KEYE to air Telemundo programming on Channel 42.2

KEYE is going bilingual.

The station will air Telemundo programming on Channel 42.2 beginning Oct. 1, displacing the Retro TV network. CBS shows will continue to be shown on Channel 42.1.

KEYE will produce two local newscasts in Spanish — airing weekdays at 5 and 10 p.m. — for the Telemundo signal. Anchors will be announced soon, according to president and general manager Amy Villarreal.

“Approximately 23 percent of viewers in Central Texas are Hispanic and this demographic continues to grow,” Villarreal said in a news release. “KEYE-TV’s Telemundo programming will ensure that the market’s Spanish speaking audience is both entertained and informed.”

Austin is currently the largest city in Texas — and one of the largest cities in the nation — without a Telemundo affiliate. Cable viewers, however, have been able to watch a national feed.

The Univision network, another Spanish broadcaster, can be seen locally on KAKW Channel 62. It, too, offers local news and has posted significant ratings gains in recent years. Telefutura, an offshoot of Univision, has a local presence as well, and KVUE will add the Estrella network on a digital subchannel soon.

I do like Telemundo but tonight the only progrsm that you could actually here was the local news. The rest there had a sincronisation problem between with the sound. The actores were talking but their actual voice came later or not at all.

I was very hard to watch.

I am disppointed because its the one spanish program that I can get is spanish. I am from Colombia and looked forward to hearing spanish tv.

So let me get this striaight, keye drops the RTN completely due to lack of funding, only to bring another the 5th spanish channel that only 1/3 of the spanish speaking population can understand and probably even less watch it due to the five repetative shows through out the week and repeat during the weekend. In between shows the terrible b movies that are so unbelieveablt terrible.
only at night to show infomercials that not only the RTN use to showed but all the other local channels show

Hi, Anna!

Retro TV is no longer available in the Austin area, and I haven't heard that any stations plan to pick up this programming. Here is my article about the switch: http://bit.ly/vM9O3 Best, Dale.

I am so tired of these spanish stations. If I wanted to see spanish, I'd go live in South America. Keye had a good thing going with Retro, and they Really BLEW it. Retro was something I looked forward to after coming home from work. It was so refreshing to all of us.
Bring it back. If not can someone tell me where Retro TV went to? I really miss it.

I am happy to see Telemundo...sometimes. The programming is not very good. Though I do speak Spanish (as did many of the heroes at the Alamo), and do appreciate finally having some Spanish language TV in Austin, I REALLY MISS RTV! I would like to see both channels.

Although I have no problem with some of those drop-dead gorgeous Latina honeys who now grace my television screen through Telemundo, I really miss RTN. It was kind of nice to get reacquainted so many of the shows I grew up with....

This has got to be about money, not your desire to help a segment of the population. If 26% of the population now watches Spanish TV (and buys all those products)you've probably lost 26% English speaking potential buyers. So what have you gained? Do something useful like getting involved in teaching the Spanish only population English. This is still the U.S - right? You are doing the Spanish speaking population a disservice by accommodating them - leaving no incentive to learn English. My father-in-law was Italian and he was so proud to be in the US he would correct anyone in his home by saying, "Speak English, we are Americans now!" By-the-way, Channel 24.2 is pure porno!

To the KEYE management: I am displeased with the removal of RTV. Even though I have a minimal understanding of the Spanish language, Telemundo is clearly not my choice of programming material. Since you have removed the programming that I find acceptable, my only recourse as a consumer is to answer with my feet and remove all KEYE42 channels from my "off the air" list.

Sus servicios se requieren no más.

I concur with most of the comments below. I miss RTV! KEYE could have put this on a third channel, after all. I pick up the Telemundo network just fine on 5-2 out of San Antonio, so it seems to be duplicative. But the programming is lowbrow. Alfred Hitchcock was great, as were Dragnet and Peter Gunn -- never got to see these when I was a kid. I now have both 42 channels permanently BLOCKED!

My favorite station, RTV is gone and I will never watrch KEYE again. You say 23% of Austin is Spanish, what about the 73% who are not Spanish and love to watch the old classics. I am retired and I wouldn't miss the programs on RTV, staying up late at night. I loved Adam 12, Dragnet, Simon and Simon, The Rockford Files, It Takes a Thief, Daniel Boone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Laredo, McHales Navy, Leave it to Beaver, Wagon Train, etc. You ruined something special, real family programing.

I agree with the others who miss Alfred Hitchcock, The Bold Ones, Airwolf, Banacek, etc. (I went into a temporary decline when Hawaii Five-O was switched-out for something else on RTV while back, but I dealt with it.)
What's the deal here? I thought the big argument for DTV was that we'd have access to MORE channels, not FEWER. If people really want to watch Telemundo that's fine. Those viewers probably love RTV as much as I love Telemundo, but can't KEYE make us all happy??

Friday I came home from school, turned on the TV to watch The Incredible Hulk and there was some scantily clad woman falling out of her dress running around on stage in the midst of a group of dancing males. What the??? I was so completely disappointed as RTN was the best programming on TV aside from KLRU.
No More Alfred Hitchcock, It Takes A Thief, Hulk, Emergency, Kojak, The Bold Ones--move over Grey's Anatomy....
Please bring back RTN.
Trash, whether Spanish or English, is trash. Do we really need more of that on TV?

I am really sorry to see RTN gone, especially since I cannot afford cable. I am 75 yrs of age and love seeing the oldies that don't show so much "blood, guts and cleavage." My grandson became addicted to The Incredible Hulk. Also, It was TV that needed no ratings for the family to enjoy. Is the Spanish programming rated, because some of it is pretty nasty! I would assume if I moved to Mexico I would have to learn the language if I wanted to live there permanently - so why punish English speaking people in the United States? Isn't there a way English could be turned into Spanish but keep the Retro program?

It was a mistake removing the RTN. There are enough Spanish speaking stations already out there. KEYE finally did something good but blew it. If KEYE is smart they would add another station 42.3 to bring back the RTN network.

Hate hate hate the soft-core porn that seems to be all that is on telemundo. All female characters done up and acting like porn stars, mostly in scanty lingerie or bikinis. Disgusting in any language.

I AM SO SORRY THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR AT KEYE HAS DISBANDED RTV TELEVISION. I GUESS IT'S ONLY NORMAL TO MAKE A DECISION LIKE THAT NOWDAYS WHEN PROGRAMS WITH GOOD FAMILY VALUES ARE BEING DELETED IN FAVOR OF JUNK NO MATTER WHAT LANGUAGE. WE DON'T NEED MORE SPANISH PROGRAMMING FULL OF CLOWNS AND BORING ANTICS. WE ARE IN AMEICA NOT MEXICO AND IF THE MEXICANS DON'T LIKE PROGRAMMING HERE, MAYBE THEY NEED TO LEARN HOW TO SPEEK AND UNDERSTAND ENGLISH. I'M SURE IF I MOVED TO MEXICO IT WOULD SERVE ME WELL TO LEARN SPANISH. RTV HAS SOME GREAT PROGRAMS FULL OF GOOD FAMILY VALUES THAT ALL IN THE FAMILY COULD ENJOY. LETS FACE IT TELWMUNDO STINKS. KEYE YOU HAVE LOST A VIEWER.

If I wanted to watch busty weather ladies and grown men dressed as clowns with annoying squeaky voices I'd watch 44.2, 62.1, 62.2, or 24.2 (which used to rock by the way, I loved the live radar action). If I want to watch good old clean television I'll watch 42.2...what!?! Smooth move KEYE!! The exec(s) who made that decision are a bunch of idiots who have no idea of what good programming means.

I also am extremely disappointed that RTV is no longer available as it was my favorite channel. There is an amazing lack of quality programs any more and RTV was a breath of fresh air. Is there not a way to have a separate channel for Telemundo and let RTV also be available? I would like to contact KEYE directly to express my displeasure and borderline anger!

I am so disappointed that you are replacing Retro TV. It was something I looked forward to every day. Shows like those on Retro pretty extinct these days. Is there another channel Retro will make it's home with? Please tell me yes. Telemundo will not be watched in my home. B-O-R-I-N-G!

NO I love Retro TV also. After sept 30th I will not be watching Telemundo nor keye42. I guess it"s back to TVLD. I like watching clean programs.I was watching RTV classic television more than I was watching my cable.

It's one more channel I won't be watching. I enjoy Retro TV because they is no other outlet for these shows that I love. Now KEYE wants to kick viewers like me in the teeth.
I don't speak Spanish so to me, this is just KEYE screwing their English-speaking viewers.
Why not just add a third channel?
The Digital TV conversion was supposed to give us without cable more choice, not less. Now we'll be subjected to crappy telenovelas, variety shows with musicians singing the praises of narcos, and soccer. Some choice. Thanks KEYE, you just lost another viewer for either one of your channels.

It would be ok to ADD a 42.3 but WHY remove RTV from 42.2? I'll mill my Emergency, Adam 12, Dragnet. TVLAND is NOT what it was...all this new stuff.

I cant believe we are getting another Mexican station. Where do we live? Isn't this Texas? I say remember the alamo!! And what is going to happen to RTV? This is the 1 of the only 2 channels worth watching.
Maybe I need to move to a country that speaks English.

I've just pulled 24.2 of my channel list and soon 42.2. 42.2 is the only station we watch on a regular basis. Now it's going away and we're out a station and instead there's another useless Spanish station.

By Tim

September 1, 2009 7:51 AM | Link to this

This would be okay if they were ADDING channels. First they take the weather from 24-2 for more Spanish programming and now they'll be taking away RTN for... more Spanish programming. One of the reasons to get a converter box was for subchannels not available on cable or satellite, but unless you speak Spanish, that is turning out to be a useless reason.

When this is done, only PBS will have and English language subchannels. And that's fine if it didn't mean taking stuff away from speakers of English.

The Austin market may have cracked the top 50 DMAs in the latest Nielsen data, but its over the air programming variety isn't worthy of a top 100 market.

No! I love Retro TV network. It's so nice to have a fun channel without having cable. Sure, we do need Spanish Language TV, but why must my Leave it to Beaver go away? I can't watch another episode of Family Guy or Seinfeld or Everybody Loves Raymond! Ugh!

I'm actually glad to hear about this despite my minimal to poor comprehension of Spanish as a second language, since the whole "Retro TV" network motif has been a staggering failure. What a waste of a strong digital signal that's been - the picture quality of the old shows they run is so blurry and prone to digitization that you're better off watching those shows on YouTube or Hulu! At least Telemundo will actually be watched by someone....
