24 Months to Go

Small steps by potential 2008 GOP presidential candidates are drawing full-blast reactions from the Democratic National Committee.

DNC spokeswoman Karen Finney rapped ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who has formed a presidential exploratory committee, for being, well, too Democratic.

“It’s unclear whether or not Rudy Giuliani will be able to just explain away the fact that he’s consistently taken positions that are completely opposite to the conservative Republican base on issues they hold near and dear,” Finney says. “Throughout his career Giuliani has tried to paint himself as a moderate, but now that he’s vying for his party’s nomination will he undergo an extreme makeover in an attempt to cozy up to the far right?”

The Dems noted that Giuliani is on the record in favor of abortion rights and gay rights, positions not likely to endear him to some Repubs.

And as Arizona Sen. John McCain prepares to set up his presidential exploratory committee, the DNC has these thoughts::

“Once again we ask, which John McCain will show up to run for president? While he claims to be steadfast, the facts tell a different story. From his pandering to the far right wing of his party in preparation for a presidential campaign, Sen. McCain has shown his true colors as a political opportunist who supports the Bush administration’s failed policy in Iraq and changed his mind on tax cuts, a women’s right to make her own decisions about health care and campaign finance reform.”
