Time running out for Bush to pardon Border Patrol agents

With few days remaining in his presidency, lawmakers are urging President Bush to pardon or commute the sentences of two former Border Patrol agents serving time in federal prison.

The agents — Jose Alonso Compean and Ignacio Ramos — are serving 12 and 11 years, respectively for shooting a Mexican drug runner and trying to cover it up.

Supporters say that the agents were wrongly convicted for protecting the United States against a criminal illegal immigrant.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a California Republican who has taken up the cause in the House, held a press conference this week to urge the prosecutor in the case — U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton of the Western District of Texas — to support commutation.

Rohrabacher said: “Mr. Sutton, we are asking you to look into your heart as a prosecutor and advise the President to commute the sentences of Ramos and Compean so they will not spend the next ten years in solitary confinement.”

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, on Thursday also said that the President should commute the sentences.

Cornyn and Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California sent a letter to President Bush last year asking for a commutation of the sentence. The letter followed a Senate hearing which examined the case.

Mr. President do what is right:

Do what’s right to restore the morale of our Border Patrol Agents in the field who’re protecting American citizens from border jumping criminals while defending the sovereignty of our USA.

Do what is right to restore the lives, that your administration persecuted, of our former Border Agents Ramos and Compean.

Do what is right and free Ramos and Compean now. “Final Push Underway for Bush to Free Border Agents” “Sen. John Cornyn is making a final plea to President Bush to free former Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. In an open letter to the president, Sen. Cornyn notes that “because of the excesses of the prosecution against them,” Ramos and Compean “will continue to sit alone in those cells for another decade.”

Cornyn is not alone in his efforts to help the former agents. GOP House members are also expressing their frustration with President Bush’s inaction, with Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) saying that the “biggest black mark on his legacy will be if he closes the door to the Oval Office and Ramos and Compean are still behind prison bars.” There are only a few days left before his legacy regarding Ramos and Compean is known.

As background, Agents Ramos and Compean shot an illegal alien as he was fleeing back to the Mexican border. The illegal alien, Osvaldo Aldrete Davila, was in the process of smuggling approximately a million dollars worth of marijuana into the U.S.

Finally a little good news; consideration of their case is preferable to continued stonewalling by our FedGov. DOJ considering commutation for Ramos, Compean “Attorney who makes recommendations to Bush has opened file on border agents” ..…The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a file on imprisoned U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean and a commutation of their sentences is under review, the office of agency pardon attorney Ronald L. Rodgers confirmed to WND. Rodgers spoke directly about the case by telephone with Stephen J. Eichler, J.D., executive director of Jim Gilchrist’s Minuteman Project Inc..
..…Eichler initially called the DOJ pardon attorney’s office to discuss the prospect of a presidential pardon for Ramos and Compean. The men remain confined to solitary confinement in federal prison serving 11- and 12- years respectively for a 2005 incident in which they fired on a drug smuggler as he fled back into Mexico after bringing 750 pounds of marijuana into the U.S. near Fabens, Texas. ..…”After speaking with a U.S. pardon attorney staff coordinator about the serious nature of this matter, my call was immediately put through to Mr. Rodgers himself,” Eichler told WND in an e-mail.
…..”We had a very frank and open discussion regarding the plight of the two Border Patrol agents,” Eichler said. “During the conversation, Rodgers mentioned that agents Ramos and Compean may be eligible for commutations of their sentences, though they are not now being considered for pardons.” …..Eichler said Rodgers “was very informative and courteous.” “We got right to the point,” he said. “The truth of the matter is a commutation is a very strong position for Ramos and Compean to be in.” …..Rodgers said the former agents apparently are not eligible for a pardon, which would nullify the punishment. But they might be eligible for a commutation, which would result in a reduction of their sentences. …..”It could be very possible that the pardon attorney may recommend to President Bush that Ramos and Compean’s sentences might be limited to the time they have already served,” Eichler said. …..”In this scenario, President Bush could commute their sentences and end their jailhouse nightmare,” he added.”

More pressure is being brought on our soon to be former President Bush to do what is right and “let our people go.” Free Ramos and Compean Mr. President.

10 congressmen urge clemency for agents ‘Time is short, Mr. President. Let’s right the wrong’ …..“Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., today called on U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton to support a commutation in sentence for imprisoned Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean.
…..”Mr. Sutton, we are asking you to look into your heart as a prosecutor and advise the president to commute the sentences of Ramos and Compean so they will not spend the next 10 years in solitary confinement,” Rohrabacher said. “As Johnny Sutton said in his own words, this punishment is excessive,” he continued.
…..”Millions of Americans, members of Congress, Republicans and Democrats have spoken. The time is short, Mr. Sutton. Time is short, Mr. President. Let’s right the wrong.””

It’s a start at correcting a hideous miscarriage of justice and ending their unjust persecution.

Bush cuts sentences of Ramos, Compean Agents convicted of shooting smuggler will be released from prison March 20

“Thank God for this commutation,” said Joseph Farah, editor of WND, who launched a petition and letter-writing campaign that re-energized the Ramos-Compean issue in the last 30 days of Bush’s term. “This will end the sleepless nights for their wives and children. This is the first step toward making these families whole, again.” His petition collected more than 40,000 signatures by the time today’s announcement was made, and the letter campaign produced more than 3,000 FedEx letters to the White House. It described how the agents “are now serving outrageously long prison terms for shooting and wound, in the line of duty, a fleeing illegal alien drug smuggler trying to bring almost 800 pounds of marijuana into the U.S.” source -
