KXAN’s Tonya Kerr quits
Tonya Kerr, KXAN TV’s morning and noon news anchor, resigned Thursday after the early morning broadcast and had left the station as of mid-afternoon.
News director Michael Fabac says the parting was amicable and referred us to the following statement:
“Tonya has been a valued member of the KXAN team since 2004. Her decision to leave is based upon family obligations.”
Fabac said weekend anchor Sally Hernandez will join co-anchor Chris Willis on the morning newscasts beginning next week, and a search has begun for a permanent replacement.

I'm struggling to stay with KXAN news programs as I have been a dedicated viewer for over 20 years. I miss Dan Robertson and Jim Bergamo, and would love to see stronger weekend morning news/weather anchors. As for weekdays ... the real reason I watch - Hadlock, Spencer, Rutherford, and Swift. If one of thse guys leaves ... I'm outta here!

The comment by Lexus shows what an ignoramus (s)he must be more than anything else. That "big sleepy Mexican guy" is a well-respected and much loved figure in local news because he IS a good anchorperson with a distinct personality. How would local TV news be any better with even more vapid, bland, suntanned and capped-teeth dimwits cluttering up the screen? Get over your bigotry and be more receptive to people of all cultures/ethnicities/body shapes reading news off a teleprompter already...or better yet, read a newspaper.

I too, will miss Tanya. I watched her in Houston on KPRC everyday... and then we moved here to Austin, and so did Tanya. Good luck to her and her family!!!

This town is RIPE for one media outlet to dominate local news events and partnerships. (When the big, sleepy mexican guy on KEYE is voted #1...holy geez this town's media needs a makeover!) The statesman's marketing dept must be asleep at the wheel when it comes to local events and partnerships and I don't see any tv stations or radio personalities expanding their footprints either. It will happen, though. Someone will step up and realize this market is untapped and will win tons of local viewers, readers and listeners ( and advertising dollar$)by showing some personalities, sponsoring many events and highlighting their people.

I was wondering what happened to Tonya this week and then googled her name and found out what happened. what a loss! She had a real presence on the set and will be missed. If they had to let anyone go, they should get rid of MV. What a joke she is - always giggling, trying to crack jokes - be a professional!

This does it for me. I have seen Kxan get rid of many people since I have lived in Austin and I can't take it anymore. Tonya Kerr and Dan Robertson were two of the best. I will watch another station. Whoever is running the show must be a real jerk who should pride himself on his unbelievable ability to make really bad decisions.

After returning from a long trip this month, the first thing my husband and I noticed was the obvious absence of Tanya Kerr on the KXAN's morning news. I looked at the website to see if there was an explanation there for her leaving, but saw absolutely nothing. So, I "googled" her name and found the information and comments here. For whatever reasons, her leaving is a huge loss for all of us. Good luck, Tanya.

The loss of Tonya Kerr is HUGE to KXAN. They let a true pro go. It was obvious that Tonya was not comfortable with Chris Willis. The whole show changed when he was added.
The 6pm news witrh MV is a joke. I haven't recovered from the loss of Dan Robertson and now the best thing KXAN had going for it...Good bye...hello Keye and Kvue...

The morning show started downhill when they decided to try be big city, with the new set and Chris Willis sitting beside Tonya rather than Shawn...Tonya and Shawn were a great team....they were what Austin was about...I've lived in New York and San Francisco, these guys were a small town and family approach to the morning....we didn't need the new set and an attempt at going big time....Tonya was the best, too bad...

We hated to see Tonya leave KXAN. We seldom watch KXAN but we did watch the noon news. It seems as if M. V. is always giggling, or trying to make a joke. Robert is serious in giving the news but M.V. ruins his anchoring.
We will continue to watch KVUE until things change at KXAN.
However, we are happy to see Mr. Scott on the weekends.

I watch the KXAN news every morning. I think it is an insult to the intelligence of their viewers to try a cover-up/false reason like they did. Obviously if it was amicable she would have given some notice and they would have recognized her years of service on her last day on the air. Either they fired her or she got mad and quit. At any rate, she will be missed.

Obviously there is a lot more to this story than we will ever know. Someone dropped the ball. I thought she was the best news broadcaster in Austin for any time period.

Tonya will be missed. She has done a great job on the morning and noon news shows. Most of us have been there with those pesky family obligations. Hope everything works out for her. I wish her well.

I will miss her. She has been one of the reasons I've enjoyed the morning newscasts on KXAN. The three of them always seem to work well together.
