Production update: ‘Getting Back to Abnormal’

With all of the film production going on in Austin, it was inevitable that with our production update that appeared on June 24 we would miss at least one movie with Austin ties. Such was the case with “Getting Back to Abnormal,” a film co-written and co-directed by Paul Stekler, chairman of UT’s RTF Department. Stekler, who has a host of impressive directing (“George Wallace: Settin’ the Woods on Fire”) and producing credits (“Be Here to Love Me: A Film About Townes Van Zandt”) reached out to us with an update about his latest project. The information is included below in the same format used for our production update story, which can be found here.

Title: ‘Getting Back to Abnormal’
Writers-Directors: Louie Alvarez, Andy Kolker, Peter Odabashian, and Paul Stekler
Synopsis: “Documentary about how New Orleans, America’s most unique and functionally dysfunctional city, has recreated itself five years after Katrina, interweaving stories about politics, housing, the making of HBO’s Treme, and a host of characters, including James Carville, Brad Pitt, and David Simon,” Stekler said via email. “The first collaboration in a decade by the same film team that produced the four hour ‘Vote for Me: Politics in America,’ winner of Emmy, Peabody, and duPont-Columbia awards.”
Next Step: After a year and a half of filming, film is in post-production, scheduled for completion in early 2012. Would premier at SXSW, do the festival circuit, and then be broadcast nationally by PBS, either on POV or Independent Lens.
