Who’s your hero?
— “Superman Returns” is swooping in on June 28. If you’d like to honor a hero in your own life, the Regal Gateway theater wants to help. Write the winning entry about why this person is a hero and you your honoree can win a VIP package to see the movie plus other prizes. For more information about the contest, call 343-5480. The theater will also have games and activities for kids and adults on the afternoon of July 1, the Saturday of the film’s opening weekend.
To continue your “Superman Returns” prep, A&E has a big ol’ special premiering June 12 called “Look, Up in the Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman.” It’s narrated by Kevin Spacey, who plays Lex Luthor in the new film, and features a ton of other celebrity interviews. Most of the subjects are exactly whom you’d expect, but then — great Caesar’s ghost! — there’s also Gene Simmons, a fan of the Man of Steel.
— John DeFore, who writes the Statesman’s DVD column and is a god among free-lancers, writes about bootleg DVDS on Slate. That scamp!
— Director Kat Candler and producer Stacy Schoolfield will present their film “Jumping Off Bridges” for free — as in free admission, free valet parking, free popcorn and snacks — Tuesday at St. Edward’s University. After the screening, there’ll be a panel discussion on the production, marketing and distribution of the film. Besides Candler and Schoolfield, the panel features Texas Film Commission Director Bob Hudgins and former director Tom Copeland. The screening is Jones Auditorium at Ragsdale Center. Doors at 6:30 p.m., screening at 7. There’s limited seating, so RSVP to ess@acad.stedwards.edu if you want to attend.
