Very nice, Elizabeth, for taking pen in hand and putting your thoughts together. It’s good to have something to believe in as a young person so we can all turn out less cynical and more giving than people like Dick Cheney and George W Bush.
I just want you to take some time and find out how many more Americans have been incarcerated in the course of the last 25 years in our country, and find out why our jails are continued to be filled with younger people. As the percentage of more females, more educated and more middle class people continue to go up, we citizens have to look closely at how we have become a police state. Your generation is more and more at risk, and ours has failed at safeguarding your welfare. I am saddened to have to say this to you this July 4th, but saying truth to power IS an American tradition.
I have to agree with Floridacargocat.
It was not like you were taken away for a week without a reason. The outbreak of this swine flue is very serious and I think we can learn something from the way that China is handling things.
Considering that China has not had any confirmed deaths and the USA has had 127 deaths which incidentally is the largest number of reported deaths world wide.
I think that they are onto something here.

A very nice essay. But I fail to see what liberty, freedom and land of opportunity have to do with the preventive measures a country (wherever it may be). Maybe The Palmbeach Post should look into a scenario of quarantine measures in Palm Beach County and report about it and then compare this with the experiences of these three travelers. It might be a lecture in raising the awareness of emergency regulations for the wellbeing of the greater public.
By the way, is the Florida Governor empowered to enact and enforce these regulations or is it only the Federal Government? On the basis of which statutes?
