KVUE lays off 4, including anchor Jason Hill
Layoffs at Austin’s ABC affiliate have left four employees jobless, including morning co-anchor Jason Hill.
Hill, who was missing from his usual perch next to co-anchor Melissa Gale on KVUE’s “Daybreak” and “Midday” newscasts this morning, will be replaced beginning Wednesday by veteran 5 p.m. anchor Olga Campos, according to Patti Smith, the station’s president and general manager.
“These are extraordinary times and we’ve had to make some very difficult decisions,” she said.
Newly hired evening anchor Terri Gruca will fill Campos’s spot alongside Tyler Sieswerda at 5 p.m. weekdays. Gruca and Sieswerda already co-anchor KVUE’s 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts.
The layoffs of Hill and three behind-the-scenes employees are part of a companywide reduction in force announced earlier this month by Belo, the station’s owner. Similar moves have taken place in recent days at other Belo outlets, including KENS in San Antonio, where 12 employees were laid off, and Houston’s KHOU, which lost at least a half dozen workers, according to published reports. Nationwide, the company hopes to trim 150 positions by next month.
The moves give KVUE a weekday morning newscast helmed entirely by women — Campos, Gale and meteorologist Meghan Danahey — something no other Austin station is doing at present.
“That was not a factor,” Smith said when asked if the change was meant to differentiate “Daybreak” from its competitors. The station’s 5 to 7 a.m. newscast, once a dominant No. 1 in its time slot, has struggled in recent months. “That’s just how it worked out.”

Very sad! We enjoyed Jason's sense of humor and unique style. Every morning he always made us laugh and now it's just your run of the mill the morning show. Bad choice in my opinion to let go of one of the only anchors out there who had some personality.

I have tried to deal with Jason being gone but Morning news is not the same. Jason brought a lot to the table and we, as viewers, appreciate and love him for it. He was very good and delivering the news and while do so he would get us to laugh and smile from how he delivered it. I know layoffs happen everywhere but I don't feel management made the right choices here and we're going to pay for it.
I don't have anything against Olga Campos, but she is definitely not Jason. She needs to quit talking over everyone and get a grip on her facial mannerisms when she is not speaking.
I also want to say that Terri Gruca is no joy to watch either. Once she came on we stopped watching KVUE in the evenings. She has is cold, mechanical and needs to learn how to be a little more laid back.
I truly hope they don't mess with Quita and George, this will pull our house out of KVUE all together as we now only watch Weekend Daybreak.
I also want to note that Meghan Danahey is awesome. I will miss seeing her, but I just can't deal with the changes to the Anchors KVUE mornings and evening news.

Unfortunately, the highest paid probably got the axe in the laying off of Jason Hill and the other employees. Jason Hill's upbeat style & smile went a long way in brightening up my family's morning starting around 5 AM. I wish the new team well, but I will miss Jason.

Oh man that sucks. The morning show is not the same. I thought Jason was great. Olga has the personality of wet bag of hair. I can't beleive they kept her and let Jason go. THe chemistry of this show is way off now.

I have always looked for different things in morning vs evening news. In the morning I want banter and chemistry while I slowly start my day. By evening, just give me the news. While Jason might not have been the best anchor, he and Melissa has chemistry and were obviously friends. I wanted to hang out with them while I drink my coffee. Olga does not give off any "warm and fuzzies" and comes across like she believes she's superior to Melissa and is doing us all a favor by being there. Olga belongs in a "just the news" evening spot.

Glad Jason's gone; it was too frustrating to hear him read a news story. It has nothing to do with race; Quita Culpepper is excellent regardless of race. On KXAN, Sally's giggles are so unprofessional, but to be expected of someone who can't even pronounce her own last name. Surprised to see Michelle Valles pop up so soon on another station!

Okay, race has NOTHING to do with Jason Hill being let go. The guy couldn't read. Never could. And it sure does appear that most of these comments, praising him, talking about race, and taking a hit on the new anchor?,looks like Jason had all his relatives write in. Terri and Jason aren't even in the same ball park. Jason couldn't even read the news for the morning show when fewer people are watching, why in the world would you compare him to Terri who only does the evening news? Come on people......You say, you are done with KVUE......You have 3 or 4 other choices in town.....Go for it ! We at our house are so relieved we can watch the 11:00 a.m. news without putting up with Jason Hill ! KVUE kept him longer than they should have.

I am sad to see Jason go. But come on pepole! You would rather watch stuck up Michelle and Uncle Fred that needs to take a walk??? You couldn't pay me to watch KEYE or KXAN. Fox is ok, but I also don't like all the live bands as another person said. I can't stand Olga-she comes across as though she's better than others and does cut off other anchors. She doesn't mesh well with Melissa. You need someone closer to Melissa's age and it needs to be a male anchor. I guess I will just stop watching all the morning news now as with Jason gone, there's nothing left to watch. I love Jason, but even if he goes to another station, I can't watch him as KVUE was the only station I could stomach.

Letting Jason Hill go was a very poor decision. He made the morning news interesting. Jason and Melissa were a good team. There is no chemistry between Melissa, Olga and Megan. Jason never had a down day. He greeted us every morning with a smile and good news reporting, which helped get our morning off to a good start. Did KVUE bring in Terri to replace Jason? I hope not. I think Terri should be laid off and Jason should be bought back, he's a much better anchor. Teri was the last hired and is the lest desired by viewers. I do not like listening to Olga or Megan. I wish Jason and the other personnel that lost their jobs all the best. I will not watch KVUE news anymore. Belo are you listening?

Okay...First of all, Jason Hill was (next to Quita Culpepper) the most stiff and least talented anchor. He did mis-prounouce words often, and read simple news pieces quite poorly. Before people of color become enraged, know that I am African-American and proud of it!
As for the Terry Gruca negativity. If you have watched KVUE for as long as I have (over 30 years), you must admit that she passes the only prime time anchor test KVUE has had in the past 25 years--that she look like Judy Maggio. Extreme talent is not a must, as they know Judy was the most popular female anchor in Austin, and they want to make sure they always have someone (weeknights and weekends) that are blonde with a boring bob hair-cut.

I watch KVUE every morning every morning. Jason and Ilona were the main reason I chose this station over the others. After my kiddos went back after Spring Break, I noticed Jason missing. I went to KVUE's site to see where he was and it's as if he never existed. I'm very disappointed with Belo's decision and will no longer be watching KVUE in the morning. Olga Campos?? Sorry, but not the way I choose to start my morning. Best wishes for you and your family Jason! You will be missed!

Please people. Jason Hill has to be the worst teleprompter reader I have ever seen. Have you ever watched Jason stutter through his morning newscast? It's incredibly annoying and very difficult to follow him though a complete story. The man cannot smoothly speak a sentence to save his life. I'm sure he's a nice enough guy outside of the profession but he really needs to pursue a career that doesn't require him to read aloud to the public.

KVUE has made a very bad decision to lay-off Jason Hill who was the reason many people watched their news. I clicked back and forth from your news to KXAN's Koda & Kathie Lee, but now I'll watch Koda & Kathie Lee from 11:00 - 12:00 and then watch KXAN's local news and hopefully, everyone who liked Jason Hill will do the same thing. Jason tried to let everyone know that they were important or valued.

As an African American male, it was really a shame to see Jason Hill go. I'm trying my best not to bring up the race issue, but it's hard not to. What happened to diversity? Now, everyone on KVUE are starting to look alike. Oh well, there are three competing news stations. Guess I'll have to pick the lesser of 3 evils!

This is the last straw! NO MORE KVUE for me.
I moved here from the Dallas area last year and the weatherman Mark Murray over does it for severe storms. He does UNNESSARY play by play from the beginning of the storm - usually in Llano - until it ends east of Pflugerville.
The other stations interrupt when necessary
Last week he did it again...over 2 hours! without breaking. I was planning to change because of him. This is strike three. Bye, bye.

I am extremely disappointed to hear that Jason Hill has been removed from the co-anchor desk at KVUE. He and Melissa made a great team and made my mornings enjoyable, (since I am up at 4:45 am) it was refreshing to see smiling polished anchors on. I would grab my coffee and hit the excericse machine and enjoy the news. However, the last few mornings has been nothing less than painful. I may have to switch.

Jason Hill was the worst anchor in town, maybe ever. I can't believe all of these people missed that. He could barely read the prompter and misprounced words and common names often. He would flash that fake, cheesey smile when he tossed to weather, after he stumbled through and butchered the news block. He must have been so relieved to have made it through he couldn't retain his joy. I don't know how Melissa Gale put up with sitting next to him.
He makes all of us African Americans look bad. I stopped watching the morning and afternoon news on KVUE because of Jason Hill. The only mistake was not firing him sooner.

I am deeply sadden Jason was let go. I get up at 4:40 in the morning to watch him as I run on the treadmill. I now have to watch Melissa and Olga, which is not a good combination. They have no chemistry. For example Melissa tripped up this morning and Olga kind of made fun of her. BRING JASON BACK!!!! I majored in Radio/TV and was really inspired by Jason and Quita. Too bad I will not be watching KVUE anymore in my house. Good Luck Jason, hope your martial arts business is booming.

What the heck is going on? I am very sad to see Jason Hill not at my station anymore. I wake up and he is gone. I don't have anything against Olga Campos, but it was nice to be able to work at my computer, and differentiate voices, now it is all women. Was that because KVUE can pay women less money? Where did Jason Hill go? I do wish him well and hope he finds a place that appreciates him. Miss you Jason.

I have been watching KVUE for many years now. Last week when I turned on the TV to watch the news at 6am, I was surprised to see Olga Campos there. Right away I thought "oh no! he left". I immediately got on the internet and didn't see his picture. I was saddened. Then to find out that he was let go! I was MAD!!! How could they! My husband and I loved to see him every morning. He was always there smiling and was great next to Melissa Gale. Why let go of him and not the new girl? I now watach KEYE. This is just SAD!!!

What?! You cannot be serious. My entire family has watched the KVUE morning news for over 20 years. Jason and Melissa are some of my favorite anchors. We also loved Ilona. Olga Campos has never been a favorite of ours. Gruca is an awful evening anchor....where did you find her? She is very BORING. Megan should have been the first to go. We cannot hear her when she does the weather....she needs a new microphone or something. She just does not have a good voice for television and someone really needs to update her and help her with her wardrobe. We love Melissa and Quita. THey are our favorites by far. Please do not let them go. Please bring Jason back. He made the newscast fun for us to watch. I hope Jason finds a job at one of the other Austin news stations. He is a great newscaster and I am sure one of your competitors will grab him up. You have lost many viewers because of this.
I can't believe KVUE did not do the right thing and get rid of some of the other BORING new people. Now that I know the truth about Jason, I will sure be tuning in to the other Austin stations. Might be time to switch to Fred Cantu...he is also a good guy. I cannot believe KVUE did not even give Jason a goodbye from the air or tell its viewers what happened to Jason. We had to find out what happened by doing a search for Jason on Google. I am so glad to see so many people writing in about Jason and how much they miss him. We love you JASON.

I truly enjoyed watching Jason in the morning. He possessed a presence that drew in viewers. Since his untimely departure I have not enjoyed Daybreak as in the past. I am sorry but I think Terri should have gone before letting Jason go. Or reconsider someone who may not have been performing as well. It's odd how you all probably spent big bucks to relocate Terri but got rid of someone who has brought viewers to the morning show. This is not to discredit the works of Terri, however I am sure there were other anchors that the station could part with. It's odd that the only male and african american was let go.

What a shame. He was a good anchor and so much better than Melissa Gale who often flubs her lines and seems to be a deer in the headlights with where she is at. Now there are three women on the morning show and none of them very appealing. What a poor decision by KVUE. Jason at least brought some flash to the morning news. I hate that KVUE has let Jason go and its sad because I had just started back watching this news channel in the mornings and sometimes afternoons. Before I turned my TV off at night, I would change my channel back to KVUE so that the channel would already be on KVUE morning news. Now, I guess I will go back to watching CNN in the morning-Fox, KXAN & KEYE all have morning anchors that bore me, especially Fred Cantu (yawn). I have written KVUE before commending their efforts but this time, I think a business decision error was made. Bring Jason back! He's too good to lose to another station.

What?! Are you kidding me?! I have watched KVUE morning news for more than 15 years. Jason and Melissa are some of my favorite anchors. Olga Campos? Seriously.....And Gruca, could you have found a more boring snob? What are you people thinking???!!! BRING BACK JASON!!!!!

I watch KVUE every morning and I will miss Jason Hill. I am disappointed that Olga Campos will be there instead. I do not think I will enjoy watching as much now that Jason is gone. His presence added a male point of view to the program. What is happening to us these days?

I wrote Patti Smith-GM @ KVUE, she does not care. Let us see how much she cares when loyal Jason Hill views switch to another network. Ratings....... If they are worried about economic hard times then why don't they put a hiring freeze on all jobs????
So what Jason made mistakes. That is what I loved about him, he connected with the viewers.
KEYE TV will now be my news network. Good luck Jason, I hope another Austin station picks you up.

Sorry to hear of the layoffs. I enjoyed Jason and Melissa as a team. If I remember right, there is a no competition clause in those "contracts" and Jason, if he stays in Austin will have to take a year off to come back to this market area, just as Judy Maggio and Fred Cantu had to do.
So now I don't have to choose between stations anymore. Hello Fred and K-EYE for my mornings!
Good Luck, Jason

How could you get rid of JASON HILL?????
I have been so impressed with him. He was the BEST on your morning newscast - and I have been watching him ever since you hired him! You threw away your best talent. Where did he go? I hope someone in Austin picks him up - then I will watch him on that station. I never thought I would care so much about a news person, but wow, I am flabbergasted that you let him go.

I think the KVUE should have had the professionalism to announce to the viewers that Jason Hill would be leaving KVUE.
Now that KVUE has all women on the morning news...I'm at a loss to viewing the news. I just cannot listen to a bunch of women first thing in the morning...and I am a woman.

I cannot believe Jason is gone. I watched the show because of him. I am very sorry he left and now there isn't a morning show I would consider watching. I love Fred Cantu but I cannot stand Michelle Valles. I can understand why she was let go before she landed the gig at K-eye. K-eye should let her go and hire Jason Hill. Jason Hill you will be missed and Kvue has made a huge mistake by letting you go.

Finally. Jason Hill has been amaetuerish from the very beginning. He had the attitude that he just won the lottery by scoring the anchor position when he first started and it showed. The word "fake" would best describe his style. From his struggles to reading the teleprompter to his insincere grandstanding to every news piece was unabearable. Think telemarketing TV persona.
Melissa was once a solid anchor when she was teamed up with Fred Cantu many years ago. But ever since Phil Scott co-anchored with her, she has lost her edge. Phil was a jerk during the broadcast who would always be sure to joke and point out his co-anchors flubs. This left poor Melissa stuttering and have an almost mental breakdown during the live broadcast.
Olga is a professional as is Quita but they both tend to be robotic. I think Olga or Melissa will be moved to a different time and replaced with a male sometime in the future.

Wes Burd, I disagree that BELO is a strong company with great management. They lost $330 million dollars last year, they are $1 billion in debt, the stock is junk and worth $0.55. This is not the position of a strong company. This is the position of a company about to go bankrupt. Regardless of what any of you think of Jason Hill on the air he was a great guy, a family man, honest and sincere. He will be greatly missed.

So to be front and center at KVUE, you have to be blonde. Look at all of their recent hires; Terri, Meghan, Tyler, and the one that left to go to Houston (can't think of her name right now.). All are blonde. Was I the biggest fan of Jason, probably not. I am a guy after all. Did I watch KVUE because of the Jason/Melissa team? Hell yes. All females in the morning. Looks like The View is coming to Austin. I am sure he will be just fine. Luckily he has a gym that he owns, so he is not gonna be broke any time soon. But if he decides to stay in Austin, I am confident another station will be smart enough to snap him up. God bless, Jason.

Very interesting... a majority of the postings below show how we only comment on the things we dislike after the fact. If we sang Jason's praises on message boards while he was anchoring at KVUE, I guarantee you management would have had second thoughts. But I guess it's simply human nature to voice one's dislikes. Proactively paying a compliment would take too much effort these days...

WHY was Jason laid off? He was one of the most intelligent and personable anchors KVUE had!
Too much competition for the remaining and newly hired anchor from him, I guess.
I will not watch KVUE news again and will pass this on to others who thought KVUE was a fair station.
Jason will not have a problem finding a BETTER job.
I wish him well. Have faith, Jason, another door WILL open.

I can't believe they let Jason go. I refuse to watch Olga no matter what newscast she is on. I've heard she is the most difficult of all the KVUE on-air personalities to work with. Ms. Gruca seems nice but she is so boring to listen to. Her voice is monotone and quiet! Appointing Quita would've kept me as a Daybreak viewer, but now I'm moving to KXAN in the morning. Good luck to Jason Hill. I hope someone picks him up soon.
And just FYI, I have seen Mr. Hill in the grocery store on the weekends and he is STRIKING to look at. I was pleasantly surprised after only seeing him in a suit on t.v. He is a nicely-built, physically fit man. Hey, if you men can talk about the hottie female newscasters, I can comment on Mr. Hill!

My husband and I couldn't believe you let Jason Hill leave! He is the main reason we started watching KVUE when we moved here from Belton! Jason has "a special something" that nobody else on Austin TV has. He also has a good spirit and the ability to make a day sunny for viewers. That's a HUGELY important quality, one that's sorely needed everywhere. Oh, well, you'll figure this out eventually, I hope. In the meantime, we're switching to another channel. We love you, Jason!

I can't believe Jason is gone! What are you thinking? It makes no sense that you would hire a new news anchor (Terry Gruca) and let Jason go. He was the only bright spot in morning news and the only reason I watched KVUE. Now more than ever Jason's humor is desperately needed. I will miss him terribly and will not be watching KVUE. Instead I will be searching the other stations in the hope that Jason will find a new home here in Austin where he will be appreciated. Just seeing Olga this morning in Jason's chair (this is when I realized what had happened) dragged me down. This is not how Austin needs to start the day. It was like 2 disaproving Mothers staring at you giving you nothing but bad news. KVUE is now # 1 in "mourning" news.

Jason Hill was good...for comic relief! I will miss the way he improperly read the teleprompter, fell asleep on screen and then woke up and yelled, "THAT'S RIGHT!" when he woke up(totally fooling the viewer, every time!), and adding his personal commentary and insight to virtually every news story. I will miss his skillful interviewing technique: not asking a question but simply restating the obvious...you sly fox! In Jason's honor, please punctuate each of these statements with a shoulder shrug.

Very, very intersting. Let Jason go. Now we'll have all women. Wall Street lays off women and KVUE lays off Austin's only black Anchor. Having all women on the moring news - is this suppose to impress women? I only watched the news because I thought that Jason and Melissa were a good team. If they needed to lay off anyone why not MiKe Barnes and his all white sports staff. Guess Austin just doesn't have any blacks to do the news(Anchor)or Sports. Getting rid of Jason Hill was a big mistake. He comes across as smart, professional and seems like a really nice guy. Moving Olga Campos to mornings is an even bigger mistake. She is awful as the 5:00 anchor. She's a good reporter but a terrible anchor for any newscast. She stumbles constantly through her script, I can't imagine how bad she'll be in the mornings. Although I'm basically a K-VUE fan, I'll tune to Michelle and Fred from now on. Sorry K-VUE, but this was a really bad move and a dumb decision.

Being a veteran broadcaster I sympathize with both the employer and employee who are equally faced with difficult times. Running a business and especially a broadcast business in today’s environment is extremely difficult. When you lose 30-40% of your revenue base in less than 6 months you have to cut back or go out of business. While it is always tough to make these decisions and even tougher to live with them, they are necessary. Belo is a solid company with great management both locally in Austin and corporately in Dallas and these tough decisions are based on economic factors alone, not race, gender or personalities. Although if ignored, could result in all employees being laid off.

Some day soon we will tune into the one of the major cable news networks and say, “hey that’s the guy that used to be in Austin!”
I could sense there was change in the air at KVUE when Teri Gruca came onboard with her HDTV-ready, fresh faced appearance.

In addition to Jason, a morning producer and two technicians were layed-off last Friday. There were lay-offs back in February, also, two technicians, sales exec, graphics artist and a lot of unfilled positions. The parent company, Belo, lost more than $300 million dollars last year, is $1 billion in debt and the stock has been downgraded to junk ($.55 per share the last time I checked). Belo has been reducing staff at a brisk pace since 2007. Can you really lay off enough people to make up for losing $330 million?

I don't like *anybody* on KVUE morning news, Jason and Melissa especially. They are both have very unprofessional delivery (reading?), like anchors you'd see in a market much smaller than Austin. Jason made unfunny jokes, didn't come across as sincere, and didn't really seem comfortable. Melissa's not much better. The BEST, the most professional, the one who's been around the longest... Actually Quita is on the air Saturday/Sunday mornings....but doesn't surprise me that they got rid of Jason. His humor was a bit dry at times, but he and Melissa made a good team. Gonna suck seeing Olga drag down the mornings...you need a guy/girl doing the news, not two women. It only took 25 minutes for the first quota counter to show up. Perhaps we should get lists from each of the local stations along with the person's chosen racial affiliation to make sure that we're meeting all of the requirements of the quota police. On that note, Obama needs to get that culture czar appointed tute suite so that she can make sure that cultural institutions like KVUE comply with all of the mandates of the affirmative action lobby.

Jason was cheerful, witty, and offered his talents to special segments of the news like car information. Olga will not go anywhere because she's married to a news executive. Since you are keeping Melissa, I beg you to hire a stylist to help her with her hair; she needs bangs. It is different everyday.

I always liked Jason. Sorry to see him go. Another reason to tune out KVUE. It has gone from the best to the worst newscast in just a few years.

This is incredibly sad. Not to mention that KVUE is now down to only two African-American reporters, one who basically only comes on on Wednesdays (Quita Culpepper)and Shelton Green. Actually, come to think of it, are there any other African-American reporters at any of the other stations? I can't think of any.

Didn't Terri Gruca just recently come on board? Why not "lay off" the more recently-acquired employees? I'm sure Jason Hill would have transferred to another shift to cover her loss.

I can't believe that of all of the no-talent people at KVUE they get rid of one of the best newsmen in Austin. One that actually has personality.

If they would report more local news and not so many commercials maybe it would help bring up watchers, they used to be good but now the only reason I watch it is for the weather.

Well, I wish him the best. I found him to somewhat irritating, anyway.

What a horrible decision. Jason is fantastic; Olga is like a wooden statue with no personality. KVUE, this decision may cost you some viewers.

Does anybody actually watch these shows anyway? Who has time? Due to my remote location behind some hills, I can't receive the local stations. A couple of years ago, they were added to our satellite service and I tried watching them. It was so amateurish, I spent the whole time laughing. It was painful. I have spent over 30 years in the media business and I can say with confidence that the level of professionalism is at an all-time low. Stations are hiring cheap on-air talent (using the term loosely) and getting what they pay for.
