Thompson Wants to Bypass Old Media
Fred Thompson, the former Senator-turned-actor, says he would have to run an unconventional campaign if he decides to make a late entrance into the Republican presidential contest.
He’s testing that tactic by going around Washington’s news media to reach the public directly. The star of TV’s “Law & Order” has begun churning out radio commentaries, blogging his views online and writing columns for conservative Websites.
Significantly, he gave one of his few on-camera interviews to the upstart online site Breitbart.tv. If he were to win the ‘08 election, Thompson said, it would be “in large part” because of such new ways to communicate.

Oddly, Thompson’s name appeared on an ABC news online poll following the republican debates, even though he was not there, and has not announced. Even more oddly, the ABC news poll omitted Ron Paul from the survey. Did ABC watch the debate at all? How could they leave out the only candidate that wasn’t an obviously transparent Reagan Wannabe doing the back-stroke to get away from W?
After receiving thousands of emails, ABC righted their blunder and not too surprisingly, Ron Paul got an order of magnitude more votes than others. Online polls at other major media sites also show Ron Paul with far more approval than their standard coverage would indicate.
There’s more people out there supporting Ron Paul than the two party duopoly or the popular media would like to recognize.
Personally, I’ve never considered the more time consuming activities in support of a particular candidate or party. But this is different. I’ve purchased 1000 libertarian door hangers and printed an equal number of Ron Paul flyers. I’m looking forward to meeting quite a few of my neighbors in the next few weeks.
From what you read here at The Statesman and elsewhere you might feel comfortable in dismissing Ron Paul as a second tier oddball. But if you take a look at myspace, youtube, and other online sources, you’ll find a grass roots campaign in the making.
