AP awards aplenty for Austin broadcasters

Austin’s television stations picked up nearly 40 awards in this year’s Texas Associated Press Broadcasters competition.

Plaques were handed out in a ceremony Saturday night at the Headliners Club.

In Division 2 — comprised of Austin and San Antonio stations — our local TV newsrooms snagged honors in virtually every category, even managing to sweep several categories, including best Web site.

KVUE was the night’s big winner, bringing home 20 awards total, including first-place honors in nine categories. The full list of honors won by Austin broadcasters, courtesy of the TAPB Web site, is below:

Best newscast—

  • Second place: KVUE, Austin. Frank Volpicella. Aired 6 p.m. 12-17-2008

Best sportscast—

  • Second place: KXAN, Austin. Roger Wallace, Brian Sanders & Leila Rahimi. Aired 10 p.m. 9-26-2008

  • Honorable mention: KEYE, Austin. Bob Ballou, Chris Pelikan & Anthony Geronimo. Aired 10 p.m. 9-26-2008

Best weathercast—

Best news anchor/team—

  • First place: KVUE, Austin. Tyler Sieswerda

Best spot coverage/station—

  • Second place: KXAN, Austin. Amber Alert for Adrian Jaimes

Great to see Christine Haas recognized here even though she is not in Austin any longer. She was a fantastic anchor and reporter. Austin's loss is Houston's gain. KVUE should have never let her leave. She and Tyler made a great team.
