Time Warner yanking 19 cable channels? Happy New Year!

If you woke up this morning to an ominous crawl on one of your kids’ favorite cable channels, you know that Time Warner, the major cable provider in Central Texas with some 300,000 customers, is at it again.

Seems like only yesterday (actually it was only a month ago) that Time Warner had a smackdown with LIN TV, which owns our NBC affiliate KXAN. At issue was money, of course. LIN wanted cash for carriage, and Time Warner didn’t want to pay. At the end of the face-off, however, Time Warner did pay.

Now it’s Viacom, the media giant that has 19 cable channels on Time Warner — including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV and VH1. The message that greeted viewers of “SpongeBob” this morning and “The Daily Show” late last night said that all of the Viacom channels will disappear from Time Warner at 12:01 a.m. Thursday if an agreement is not reached.

The last time Time Warner was in this position we lost our NBC station on cable for a month. The breakdown will affect 13 million Time Warner subscribers nationwide, which you would think would be a very big deal. This is, by the way, a national corporate confrontation, not anything that the Central Texas Time Warner folks have anything to do with.

Viacom has asked for fee increases from Time Warner about 25 cents per subscriber for its channels, according to the Associated Press. Time Warner is refusing, claiming they would have to pass on that increase to customers.

Here is the full list of Viacom channels that could go off Time Warner at midnight tonight:

Comedy Central, CMT: Pure Country, Logo, Palladia, MTV, MTV 2, MTV Hits, MTV Jams, MTV Tr3s, Nickelodeon, Noggin, Nick 2, Nicktoons, Spike, The N, TV Land, VH1, VH1 Classic and VH1 Soul.

Negotiations are either ongoing or not, depending on which corporate statement you believe.

Time Warner says the two sides are at the table, trying to work things out. Viacom insists Time Warner is not negotiating at all. The truth may lurk somewhere in between: negotiations are ongoing, but nobody is prepared to compromise.

Can’t we all just get along?

What is this ATT thing a few people are talking about? I have been unhappy lately with TW because of signal problems with our HD converter boxes. And naturally I get a tech who must be in India or something. Seriously, what is TW thinking???

If TW gives Viacom the increase who will be next? Each and every channel will want their piece of the pie. It is never going to end.

I am looking for a new way to bundle my phone, computer and tv. Where do i sign up?

Cable has been the top dog for so long they think they are the only game in town. I hate Satellite tho. Part of my family has it and is really bad.

So don't fall for that Direct TV bull. It turns out if you want ALL the channels TW provides you end up paying MORE than cable.

Word to the wise about satellite. But let's check out this AT&T thing.

TW should restructure their programming pricing so that these costs are passed along to customers who subscribe to these channels. Why doesn't TW and other prividers break down the subscriptions into more choices?

In 2003, I got tired of seeing my TWC rates slowly increasing with no increase in service. I fired them in May 2003 and they followed with several attempts to get me back. I have been with Direct TV since then and pay about the same but get a movie package and have been pleased by the service I get. Recently I upgraded to HD and they added the DVR and HD channels AT NO CHARGE!!! Can't beat that!

People! I was lucky enough to be able to hook up with U-verse in '07. I saw trouble coming with TW. I know U-verse is not available everywhere, but when it comes to your area, get it. It's got all the channels, the whole-house DVR, and the internet service is available in faster packages now. TW's day is passed.

I was upset until I saw what channels they were pulling. We don't watch any of those channels (we are a Playhouse Disney family in the morning). I was with TWC for the KXAN thing, but this makes me think I was wrong. Viacom is asking for 23 cents per subscriber. That does equal millions for TWC, but it shouldn't effect the customer at that rate (but I bet TWC is going to make us pay 10x the amount/subscriber if they settle). Suck it up TWC, put your customers first. You're already way overcharging us.

The KXAN was enuff. If this happens, that's it. TWC isn't the only game in town.

The solution to all of this is simple: Pay for each channel you want to watch. Those who watch only Comedy Central will only have to pay for one station (say $1 per month). Others, who want 100 stations will have to pay more.

For less than $50 you can get an indoor antenna that will provide you with the local stations in HD, and you will be free again.

And if we lose those channels I want a price reduction. Failing that I will go to Direct Tv or Dish. I'm pretty sick of how TW does business. No NFL channel, always arguments with local stations and now this Viacom BS.. Time Warner has to be one of the worst managed cable outfits going.

If these channels are available on the other providers (which cost less in most cases than Time Warner) then why is Time Warner saying they will need to pass the cost along to customers? No. They will need to get competitive on pricing and accept less revenue.

Let's see - the NFL won't negotiate - it's all KXAN's fault - Viacom won't negotiate. The only thing in common is TIME WARNER. I go North in the Summer. Comcast - same channels as Time Warner + the NFL Network + no channel shutdowns - $20 LESS PER MONTH THAN I PAY HERE. ATT U-verse is looking better & better!

Hey Natalie -

So if TW pulls 19 channels from my service will you proportionately reduce my bill for those days they are off air? I bet not, cuz though pennies a day add up, huh? They all add up to a windfall for your employer while the consumer gets the shaft.

A few weeks ago, I had to wait all day at home for a repair guy who never showed because some dropout customer service person typed my number in wrong. TW nicely offered me $2 in compensation for missing a full day of work.

You should be ashamed of who you work for Natalie, not shilling for them online.

What the hell? Time Warner is becoming the most incompetent company in Austin. It seems like they offer fewer channels than the local competitors at a higher cost. Their technology is mediocre. Comcast in Houston has better HD channels that TWC. If I weren't locked into this two year contract w/ TWC, I'd leave in a second. Instead of blaming the other side, Time Warner needs to learn that it is a luxury in these economic times. If they continue to ignore their customers, they may find they have few left.

My wife blew her stack when she heard this. We enjoy Nick, TV Land, and Comedy Central and they promise to deliver these channels in exchange for our payment. If Time Warner can't deliver what we've paid for, they shouldn't expect to get a complete payment from their customers.

I had Time Warner for 16 years. Finally dropped it for one of the satellite services. Should have done it years ago. Not only is it cheaper, but the level of service is outstanding. For 16 years I reglularly and stupidly took off work to deal with TWC "service technicians." My reception was never remotely suitable for more than a few days at a time. One TWC "service tech" told me that I was stupid for subscribing to TWC. He was right!

This really isn't about TWC but Viacom and its crappy channels not pulling in the ad sales. I vote that we just pay for what we watch and let the rest of the crap go down the toilet. CALL the FCC and complain.

"...Time Warner... is at it again..."?

Seems to me all Time Warner is trying to do is keep its costs down and not jack up the cost of its service to its customers. This is how the big boys play, and to pick on Time Warner like it is their fault is an irresponsible thing to say.

For those of you that think you won't face this issue with Uverse or Dish or Direct at some point, you are naive.

Does anyone know if these channels disappearing is grounds for getting out of a contract with Time Warner? I think it's ridiculous that we'd be expected to stay in a contract where Time Warner is no longer providing what they originally agreed to provide in the contract...

TW should have asked it's customers. I'd easily pay 25 cents to get Noggin back. If it's not resolved in a few weeks, I am switching to ATT UVerse as many people will do. Sorry TW, but I feel no loyalty to you and you better lower my cable bill by 10 bucks.

To April: Viacom is not asking you to pay (thru TWC) an additional $4 per month for 19 channels. They're asking for 23 CENTS per month.

To NatalieTWC: Sorry but an additional $39 million per year divided amongst your 13 million customers IS pennies per MONTH per customer. If Viacom pulls their programming TWC won't be paying them anything at all. Will the savings be passed on your customers? I doubt it.

I personally hope TWC and Viacom fight each other until they BOTH go bankrupt.

I have Time Warner and am looking for something else! They have gotten outrageous with their fees and they mislead customers. I signed up for their packet deal (phone, cable, internet) for X amount. I made sure to ask if it was a promotional deal or that would be my rate. I was told that that was the rate. 1 year later, it went up about $15 and when i called I was told my "promotional" deal was up. When I told them what I was told when I signed on, I was basically told "oh, well, uh, sorry, they told you wrong...." I WOULD LOVE GRANDE TO COME TO BASTROP!!!!!!

SO we'll only be charged an additional 23 cents on our cable bill is that right TW-does anyone remember when cable was deregulated and cable was supposed to get cheaper? Does deregulating still look good to everyone? And SAmLAm go suck an egg. People who can't get over having a black, Democratic, smart man for President (and believe me the black is more important to SamLam than any other part of his complaint)need to sit back, shut up and let him do his thing and if he messes up, we'll deal with it then like we have to deal with the mess we find ourselves in today after Georgie Boy.

If TW removes the channels, are they going to replace them with others? or, gasp, reduce the monthly fees? Uh, no, doubtful on both counts...I personally wish Grande serviced my area. When I moved, I originally had Cox which had the channels I liked and was a heck of a lot cheaper!! A few years ago TW bought out Cox and we were forced to take TW or go without (I'm not crazy about Dish or Direct, but that's just me) They are screwing us anyway they can!!!

Statement From Viacom Regarding Renewal Negotiations With Time Warner Cable

NEW YORK, Dec. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Time Warner Cable's continued rhetoric and posturing is disappointing and unproductive. We have made it clear that we welcome a credible and meaningful discussion that respects our viewers and the value our programming brings to Time Warner Cable. We remain ready and willing to engage. It's time for serious talk - before the viewers become the victims.

Scott, you're exactly right. Broadcasters and cable programmers alike seem to be looking to cable subscribers to boost the revenues they're NOT making through their ad sales.

My name is Natalie Tate and I work at TWC-Austin in communications. We believe it's outrageous for Viacom/MTV to expect additional payment for a product that provides no new/added value - and to the tune of almost $40 million at that.

i let the nfl and nbc things go as i'm generally happy with my service here in austin. however, it's gettin' to be a bit much, they're really starting to stand out as the greediest large provider out there. and the whole "we'd have to pass the cost on to our subscribers" isn't really true, at least for 18 months or so. that 2 year agreement they made with so many of us works both ways.

I can't hardly stand to watch MTV anymore. I am 35 years old and have seen it deteriorate in quality and content since the mid-80's when I watched it often. The shows are sexist, stereotyped, silly, raunchy, and often rank. The old days of actual videos are gone. If their ratings are down, then that is an indicator of programming that isn't meeting people's interest!

I am really angry about this. Absolutely the only reason I even have cable is to watch Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert on Comedy Central--I rarely watch TV otherwise. TWC has contracted with us customers, who are paying dearly, to provide certain services, and to pull those channels would be a breach of contract. We should launch a class-action lawsuit. I am ready to leave TWC over this.

My name is Natalie Tate and I work in communications at TWC-Austin. Just remember, Viacom/MTV is saying they want mere pennies per day, but that adds up to millions upon millions of dollars each year - about $39 million more than they already receive. Not exactly pennies, is it?

When companies like MTV and others ask for unprecedented and unmerited increases for the same old product, that affects the services that are provided and the costs related to those services.

If you live in San Marcos or South Austin, go with Grande. The only reason I have time-warner is because my apartment comes with free cable and they use time-warner. Grande has the same channels (minus News 8 but plus the NFL Network) much better service, won't rip you off like Time-Warner always does, and best of all they're a local company based in San Marcos. If you don't live in a Grande serviced area you should still do everything you can not to subscribe to Time-Warner...part of a conglomerate that cares nothing about anything except how much profit it pulls in.

It can't only be me that is fed up with Time Warner's shenanigans. Why do they not just pay these channel providers what they are due. Just another huge company soaking up all the profits like a sponge. It was enough that Sunday Night Football was missed for several weeks, now this. I want my MTV.

I'm really getting sick of Time Warner, and thinking seriously of switching to Dish or Direct TV. They make us pay for countless channels that no one watches or cares for, and then hold out for pennies to other channels like these and NFL Network! We NEED menu pricing where people can choose what they want and don't want and pay accordingly! This latest crap will be settled with TW giving those companies the pennies they seek yet raising our individual prices by $1.00-$2.00 each--just like always!!

All those channels are worthless anyway, good riddance.

Times like this make me glad I don't pay for cable. Some companies just can't get past their own greed for green.

I would pay an extra fee for Time Warner to keep these stations off permanently. They broadcast mostly degenerate trash content.

Hey we all have to admit that we are the slave to our televisions and the DVRs attached to them. Time Warner needs to realize that nothing in this world is free. We surely know that by what we spend every month for our cable! I am reaching out to AT&T U-Verse to become more readily available because it is cheaper, less equipment and channels that we don't have to miss for a month! Come on AT&T, here is another opportunity to take more business away from Time Warner while yet another, "I want my cake and eat it too", negotiations continue to make the richer get richer. Everybody should have options.

Time Warner will just pass these increases on to us so hopefully Time Warner wins. Wonder if these channels know what is going on in the world right now? Not sure the public will pay more for non-essential channels.

Yet another reason to dump Time-Warner and go with ATT U-Verse, which also happens to know something about customer service, unlike TW. One of the happiest days of my life was returning that cable box!

The decision to leave TWC and get U-verse was a decision that I'm still majorly pleased with. Better channels, and much cheaper. Service isn't quite as prompt, but we've only had one problem in the past year. To all you idiots that will say I'm an AT&T employee (which I'm not) I'd like say I'm just trying to help people out besides you.

Well, we are seeing a trend here. Time Warner=poor service and greed. Viacom=poor programming and greed. Gee, who do we root for?

I've had enough of Time Warner! My New Years resolution is to drop them. Hello Direct TV!

Does the PUC just sleep through these events? Hello!!! We're getting ripped off and you're asleep at the wheel. We paid for these products and if TW can't give them to us they need to give us our money back. Why didn't TW have a contract with Viacom if they intended to resell their product. Time for a class action lawsuit against TW.

none of these problems plague the satellite companies and they're cheaper with more hd channels. voip is cheaper through other carriers also.

I was in the store late last night and decided - to heck with TV - I bought a couple of good ol' books and figure that will be my New Years resolution - read more for entertainment. They will pay and pass it on to the consumer and still air garbage TV. And, with economic woes - people have nothing good to watch for selections. I suppose Obama will save us on that too. Know anyone that can turn my tube into an aquarium?

Maybe the "management reconstruction" should have been at Time Warner and not Dell.

This is ridiculous. I will be leaving Time Warner immediately. This action shows a weakness in negotiating on their holding company's part and we cannot guarantee this will happen again given their recent issues with NBC. I hope the rest of Austin recognizes this and does the same thing.
