Coen brothers wrap ‘True Grit’ in Austin

The Coen brothers’ updating of the John Wayne western “True Grit” wraps Thursday and Friday in downtown Austin, including at the Capitol. Expect some street closures, detailed below.

Most of the film was shot in Granger and Blanco, but the crew needs scenes set in Memphis, and it looks like the Austin Club and the East Wing of the Capitol will stand in for parts of the Tennessee city, according to Bob Hudgins at the Texas Film Commission.

The Coens have changed the original ending of the 1969 classic, Hudgins says. They’ll be throwing dirt on the streets for that old-timey look and, according to the Transportation Department, which is blocking off streets, “film crews will temporarily alter the appearance of these streets to resemble the early 1900s, including the removal of a modern light pole, pay station, and signs.”

The crew will use the East Wing of the Capitol to play the Memphis train station, Hudgins says. They will shoot after hours on Friday, the very last day of the production, which began in April. The remake stars Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin.

Here’s the official release from the Transportation Department:

Filming on E. Ninth St. to Affect Traffic Thursday, Friday

Road closures will take place between 5 a.m. Thursday, May 27 and 11 p.m. Friday, May 28 along East 9th Street between Congress Avenue and Brazos Street and along the alley just east of Congress between East 8th and 10th streets for a film production.

Austin Police Department officers will be on hand to help detour traffic and ease delays through the area. Alternate routes are suggested including eastbound along 7th Street and east and west along 11th Street.
