Excuse me, I was born in the great state of Louisiana. Regardless of where my ancestors were from I AM A 100% NATIVE AMERICAN! I bet most of those on this board are too.

Take a look at your tax bill — the :percentage used to assess your ad valorum tax / county tax has not actually gon increased” — the increases have been on the assessments related to home sales. My bill has actually gone down. In fact, my overall tax bill has gone down.

Its sad to say there has been poor planning for PBC’s growth and the countries in general; for its anticipated needs in response to growth and required maintenances of essential things such as restrengthening the Lake O dike, school programs, weather satellites… Instead tax money is pondered for frills like ‘new’ buildings and other superficial projects to ‘bring’ money to the area. Start letting some rich investors finance the frilly new buildings and build the Marlins Stadium. Let tax money protect and strengthen our way of living; police, fireman, teachers, community needs. Maybe some people who have intelligence and integrity need to replace who’s running the show, county-wide and throughout the entire USA Seems like no one is watching the homefront, Katrina and 911 were evidence, both man-made and natural disasters. Being prepared for the worse. Concerns about erosion on the beaches to protect private expensive property in an evacuation zone vs regards for the loss of life Lake O fills and the dike breaks show how PBC legislators have priorities skewed to the $$ over regard for human life once again!

If the US gov. treats ‘enemy combatants’ that break laws overseas without ANY due process, then these ‘illegal enemy combatants’ that commit violent crimes on our soil shall be treated as, if not more, harshly than the guys in Gitmo. Illegal aliens that are here commiting violent crimes, for purpose of definition, are indeed the taxpayers’ enemies and are also combating our way of life and laws. No matter where they snuck from, these people don’t come here with intentions of contributing to the American way of life, otherwise, they’d be waiting in line for their green cards-the LEGAL WAY, just like my parents did. They drain our system along with the crooked officials, of course!

If the taxes have gone up so much the last several years. And with all the home sales the last five years they went up a lot. Then the cities shouild have a huge surplus built up! Oh wait, they spend it all like it was their money!

I am so tired of the Mexican bashing. I want to know everyone who signed on here today who is 100% pure Native American…no one! So you are all “immigrants” too - but it was OK for your people to come here - you know, all those Irish Micks and Italian Waps. Did you know that old Ben Franklin wrote many articles on how the German immigrants would ruin “English” America? And how many Germans NEVER learned English? All you “Americans” have never been to another country - did you know that Switzerland has four languages (Italian, German, French and Romansh) and the whole country runs 10 times better than America. Yes, America will look like Mexico in 20 years - meaning we will only have poor people and the ultra rich as the Republicans have gutted the middle class. I am the child of immigrant parents and proud of it. Why should my parents been denied the chance to be Americans - they were not college educated and worked in basic jobs just like the Mexicans - but they were not BROWN, maybe thats the problem you all have, they were EUROPEAN so they are OK - read your history!!!!

with all the diseases and crime due to the influx of undocumented illegals,we need alot of money allocated to the police agencies,as well as emergency medical personal.the illegals don’t pay taxes, this is why our tax base is so high.they may be little in stature buy they are big when it comes to breaking laws.keep in mind they have huge families.

Dear former illegal, while you missed the point its obvious you are buying into the whole multicultral BS that is brain washed into you by the liberals. You are correct…40 million new democrats to vote. Can’t wait to see how that will turn out. BTW no one in wellington has tarilers to rent to multiple families so I guess we they won’t see you there. I am sure all the “people” you want to see move to North Dakota have paid more in taxes, are more educated, and have contributed more than you and the other people that broke in to this country. This dicussion is about taxes and services…which I am sure you pay non but expect a heck of alot of services, like free lunch, welfare, free english classes in school, fire, police, etc. Can’t wait until you guys really come out ofthe shadows and start draining the state and Federal government. We wil be bankrupt just like mexico and everyother country south of the border. Eventually you will have florida to yourself and you line the street corners with donkeys painted like zebras and old ladys selling chiclettes just like Tijuana!

If an illegal can afford a house in Wellington than he has probably worked very hard to achieve the “American dream” and should be welcomed. I know that the illegals you’re talking about are the hispanic immigrants, get used to them they aint going no where! As a matter of fact, the politicians are courting them more each day bacause, unlike other minorities, they vote, and more of them are becoming citizens daily. Either way, mbrace it or move to North Dakota. If you do, you wont be missed by those of us who cherish the racial makeup of South Florida. SPEAK SPANISH THIS IS FLORIDA!!!!

Just found a tenant for my rental property. Things are a bit different now. 2004: Rented for $1300/mo. with ~$2100 insurance, and ~$2500 taxes. $145K mortgage. 2007: Rented for $1050/mo. with ~$3000 insurance, and ~$5800 taxes. It’s no wonder why we lead the state in foreclosures. ABSOLUTELY ridiculous how things can change so fast. We’ll be moving out of FL soon. I’ll miss the warm water and trips to the Keys, but that’s about it. Thanks for screwing up a great state. I look forward to spending my FL retirement on property in the Carolinas.

“Wellington will look like Iraq ” …actually you have that wrong. It will look like mexico. Because congress is getting ready to flood the country with 20 Million mexicans. they will ruin the place so bad even the jihadist won’t want to blow it up. All this noise about cutting services like police and how bad the schools are is a bunch of crap. The schools here are great with good teachers and I see the police doing a fine job. If you don’t like go find your liberal utopia where all the wealth is redistrubuted and everyone drive solar cars and hangs out in the dog parks. Taxes need to be cut and crime and schooling can still improve if all of our laws were enforce and criminal were handed very strick penalties and the rotten kids and illegals were kicked out of schools. As long as the illegals and thugs keeping getting off scot free is not matter how much money you spend on something. Get tough on crime, criminals, and illegals. You don’t need alot of money to deport illegals and put criminal in the gas chamber.

To John,

My sister is a teacher and though I have a lot of respect for them, they are not on the same level as public safety. For the most part, education sucks here so are they really doing their jobs. On the other hand, my brother is a Deputy and he has his master’s degree and had been shot at twice and stabbed once. Not to mention teachers have all summer off, pubic safety doesn’t.

To aaa,

You have to the biggest moron on here. PBCFR operates at a loss for some the area the provide fire protection to. If you think that all fire departments can budget and they can’t, Palm Beach Gardens fire is broke there was an article about that, Lake Worth is looking to merge with county b/c they are broke, Delray Beach has had major budget problems, and shall I continue. Give it up and get your facts straight before you post nonsense BS! The biggest way to save tax dollars is merge all public safety into one police and one fire. But that will never happen because of the corrupt city and county commissioners who could care less about the people they serve. It has been proven to be more cost effective and more valuable.

In reference to John’s comment your right we chose to become cops or firemen. Someone has to do it,someone with courage and who is willing to put their lives on the line and help others for 40k a yr. Nothing against teachers but I dont see them running into a burning bldg or deals with gang members who carry ak-47’s who don’t care if your a cop.But that right John you don’t see it that way while you work behind your cozy desk at work or when your at home and will dial 911 because you heard a noise in your yard. Better yet next time you need to call the police or fire dept do me a favor and handle it yourself.

The bottom line is home prices (and therefore taxes) have increased exponentially over the last 10 years, unlike most of our salaries. Additionally, the number of people moving into the area also have grown exponentially over the last 10 years and of course these people pay sales taxes, which by the way happen to be higher in PBC than in other counties. All of this means more and more revenues for the local governments. The more money they have, the more money they’ll spend. This is how it works. I have two kids of school age, and both schools (elementary and middle) have been knocked down and replaced with brand new schools even though the old ones seemed to be in average working condition. This seems to have happened everywhere I’ve looked in the last four years and is just an example of unnecessary spending. Government agencies replace old, perfectly good furniture and equipment simply because of appearence. Things are out of control, government has gotten too fat. Something has to be done.

By John

June 16, 2007 11:25 AM | Link to this

I have a plan; put PBSO on the same exact pay and retirement plan as PBC teachers. All teachers have college degrees and a good portion have Masters. Most deputies have neither. Don’t tell me teachers are less important than cops. Furthermore, please don’t cry “we put our life on the line every day”. First you chose your job and second we have soldiers at war being shot at everyday and they make 1/2 of PBSO. We would save millions.

By Disappointed

June 16, 2007 11:25 AM | Link to this

I am very disappointed our commissioners have not cut anything from their own budgets, such as the 8plus million in discressionary funding they have, their own assistants, etc. They continue to want to cut public safety services, the very last thing they should ever touch. Shows the corrupt is still running rampant with them. Time for a true change.

By Maggi

June 16, 2007 10:56 AM | Link to this

I think a lot of fat will be trimmed from programs in PBC. However if everyone in the state shared the burden of funding these projects we could continue on. If we had a state income tax then it could off set the inflated property taxes and Florida would end up with more first time homeowners. The average age in this state isn’t getting any younger and if we intend on attracting younger people we need to make it affordable.

By lavendar

June 16, 2007 10:47 AM | Link to this

I have owned my home for 6 years and yes, am “trapped” in my home because the taxes on a new purchase would not be affordable. HOWEVER you get what you pay for - taxes pay for fire rescue, police, schools and so much more.

I have heard over and over about not cutting our services —sheriff and fire rescue PLEASE DO NOT forget about the wonderful services that are why I live in Martin County. Martin County provides wonderful services that make this community one of the best places to live — CLEAN parks, youth programs, CLEAN boat ramps, CLEAN beaches with lifeguards, libraries that provides one of the best values for your dollar PLUS privately funded programs not paid for by County taxes (like Fushu Daiko last night at Blake).

I have also read that the second homeowners and seasonal/snowbirds are not happy w/ the high taxes - well they are lucky they can afford to be in that situation. I can’t even dream of owing a second or vacation home.

My bottom line is a little relief is ok, but crippling the County so I do not have story programs for my children to attend, libraries open for me to enjoy, clean and available parks to take my 3 kids to play — what would be here for me? Well, I know if I was in need of police, EMS or fire rescue I’d be safe.

A community is so much more then just that.

It will be a million times worse and don’t think for a second that the punk criminals don’t know this. Fire and police don’t get paid enough as it is. We need MORE not less! I’d be more than happy to pay state income tax than cut my police and fire!!!! There must be a better way. Thank you to all the police and fire personnel!!!! West Palm Beach has awesome parks but too many of them are under utilized, the only people that use them with regularity are the Guatemalans to play soccer. I think this happens because the white people are fat and lazy or cant stand the hot weather. South Olive has a nice basketball gym but its only open a few hours per week to play basketball. Bottom line, too many expensive parks that arent used. The county should just open up the gyms and fields at all the public schools after school hours instead of having a bunch of underitulized parks on every street corner.

The commissioners are already SAYING they will VOTE for an increase to save the police and fire.

The people want CUTS. Re negotiate contracts and benefits. Cut the commissioners’ salary.

People have LEFT the county therefore, not as much services are needed.

No need for new schools, as much fire and police personnel. Get those people from behind the desk on the street. Get rid of the PR people.

If the people do NOT see results from this “cutback” there will be politicians voted OUT of office. (But I must remember, Frankel…she was re-elected…only 10% of the WPB residents voted).

The public is LAZY so just vote to continue EVERYTHING and continue to tax us out of our house and homes.

As currently planned, that means almost $27 million in county capital projects will be eliminated, $800,000 in cultural council funds won’t be budgeted, and there will be a combination of 67 layoffs and unfilled vacancies.

And it still paves the way for a showdown with Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw: Weisman’s budget reflected $15 million less than what Bradshaw requested.

I find this EXTREMELY disingenuous by the county as they are sitting on 1.3 BILLION dollars.

I don’t have a problem with “rank and file” police officers and firefighters, BUT:

A. I can’t accept bloated bureaucracies in the front office of any government agency, “contract” for help.

B. Tight the noose on retirement costs by having professional negotiators work out labor agreements with unions rather than “wimps” who just throw away the public’s $$$.

C. Restrict and limit “disability” retirements to only legitimate “in the line of duty” incidents and investigate thoroughly all claims of on the job accidents. Fire those employees that fabricate so as to get time off.

D. Limit use of Sick Leave and therefore reduce replacement overtime.

That’s how costs could be contained without reducing the number of critical employees patrolling the streets or fighting fires.

My .02 worth.

It wont hurt the fire-rescue services they have alot of people already. They have alot of money in surplus. They collect on your taxes, bill your insurance company and bill you. Plus they get donations of $10,000 plus. Someone needs to look at how they spend there $$ money. How is it other fire departments can budget there money and PBCFR cant. They spend too much of our hard earned money. You don’t need a Fire Truck when you injured. You need a ambulance. Fire trucks are for Fires not when your hurt. oh those silly cops just sittin around doing nothing..wasting the tax dollars right? well unfortunately life isnt like the ‘minority report’ movie, where crime can be predicted you idiots! its called patrolling and deterring crime! cut the cops off and we’ll see whos the first one to call and whine when they get jacked by some punk that steals their ‘louis vuitton’ purses and BMW’s! stop your whinin’. how about the cities start cutting ‘beautification’ programs and maybe stop building retarded dog parks!they’re DOGS wasting your money people!!!! cities budgets are out of control with wasting millions on planting new palm trees and new pavers for thier immaculately maintained parks. Theres an army of city landscapers that are paid very well to simply cut the grass!!!! so choose people and make wise choices with cutting back the budgets! ask yourself if you want to feel safe strolling down the street or do you just care if the bricks in the roadway look nice!

No - not if they get rid of the waste in management, overhead, etc. Don’t cut the rank and file (firefighters, police on the street). Keep the people doing the work. Get rid of some of the fat cats earning the big paychecks.

The money that will be saved is necessary. It is becoming unaffordable for people to live in Palm Beach County at the wage levels these jobs here pay. We desperately need this tax cut and more.

Next, our legislators need to look at the insurance companies and gas companies.
