Should Apple allow charity apps on iPhone?

An opinion piece in today’s Chronicle of Philanthropy takes Apple to task for not allowing charity apps on the iPhone.

According to the story, “Apple has said that it does not permit charitable donations to be made through its iPhone applications because it has no way to verify the legitimacy of nonprofit organizations that might receive donations through its media platform.”

Hmmm. I’m not buying it.

To be perfectly clear, I am not saying that Apple is morally obligated to put charity apps on their iPhones. Yes, I think the world would be a better place if everyone did absolutely everything they could to help those in need. But companies, just like individuals, pick and choose their efforts and apparently Apple doesn’t want to mess with charity apps.

So be it. Other companies do it and consumers are free to buy their products.

But come on, Apple. Are you really basing your argument on quality control? Because if you’re going down that road, you really need to ditch the YouTube ap. Have you seen the kind of garbage people put on there?

What’s the real story here?

Readers, viewers reach out to family who lost home in fire

Update:

Sorry for the delay on how to contact the family. We wanted to make sure we had a good number and address for you.

You can reach the family at 902-9923 or drop off gifts at 2908 East 12th St, Austin, TX 78702.

Right now, I’m still struggling to return the 150 emails and phone calls I have received on this story. It’s going to take a while, but know that I’m not ignoring you!

Update:

The Sumpters now have a place to live. A local man contacted the Sumpters and offered to let the family stay in the man’s two story, three-bedroom house in Lago Vista, Leroy Sumpter said.

The man also lent them a Mazda. Furniture is being delivered to the house today, he said.

Scores of readers and television viewers are reaching out the the Sumpters, a family of nine that lost its home in a fire yesterday.

The Austin family, which lived in Northeast Austin, lost most of their belongings in the noon blaze. The fire was caused by a short in the water heater’s power supply, officials said. Chimere and Leroy Sumpter have six children — all younger than 10 — and a nephew living with them.

The family first started hearing from people wishing to help last night after news stations ran stories about the fire. Today, more than 100 people have e-mailed and called the Statesman looking to help.

One person touched by the family’s story has offered them a place to live in Lago Vista. This morning, Chimere and Leroy Sumpter — the parents — went out to see the home.

Meanwhile, the Austin Police Department’s Operation Blue Santa will be delivering food and gifts to the family today at 1:30 p.m.

Note: The Red Cross does not take donations for specific families.
