McCoy enters spring drills as starter at QB
Coach Mack Brown said redshirt freshman Colt McCoy will be the starter at quarterback when the Texas football team begins spring practices Monday.
With Vince Young readying for the NFL draft, Brown said naming McCoy as the starter will give incoming freshman Jevan Snead a chance to adapt to the college environment.
“Colt has been here and he has some experience with the offense while Jevan has only been on campus for one month. They will both work with the first team during the spring, though,” Brown said.
McCoy’s last game action came during the 2004 high school season at Class 2A Tuscola Jim Ned, which he led to a pair of state finals appearances while compiling a 34-2 record over three seasons.
Texas announced that the following players will not be available for spring drills because of injuries: redshirt freshmen safety Ishie Oduegwu (right foot); junior wide receiver Billy Pittman (left knee); sophomore linebacker Nic Redwine (right knee); and sophomore tight end Peter Ullman (right knee).
Senior cornerback Tarell Brown will be limited in workouts because of an injury to his right arm.
The Longhorns return 14 starters (7 on offense and 7 on defense) from a team that went 13-0 and won the program’s first national championship since 1970. Texas will enter the 2006 season with a 20-game winning streak, tops in NCAA Division I-A play.
All spring practices will be closed to the public and the media, Brown said. The spring game will be played April 1 at Royal-Memorial Stadium.
