Buck, Dolph and Rachel
Q. What do country music great Buck Owens, former Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe and environmentalist author Rachel Carson have in common?
A. All three went postal on Thursday.
President Bush on Thursday signed into law the legislation designating the Buck Owens Post Office in Bakersfield, Calif.; the Rachel Carson Post Office Building in Springdale, Penn.; and the Dolph Briscoe Jr. Post Office Building” in Uvalde, Texas.
Owens, who died in 2006, was a Texas native who moved to Bakersfield in 1951 before he began a long, successful country music career.
Carson, a Springdale native, died in 1964 two years after publication of her landmark work - “Silent Spring” - that raised awareness of the hazards of pesticide misuse.
Briscoe is a native of the South Texas city of Uvalde and served as Texas governor from 1973 through 1979.
