Marine One Grounded
President Bush’s Wednesday trip to Alabama was delayed when Marine One, the helicopter that usually takes him from the White House South Lawn to Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base, was grounded by radio problems.
“We had a helicopter issue. Everybody is safe,” Bush said after he climbed out of the aircraft.
Bush and his top aides had climbed in and were on board as the rotors cranked up for take off. After a minute or so, it became obvious something was wrong. The engines were cut and Bush climbed out and gave a hands-up what-happened motion as he looked at the invited guests on hand for the take-off.
Bush then worked the crowd, shaking hands and posing for photos, as a motorcade was arranged for the drive to Andrews.
