Big games endangered
related
It was hard reading between the lines as blurry as those lines are, but I can’t help but get the feeling that the days of the Texas-Ohio State football showdowns are numbered.
Mack Brown indicated Thursday that Texas has “struggled” to find big-name schools that want to play the Longhorns, although the UT administration is on record as saying it wants to play only like-minded, high-minded schools on the academic front, forgetting, of course, Texas’ recent lackluster graduation rates.
So here’s an all-out appeal for decent to strong intersectional opponents to beat down DeLoss Dodds’ door to solve this quandary. Personally, we’d love to see some games with Penn State, Michigan, Florida and California, not that we have anything against Sam Houston State.
“We’ve called so many schools that it’s hard to find somebody to play us,” Brown said. “It’s a real problem. We had two or three teams back out on us. I know we have UCLA scheduled.”
Texas has also had talks with Boston College but has announced no games with it or UCLA.
Asked if he likes games with opponents as worthy as Ohio State, Brown said, “I like it if we win it.”
The other scheduling possibility, one we applaud, is a ninth Big 12 game, although Mack rightly predicted that the lower-tier schools would rather schedule a Division I-AA team or a bottom-feeding I-A school than risk another loss against a team such as Texas or Oklahoma. An extra league game has been on the docket, but we’re not betting on it.

Applaud Big12 game 9 all you want. Mack's right. Why in the world would a North team like, best example, Iowa State, want to endanger a bowl berth ($), give up an easy home possible sellout vs a Northern Iowa ($), to go play a zero-u or Texas on the road?

The NCAA should look at the way the NFL does it. Half of everyone's games should be in conference and the other half should be based on how they did last year. The stronger teams play the better and the weaker play the weaker...
Then they'd have to decide the national championship by play offs and strength of schedule. Of course, since we're on un-charted territory, this may take some time to perfect. I don't have all the answers but am willing to try!
