Random thoughts for new TV Blog readers
I’ve made quite a few new Facebook friends and been followed by a bunch of you on Twitter today, so I’m going to assume that somebody read my debut column. Welcome aboard!
Space in the paper can be tight, but here on the Internet our boundaries are virtually unlimited, so let’s get this conversation started!
What shows are you passionate about? Which do you hate? What TV-related subjects would you like to see us cover in the Statesman? Please post below.
Okay, I need to go bone up on “Jon and Kate Plus 8” for Monday’s big premiere. How will TLC balance the need to deliver fans the show they’ve come to love with the reality that the infidelity accusations which have been burning up the tabloids and chat rooms will almost certainly change it?
I’ll be watching right along with you to find out.
Blogger Charlie at “Interesting Pile” has a list of series marathons running this Memorial Day weekend (including “Jon and Kate”). Check it out here

I would hope to see a lot of reviews/posts of shows that we should be watching but maybe aren't. I religiously read Diane's newspaper column, but somehow missed out on some of the best shows--Freeks and Geeks, Battlestar--because they were never mentioned beyond a small summary in the new fall season lineup piece. I suggest that you take cues from Maureen Ryan at the Chicago Times or Alan Sepinwall at The Star-Ledger, whose blogs I have recently discovered. You need to watch a lot of TV and tell us what the good stuff is (and not spend every column devoted to Friday Night Lights because it is filmed here). Alan had a great piece on Friday about the shows that you wish weren't canceled. I was amazed that I hadn't even heard of a few of those shows! You need to get Austin TV watchers up-to-speed. I should not have to search the internet for TV reviews from other newspapers.

I agree with "yanseen". Periodically I vow that I won't watch *any* new shows until they are renewed. Then I'll watch season one on DVD before deciding whether to watch more. I did this with "Lost" and a few other shows, some of which I never saw because they lasted only one season. I'm glad I wasn't playing this game last year, though, 'cause I would have missed "The Unusuals", "My Own Worst Enemy", "Eleventh Hour", and my fave, "Life on Mars".

I've watched every show of Jon & Kate + 8. I've found it engaging and irritating at the same time - Kate always acting superior to Jon, bawling him out, belittling him, basically a shrew part of the time. Now with all the tabloid news of her basically considering herself a "star", she has gone over the edge of likeabilitiy. Her brother and sister-in-law Jody babysat, etc. and then Kate wouldn't allow them to get paid for the show. It has all become a sad commentary on how greed gets the better of you, and the "down-home Mom" personna has morphed into something that may be very hard to watch in their new season of shows.

I would like you to have some space, either in your column or blog, about shows that have merit but are not going to be seen for very long. Perhaps with hints as to what can be done to change the minds of the station decision makers.
I'm upset that "The Unusuals" has not been renewed. It was funny and human and witty. Good writing and good acting don't seem to be enough to keep a program on the air.
Note "Sports Night".
