Love and prenups
When love blooms, can the lawyers be far behind?
This release hit reporters’ e-mail boxes within hours of the White House announcement that Jenna Bush is engaged:
Matrimonial attorney offers tips to newly engaged Jenna Bush
Susan Moss, matrimonial lawyer at Chemtob Moss Forman & Talbert, LLP , is available to discuss Jenna Bush’s engagement and the next steps Jenna and her fiance should be taking now to protect their assets.
According to Moss, “A prenuptial agreement is the wedding gift that keeps on giving: Now that Miss Bush is engaged, the real work will now begin - negotiating and drafting her prenuptial agreement. Apart from President Bush’s presidential salary, rumor abound that the Bush’s have millions upon millions invested for all members of the family. These family assets do need to be protected and a prenuptial agreement is just the vehicle that will be called upon. Although the newlyweds have exchanged promises of lifelong love, now they will exchange discovery of all their assets and income. The romance will continue as they fall in love with their new attorneys - family law attorneys who will review all documents and carve out the parties’ deal.”

White House wedding?
Here’s the official announcement from Sally McDonough, press secretary to Laura Bush:
“President and Mrs. George W. Bush are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jenna Bush, to Mr. Henry Hager, son of the Honorable and Mrs. John H. Hager of Richmond, Virginia. Miss Bush and Mr. Hager became engaged Wednesday, August 15, 2007. No wedding date has been set.”
Here’s what else we know based on a conversation this spring with a, shall we say, well-placed source who spoke privately about the above matter:
Back then, a family marriage was expected but a White House wedding was not. Things can always change - and may already have - but the well-placed source said there would not be a White House wedding before the Bushes leave town.
That could mean:
A. A wedding someplace else (Kennebunkport can be romantic. Crawford, not so much) B. There will not be a wedding prior to Jan. 20, 2009.
Footnote: On April 11, 1994, when then-gubernatorial candidate and Texas Rangers managing general partner George W. Bush served as tour guide on opening day at the team’s new stadium, he pointed to a long stairway at the end of a concourse and talked about how one of his daughters would one day come down it on her wedding day.
Sure, dad.
They’re scientists, not mathematicians
It’s early, but the correction of the day so far belongs to the Union of Concerned Scientists, which issued a missive this morning to update a news release about the organization’s support of a proposed federal fuel economy standard.
“Due to an editing error, the previous media alert said the Hill-Terry bill would save 180 barrels of oil in 2020. The actual figure is 180 million barrels of oil in 2020,” said the update.
What’s a few million barrels among friends?
