Christine Haas leaving KVUE for Houston’s KHOU

M5X00169_9.JPG

Christine Haas, anchor of top-rated KVUE’s evening news, is leaving the station in August to anchor the weekday morning news at KHOU in Houston. Both stations are owned by Belo Corp.

Rumors have been swirling for months about Haas, with speculation that she would be leaving Austin for a Top 10 market soon. When a morning anchor job opened up at WFAA in Dallas, Haas looked like a likely suspect, but that didn’t happen.

Now it turns out Haas is heading south instead of north.

“I am thrilled with the opportunity and so excited to make this move forward in my career, but it was a very, very difficult decision,” Haas said Monday night. “I am leaving behind so many friends, and Austin had truly become my home.”

Haas came to Austin from Minneapolis in 2003, replacing Judy Maggio after Maggio jumped from KVUE to KEYE.

I have seen her on Channel 11 in Houston. Why are some of you so hateful? Would you treat a man the same way (just wondering)? She seems to do a fine job. I have no problem with the lady.

I miss Christine a lot. She was definitely a class act. Other than Tyler Syswerda and Olga Campos, none of the others can even compare to her. She is a great gal and there are vicious people who will diss her because they didn't like that she did such a good job in her investigative reporting. Good luck, Christine. I left Houston over three years ago, and they have some good people over at KHOU and I'm sure you will fit in very nicely.

I won't be shedding at tear with her departure. I saw her evolve from something fresh and new to someone totally full of herself. She reminds of Dallas women when I lived there. All looks but no substance. She is the epitome of Don Henley's song Dirty Laundry. "She can tell you 'bout the plane crash with a gleam in her eye."

There is certainly alot of strong feelings both ways here. I guess there would be since this is Austin. A local news anchor is someone you see on a daily basis so people come to believe they know them. They also become local celebrities. Not being in that field I cannot say whether she was "good" or not. I have personally always watched KVUE (just can't bring myself to watch the others, I have tried even when Judy left) and have seen alot of anchors come and go, but I still keep watching. As long as they report the daily happenings it doesn't matter who delivers it. If she is looking to advance her career and some people do, moving to a larger market is a good career move. If it works out for good for her. Why does everyone care.

Kevin Peters left for Houston, Melissa McGuire went to Dallas, Walt Maciborski (sp) went to Atlanta, and now Christine Haas goes to Houston. Why does Austin seem to be a stepping stone for such good talent?

HOLLOWAY responds: We're a relatively small TV market, at No. 51. Ambitious TV types want to leap to larger markets, and Dallas and Houston are Top 10.

"Vince" is not, nor has he ever been, involved with the American Association of Police Officers. With that in mind, I'd ask you to read again the article to which he refers:

http://www.americanassociationofpoliceofficers.org/standards-practices-by-lt-c/

And regardless, shouldn't any victim of Ms. Haas's grossly irresponsible and under-handed hatchet pieces have a right to be upset with her? She knows in her heart of hearts that the truth has never been her top concern, only the next local Peabody.

Why does Houston have to get stuck with a mid-market piece of "talent" such as this? KHOU & KTRK have done a fantastic job pulling from other top-10 markets in the past decade... There had to be better candidates out there.

Ahh this all makes sense. I worked with with Christine on an investigation a few years back and she was top notch. In fact, I have followed her work since then because of it..now I now understand why there are such malicious people on here...they were the ones exposed ... is my bet. If people involved in lawsuits from attorney generals ...are upset they were exposed by a good reporter -- then of course they would say mean things about a nice woman like Christine. Maybe they should read what others are saying about them too. After all - this is a public forum, right? http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/news/atoz/article_1036195.php

Ms. Lensford, nice try...but...wrong. People posting critical comments here are not "jealous". They're pointing out that Haas is a very attractive, but typical TV news anchor. She routinely flubs her delivery and is only marginally better than Austin's current measuring stick of mediocrity, Michelle Valles. They sent her out a few times a year to log some alleged "investigative" reports, which were largely lame. Like other upwardly mobile transient TV news chicks, she never intended to stay here. Austin is a stepping stone market for news babes who hone their acting skills and looks, and then move on.

I really can't believe how mean people can be....I can't. Christine was/is the best anchor in this city. I have thought she was too good for this place for a long time. There is a reason she is moving up -- I truly believe people are mean to her because she is gorgeous and has brains to boot. Christine, I hope you know that people are just jealous of your success -- we have loved watching you and have never heard anything but professionalism from you. Don't let jealous people get you down. I'm guessing the folks who want your job are the ones "creating" these messages.

To "Really?"--you nailed it. My family also loves to watch Christine mess up nightly...not necessarily difficult words, but sometimes "a," "it" and "the" (among others--a recent favorite was when she described a "contentious" city council race as "conscientious"). It happens every single time her glazed (but perfectly made up) eyes try to focus on a teleprompter. You can set your watch by it. I'm bummed because I wanted to start a blog showcasing her all-too-predictable bloopers, but now she's leaving us. Not to worry--in the brief time she has left on KVUE, I'm confident that she'll provide me with enough material to compile a four-hour "memories" reel. She has a terrific colorist, but oh, if she only had a brain. Pretty is as pretty does...

I quit watching local news years ago. Too many egotistical under-30 kids who want to be on tv and live in Austin. I'm glad you are one of the very small few who have the personality, the voice, and the visual to make it in this business. The rest of the market's reporters and anchors seem to be along just for the ride...for no apparent reason.
Remember where you came from, and not where you're going. For you will get there.
Blessings....

I worked with Mari Alvarez in El Paso and she would be an excellent candidate for the job. She's professional, talented, and what I calla real journalist. TV stations would do better for themselves if they hired proven reporters as anchors rather than just the pretty faces.

I am astonished at the level that some people will go to knock down another human being. People should be ashamed of themselves for behaving like that.

I believe that Christine has won more awards at KVUE than any other reporter has ever won in Austin. She is obviously being recruited by bigger cities because of these skills. Not only does she possess a star quality in delivering the news but her stories are always thorough and interesting. For people to make spiteful attacks on someone that is enjoying success in her field is just completely unAustin-like.

KVUE is going to have some big shoes to fill with her absence. Tyler is great and is going to have to have to carry that station until they find a replacement.

Wow, what a significant pull both ways on someone's personal career choice. We don't get this kind of response when there is a local council election. Let the lady have her career - its already a tough market for anyone in television news broadcast. Yes, she is indeed a gorgeous lady who happens to have a rare opportunity to advance her career. Its what anyone wants in their own career - a promotion or advancement. The viewer market will determine her future, so let her enjoy her next reward. I'm sure it won't be long before viewers are hating the next anchor.

Christine's move to Houston isn't about KVUE viewers or non-viewers. It's about Christine's dreams, one of which is shared by many of us--to be successful in her chosen career, and to be a good provider for her family. Christine’s industry gets paid by advertisers who want viewers to see their products. To that end, Christine has what it takes. KHOU sees it--so do national level broadcasters. Christine won’t likely retire in Houston. For me, I’ll miss watching you Christine. Good luck in Houston.

Congrats Christine. You are a talented communicator and journalist. I have enjoyed watching you over the past few years. You are more than a talking head--you are a pure journalist. You'll be a tough act to follow, and no one in KVUE's newsroom could do it. Time for some new blood--as long as it is a solid journalist. We have too many anchor types in this market with no reporting skills sitting on the anchor desk trying to fly because of their supposed looks. They're a dime a dozen. Austin deserves better. Lucky Houston.

Hate away, folks. You're just jealous because the Haas is heading for bigger and better things and you're stuck making $30K, or less, working at one of Austin's craptastic TV stations. The long list of awards she's won shows she's not just a "newsreader," as some of you claim.

I saw Christine and her husband and son out one day and they make a gorgeous family. Talk about Ken and barbie! And they were so nice! Wish you well from Georgetown, Christine. Hate you are leaving but we are always glad for anyone receiving a promotion. However, we agree with the ones that Ogla is NOT the one to replace her - she is not a HD person or one to really give the news and for goodness sake don't even consider MV from KXAN. She is why we don't watch that news station.

I think KVUE needs to do some more housecleaning though....they've already ran off a few good reporters, and now they've lost one of their prime celebrities - they lost Rudy Koski to Fox7 (pretty bad if one of your better reporters leaves for the lowly Fox station). I'm sure though they will find someone to properly replace Christine, whether they actually use someone from in house or raid one of their other stations

I am amazed at all the chatter about her leaving. Other than waiting for the weather to come on, I haven't watched the local tripe shows ('news') except for a few ocassions when I was working at my desk and the remote was just too far away to change the channel to M*A*S*H! Who cares?!?!? I mean really? But these people must love you guys. It's your kind of passion for these personalities (NOT journalists) that get them their 6 figure salaries. There will be another hottie down the line as soon as KVUE can raid a smaller market. So just sit tight, or hang loose, whichever you prefer.

Christine impressed me most with her investigations and most recently a story on a girl who almost died after her mother o.d'd and almost killed her. It was the best story I have ever seen on Austin news. I wrote her to tell her that and she replied with gratitude. She is so talented and I can't wait to see her on Today show soon! I might actually watch KVUE again. Not a fan. Her "investigative" reporting was at best skewed toward fear-mongering and at times just flat out factually inaccurate or misleading. But, as is often the case -- especially in local TV news -- if it bleeds, it leads. I guess I should give her credit for knowing what sells and always positioning herself for the next big move and angling for awards, not substance.

Christine wrote several stories and did investigations while she was at KVUE. This isn't the 1970's, and she's not a female Ron Burgundy - anchor jobs are harder than they used to be.

In Great Britain, TV anchors are more accurately referred to as "news readers." Indeed, they are pretty faces, good actors and in the bigger markets, even good anchors -- but they are not journalists. Journalists know how to ask questions and write stories. Anchors know how to ask scripted questions and read stories.

Congratulations to Christine Haas and I wish her the best with her new job in Houston. Austin is losing an excellent journalist and I have no doubt that we will see her someday on CNN, Fox News or another one of the national cable news channels.

And to all you snarky people who are bashing Christine’s success because of her good looks:
There’s another broadcast medium for journalists who are “no so easy on the eyes” - it’s called RADIO.

Furthermore, it’s a fact that people who care about their appearance are promoted faster in their career than people who go to work looking like an unmade bed, so maybe you should look in the mirror to see where you have “room for improvement” before annual review time at your own job!

Several years ago Christine came to my rescue when the faulty 2.7 liter engine on my Dodge Intrepid had to be replaced at 46k miles because of oil sludge. She aired a story about my experience and another local person that had the same problem. After the story aired and I sent a copy of the broadcast to Daimler/Chrysler I ended up arbitrating a settlement. I hope the best for her and her husband who did the camera work on the segment; I just wish she didn't have to endure Houston to climb the ladder.

I guess before one throws stones, one should learn how to spell. As for not breaking a big story, I remember her reporting from Washington D.C. at one point because an investigation she did was entered into evidence at a congressional hearing. Big deal. No offense to Ms. Haas, but there's nothing particularly challenging about looking hot while you sit in a chair, strike the appropriate emotional tone, and read words that someone else wrote for you. Amazing how people fawn over attractive but largely unskilled performers like this. It's like changing a light bulb: just as she replaced the outgoing chick of the moment, another babe will be plucked from obscurity to take her spot. Yawn.

Christine Hass is NOT a journalist or a reporter --- She reads a teleprompter. She's in that position because she can read & she's got the typical anchor hosterette look. Its just that simple -- she's never broken a big story or done anything noteworthy.

that sucks...really liked her. she could have been the next judy maggio. don't think she'll like houston but that probably isn't her last stop.

Austin has always been a jumping pad for journalists....Judy Maggio and Ron Oliveria are the only ones still left that have been in Austin for a long time...so it isn't surprising that she has left. There are several up and coming reporters at KVUE already that can easily fill her spot....Mari Alvarez was an anchor in El Paso...but whatever they do, just please do NOT make Olga Campos her replacement....

There has already been talk about Ron Oliveria jumping up to the national level, but I don't forsee that happening anytime soon

good luck to Christine

What Haas has going for her is her looks. Exactly how did she demonstrate 'journalistic excellence' other than sit in a chair reading a teleprompter and looking good? Tell us, please!
Wish her well getting up at 3AM and heading to KHOU to 'read' the news. KVUE has a good reputation for locating a 'like' replacement. Sorry to see her go, though.

What a great loss for Austin...this woman is destined for the networks. She is a fantastic journalist. Doubt KVUE will recover from that loss.

It was obvious from the moment Christine arrived that she wouldn't be here forever. Just too darn good. Five years, I think, is a lot longer than most would have expected. Congrats, Christine! You'll love Houston. And my condolences to the folks at KVUE. You've got some big shoes to fill ... and no obvious internal candidate.

Her perky always smiling face reminded me of Mary Hart of Entertainment Tonight. It's hard to take a crime story seriously when Miss Perky is smiling although way through talking about some grisly murder. Austin's gain, Houston's loss.

You're a fine reporter and great anchor, Christine -- all the best to you in Houston. We'll miss you in Austin.

See you at the networks!

Finally, Holloway got a scoop. Too bad she doesn't pay more attention to local news, the reporters, the anchors, etc. Jeanne Jakle style. Please do more TV reporting like Jakle's!

No big surprise here. I don't blame her for moving up. Next stop: Morning news on networks...or perhaps Today show co-host. It could happen. She has "it". Best of luck.
