Dave Thomas lived in a small apartment on Anderson Lane during the heyday of Willie and Waylon and the Armadillo World Headquarters in 1972. Unfortunately, he was only a year old. He's returned to Austin a couple times since then, most recently arriving from San Angelo in early 2002. He pays the bills as a copy editor and designer, but secretly longs to be a world championship barbecue cook-off judge. He drives a '98 Chevy pickup named after a Billy Joe Shaver song and loves a San Antonio girl named Shannon.

A multiple-choice question:
When do I have to take the boy out of his pajamas to take him to the store?

A) Now. Right now.
B) When Shannon tells me to knock it off and dress the boy right.
C) When other people at H-E-B start making fun of us.
D) When the boy says “Dad! I have to get dressed!”

Remove the pajama's when you wanna be the sort of dad who worries about such nonsense. If Dave and tyke are laughing and bonding...then that's what counts.
Tell wifey you have a right to be a goofball now and then.

A. Now. He's almost a year old, ya know?
Once, when I was working nights at the newspaper, my husband took Kyle (he was probably 9 months old) by the pharmacy to pick up some medicine. It was about 30 minutes before the store closed and he figured he would just run through the drive-through. Well, they close the drive-through about 30 minutes before closing. So he had to bring Kyle into the store IN JUST A DIAPER. He was mortified (my husband, not the baby).

I'm 31, and occasionally I go to the store in my pajamas (still decent and fully clothed, of course). They haven't thrown me out yet!
