Gasp! Corcoran defends Sanjaya
Michael Corcoran knows music.
He’s covered the local scene for the Austin American-Statesman for something like a zillion years.
So we were shocked — and appalled — when we learned he actually likes Sanjaya Malakar. Here’s what he had to say:
“My ears and eyes must be deceiving me; Sanjaya is not bad at all. From what I heard on Howard Stern and all the piling on in the office on Wednesday mornings, the kid was this year’s William Hung, a big joke that he wasn’t in on. But I called up a couple of his performances on YouTube and he sang on pitch, had a cool look and seemed to be having a blast. Huge careers have been built on less. Stop making this 17-year-old kid your scapegoat, you Sanjaya-hatas. I mean, aren’t you the people that gave us the indistinguishable Taylor Hicks? Without Sanjaya, this would be one of the most forgettable ‘Idol’ seasons. That’s why he’s still going — not Howard Stern.”
Alrighty then.
So, is Corcoran right? Are we being too hard on Sanjaya? Or is the criticism deserved? Now’s your chance to be heard …
Idol chatter …
- The folks at ABC are running scared.
They’ve moved “Notes From the Underbelly,” a new sitcom, to 9 p.m. Wednesdays after Fox announced earlier this week that it was expanding the “Idol” results show to a full hour. The change will keep the two out of direct competition.
Good call, guys.

I completely agree with Corcoran.
Sanjaya is pretty good and the judges and half the AI voters have been very unfair to him so to speak. There are very few people who can be so strong and perform at his level to stand the villification that has been made against him. I myself am a singer and I have been watching AI for sometime now and I should say I like this kid both as a singer as well as an entertainer. He has got the IT factor.
Go Sanjaya !!

Oh, c’mon! Sanjaya should have been voted off a LONG time ago. He’s a nice looking kid, but that’s where it starts and ends (although, he could stand to eat a few cheeseburgers to gain some weight). He does not have singing talent, period, dot. Only someone who is extremely tone deaf would think he sings well enough to remain in the competition. C’mon people from votefortheworst.com. We get the point you’re trying to make, but enough is enough! Let this poor lad go…PLEASE!

All these bloggers and talk show hosts follow the herd. They some how feel that to appreciate a singer who has been “marked” is some kind of loss to their credibility. Go Sanjaya !

Sanjaya is not that bad; he just is not as good as everybody else. Far better singers than him have been voted off. Personally, I think Haley is not bad at all and she gets critized week after week.

Sanjaya is not bad for a pop singer who will drift away as did David Cassidy and Donny Osmond, he could be a one time wonder. But please people there are two very talented and deserving people this year who should not be cancelled out Blake Lewis is breath of fresh air - he is an entertainer and someone we need in the music industry. Melinda Doolittle not that girl can sing and takes us back to Gladys Night. Lets stop wasting Sanjaya time and our time. The poor kid is going to get a rude awakening which is not fair to him. We do not need another Michael Jackson…

That precious kid, Sanjaya Malakar, is a joy to watch every week. I wish he would turn up the volume, but I do look forward to seeing him. (And Blake).
I am so sick of the boring girls who sing the old songs. I don’t care how talented they are, I don’t want to see or hear them any more.

I liked the way sanjaya sang besame mucho eventhough the words were not the ones I knew I thought his stage presence and even singing were spellbinding it’s not always whether your’e agood singer or not it’s how you sell the song
