Laura losing fans

A new poll says Laura Bush’s favorability rating has fallen sharply in recent years. Only good news for her is that another family member’s ratings have fallen even more.

“Laura Bush, once almost universally liked, has seen her favorability ratings slip along with her husband’s over the past three years,” the Pew Research Center reported. “Currently, a slim majority of Americans (54 percent) say they have a favorable impression of the first lady, down from 70 percent in August of 2004.”

During that same period, the number saying they have an unfavorable view has gone from 18 percent to 29 percent.

Mrs. Bush’s 16-point popularity drop is less than her husband’s 25-point drop since August 2004. The new numbers were compiled during a Dec. 19-30 poll of 1,430 adults.

The Pew survey did not say what it is that people don’t like about Mrs. Bush.

The first lady is not the only high-profile Washington woman falling out of favor.

In December 2006, 32 percent of respondents in a Pew poll had a favorable impression of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. It was down to 25 in the December 2007 poll, and her negatives went from 27 percent to 38 percent.
