Is CNN’s political team the best on television?
Germany’s Der Spiegel newspaper enjoyed an “exclusive” behind-the-scenes look at the new high-tech election studio built by the Atlanta-based network.
Reporter Marc Pitzke said that, every few minutes, CNN hyped its election staff as “the best political team on television” — which recently prompted rival anchor Katie Couric from CBS News [ed: corrected] to promote her crew as “the best political team in the galaxy.” However, according to Pitzke, “CNN’s analysts aren’t much different from their competitors at Fox News and MSNBC.”
He said: “They’re a carefully balanced selection of talking heads, who have found a new, profitable career in this endless election campaign. There’s a liberal, there’s a conservative, there’s an African-American, there’s a Latina. Like sports commentators, they dress up with words what can be plainly seen on the screen anyway.”
According to Pitzke, CNN likes to guard its Election Center like a company secret, but it granted Der Spiegel exclusive behind-the-scenes access for a night following the recent Mississippi primary. The center is a hub where raw data and numbers are stirred into a cocktail of information for millions of viewers worldwide.
“Just before the show starts, the mood is jovial, almost like in a bar. The analysts are joking around; they’re seated at two high plexiglass benches behind each other, like roosting chicken,” Pitzke said. “Soledad O’Brien giggles as she’s being wired and powdered. Hidden behind a wall someone has placed thermos jugs and a half-empty can of soda.”
The “Magic Wall,” also called “Big Board,” is CNN’s most recent attempt to bring classic journalism into the high-tech era — and to lure the Google generation to its programs. John King, who learned his trade as an old-school reporter at the Associated Press, was skeptical at first. “But as I became more familiar with it, I realized that the things it’s capable of are simply remarkable,” he told “Der Spiegel.”
All in all, Pitzke was impressed with a wall that can do almost anything with plain voting results. “It visualizes them as virtual maps, bundles them, explains them, throws them into the future, adds information from Web sites like Google and even displays satellite photos. It can count delegates and superdelegates, add popular votes and project winners and losers,” he gushed.

By nature, the media in a capitalistic society holds the buck more sacred than the unspun fact. While FOX lazily tips its hand, CNN is still a great example. Conflict sells, just like in literary FICTION. Close races have more conflict. Why on earth would the media in this country want to expose the pending presidential election lnadslide for what it will be when to do so would cut into its ratings? Wolf Blitzers performances at the debates typifies this - stir up trouble when there is none. And Lou Dobbs…Bill O’reilly lite, or what? A good start to cleaning up CNN would be to ship that nazi out.
It ain’t about political coverage - it’s about a show, about creating the best possible show so that people will tune in.

If CNN had the best political team someone would ask the tough questions that need to answered by the Democratic candidates. I’ve yet to hear anyone ask Obama about his Muslim upbringing (unlike the way Romney was grilled about his faith) or his 20 year relationship with Rev. Wright. Neither has Hillary been grilled about the numerous scandals she has been involved in over the years.
The public needs to have the tough questions asked on BOTH sides of the political spectrum. Otherwise, CNN’s well documented bias against the Republican Party diminishes anything they can transmit over the airwaves.

If you were born a died in the wool liberal, well yes, CNN is the best in political coverage! However, if you have ever been to another country, served this one, or read much, then the answer is: NO! CNN is far from the best! About as far from it as a network can be. There is rampant distortion of news, prejudiced thinking about most any news, and the haughty atmosphere that they are ALWAYS right, and shan’t be questioned about it! Why who do you think you are? We’re CNN!

Those ragging CNN I hope are equally unhappy with Fox News otherwise you can consider yourself biased.
Fair and Balanced. HA!
CNN is probably the most middle of the road. Fox is far right, MSNBC leans left.
Fox is the ultimate in sensationalism…regularly scheduled shows such as “Special report” “News Alert”. All terms that should be reserved for SERIOUS events, not a regularly scheduled show.

They are terrible. Their anti-military agenda started when they showed a dead U.S. soldier being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu (much to the angst of the soldier’s wife who watched in horror while at home in Fayetteville N.C.). Then CNN under “Rikki” Kaplan came up with “Operation Tailwind.” Another whopper of a CNN lie that said U.S. Special Operation forces used Nerve Gas (read a weapon of mass destruction) in Laos and also targeted american defectors. CNN fired the wrong people and ended up paying out of court settlements to the fired employees (Jack Smith and April Olver). “Rikki” Kaplan hid like a dog during a thunderstorm and could not be found during the outcry. Then Anderson Cooper shows the “CNN snuff film” of a U.S. soldier getting shot by a muslim sniper in Iraq.
The best in Politics? How about the best in their own left wing agendas. They suck and so does Fox news… is there anything out there unbiased?.

CNN stand for: Clinton News Network or Consistantly Negative News. If I have a happy moment I can always turn them on to hear how the sky is falling and how the Republicans caused it to happen. CNN is literally the worst station in the world when it comes to reporting on the accomplishments that occur every day in these great States of America. There is no doubt a great deal of the world gets their information regarding the USA from CNN. No wonder they have a negative idea of my country.

CNN has failed in two areas. Their polling has been the worst of any network. And they cover the southern primaries but have no one who understands our areas. I think MSNBC has blown them away and I actually am back to warching Fox some because (although they are truly biased) they aren’t as afraid to be non-politically correct. All in all I wish everyone would give us some fresh faces and a little advanced knowledge rather than analysing the obvious. I’ll givee CNN a c-; FOX a c+; and MSNBC a B. QUESTION…….WHY DO POOR WHITES VOTE REPUBLICAN? Do they show their voter registration card & get a discount at the gas station? Do the mortgage meltdown not affect them. Do their union jobs with good health insurance not leave the country? Would you rather pay $1.30 for gas & have a cheating president or pay $4 and have the War?

WHY DO POOR WHITES VOTE REPUBLICAN? I have ask the question many times of my white friends. If your income is $50,000 or less and you are not investing in bonds, stocks, REITs, or mutual funds you should not vote Republican. I vote Republican because in the last eight years of the Bush gang my income from investments in the above have increased 75% and my income is above $50,000. I have not worked a full-time position in 4 years and I pay my mortgage and taxes. PS. I am 58 with healthcare and I will not vote Republican in 2008, it is time for a change.

CNN harbors far too much of a conservative bias for me. Can you imagine any other news network completely abdicating their responsibility of objectivity and critical thinking in the run up to the Iraq War? CNN simply took everything the administration said as gospel, despite the fact that it could readily be refuted at the time. “We’ll be greeted as liberators”, “Iraq can finance it’s own reconstruction.”, “The war will be over in weeks, not months”, “Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.”, “Saddam has a connection to Al Quaeda.”, “Major combat operations in Iraq have ended.”, all of these statements were reported as fact by CNN from the moment they were made. All other media outlets were far more objective than CNN, and did not shamelessly parrot GOP talking points throughout Bush’s first term. For instance… wait… I’m sure an example will come to me…

Furthermore: I vote “YES” for the $1.30 gas; I vote “NO” for a cheating president (who disgraced this great Republic); I vote “NO” for $4.00 gas and would push the button on the “Wild Fire” program to finish the Middle East, oops, I mean finish the war.

CNN is very biased, but most news organs are not days. Another problem is that they do not bring in enough outside experts to educate the public in an unbiased way, for example they need more college profs and career military experts. I guess CNN is no worse that the national papers, but Journalism is not as professional as it once was.

I agree with Charles. CNN is extremely biased and it is sickening. The conservatives have nicknamed CNN, the “Clinton News Network” for a good reason, and it clearly shows. In fact, CNN’s coverage of the presidential campaign is so unbalanced, I refuse to watch, opting instead to watch MSNBC. Wolfe Blitzer needs to go and Campbell Brown does not have enough knowledge to host her own show. She does not know how to ask a complex and difficult question, and just appears to be clueless.
The best thing that CNN has going is Tony Harris weekday mornings and Gerri Willis on Saturday mornings.

If Clinton affected your personal lifestyle over $4 for gas, you must work from home. Clinton probably had more of a social life with his intern than you would ever have. Why don’t you ask your kids what affected them more. The great thing about your kids is they are waking up? They are no longer accepting your brain dead decisions on why they should punch a clock at work & still vote Republican.
You talk about Clinton embarrassing the U.S. Who has damaged us more overseas? Bush used our soldiers as toys to go over there and try to steal oil.

CNN’s claim of having “the best political team” has as much worth as all of these parents who think that their kids are perfect, smart, talented angels, or a business where everyone is an “executive vice-president” of something. I noticed that this blog became a CNN vs. Fox news competition. The fact of the matter is, Fox is extreme RIGHT and MSNBC is now the extreme LEFT. CNN was the extreme LEFT and has tried to come more to the middle. I am not sure it is there yet but I would say that out of the three, it is the least biased…I would bet my right arm that most of the people SCREAMING FOX are devout republicans and would never vote anything else regardless of the issues. Those screaming CNN are probably devout Democrats. We tend to believe what we want and will never change our views based on a blog. I am just hoping all the bloggers get real with themselves and be honest. You watch the news that tells you what you want to hear. So, REPUBLICANS/RADICALS will continue to watch FOX with big headed Hannity and DEMOCRATS/RADICALS will switch back and forth between MSNBC and CNN.
As someone who sees through it all, I prefer CNN because they are more mainstream. Fox is very transparent and only promotes the Radical Right Wing agenda. I guess I have picked the lesser of two evils. BUT HEY, WHEN A NEWS PRODUCTION SUPPORTS BUSH AND HIS EVIL VP (DARK VADAR), HOW COULD YOU NOT TURN THE CHANNEL…

CNN this year has been head and shoulders above any other network in its election coverage. The three major networks don’t even count anymore because—with the exception of Super Tuesday—they have devoted almost none of their primetime lineup to coverage even of election returns. CBS has good supporting people but Katie Couric is an absolute joke. She can’t even carry Walter Cronkite’s or Dan Rather’s briefcase. Fox has really disappointed in this election season. CNN has a diverse analysis panel that is almost evenly balanced between Democrats and Republicans and liberal and conservative and that offers very indepth coverage. It’s not even a contest as to who is the best.

CNN is just Faux News light for it’s clearly slanted pro-Rethuglicon coverage. A bunch of hyperbole interlaced with irrelevant facts backed up with manufactured statistics. And don’t forget the dirt and smear they keep passing around and around and around ad nauseam. Unfortunately, it’s what passes for new coverage today.
Of course, CNN isn’t all to blame. The Rethugliconization of broadcast news has been taking place since Ronnie was elected. The neocons have done an excellent job of labeling any news company attempt to exposes their lies as a card-carrying member of the ‘liberal media.’ May as well call them commies or child molesters.
When you vote Rethuglicon, you vote against your own best interests. And the election coverage is living proof.
