted on the overall winner.

During the finale, Voices of Lee performed with singer Natasha Bedingfield, and, along with the other two finalist groups, sang with Bobby McFerrin. Judges praised their performance of “Stand By Me,” with judge Shawn Stockman saying, “You guys are definitely the breakthrough group of the whole competition.”

In the end, they finished third. Nota, a sextet from San Juan, Puerto Rico, finished first and received $100,000 and an Epic Records/Sony Music recording contract. The Beelzebubs from Tufts University finished second.

Phillips, a health science major at Lee, attended Hyde Park Baptist School in Austin. She is the daughter of Randy and Denise Phillips, pastors at Promiseland West Church. Her dad is also a member of the longtime Christian vocal group Phillips, Craig & Dean.
