Gov. Crist and the Sheriff’s are on the same page. They KNOW that all this talk about laying off Police and Fire is just political spin. DO YOU ALL KNOW THAT BOB WEISMAN MAKES OVER $200.000/YEAR PLUS BENIFITS…NO MATTER HOW GOOD HE MAY BE TO SOME, HE SURE DONT DESIRVE THAT KIND OF MONEY….LOOK AT THE DEPARTMENT HE STARTED WITH… WATER UTILITIES….TALK ABOUT FAT, LOOK AT ALL THE ENGINEERS THIS DEPARTMENT HAS, AND WHAT THERE BASE PAY IS….THE KILLER PART IS WITH ALL THESE INHOUSE ENGINEERS, AND THEY STILL CONTRACT OUT TO MANY ENGINEERING FIRMS????THIS ALL NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO….THE WORD THAT IS OUT IS WATER UTILITIES, AND AIRPORT EMPLOYEES JOBS ARE SECURE BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONLY MONEY MAKING DEPARTMENTS FOR THE COUNTY…SO MAYBE THE FIRE FIGHTERS AND POLICE NEED TO GET JOBS WITH PALM BEACH COUNTY WATER UTILITIES AND KEEP THERE JOBS…
OK, 1/3 more police on the streets since after 9/11/01. That’s over 30% people! What are they doing most the time, talking on their cell phones (most likely not on official business), eating at restaurants (getting sympathy discounts), talking with their buddies (clumping with other police, when it is possibly the worst public safety strategy since it reduces the law enforcement surface area spread and places them in most danger-one attack may claim numerous officers at once!), and whistling at girls (maybe not that, but they might as well be).
Listen, I honor my LE officers, but when they’re acting like they’re above the average citizen, that’s wrong! They (and their families) have good pay, great insurances, pensions, education opportunities, often overtime, often get-out-of-jail free cards (see story of Jupiter police letting another cop drive away after being DUI)…Come on! They have overall stupendous careers. This is not the cops of yesteryear, where they had to sweat, walk the beat, wrestle, fight, billy club people in a night’s work. These guys sit in their cruisers and ticket you mercilessly for going 8MPH over, when they should be helping INS deport illegals, potential al-qeada cells, drug dealers (Scott Stapp had garbage bag full of pot and briefcase of coka and they release him the next day!). There’s enough of them out there (currently), they just need to be doing what’s in the BEST interest to the public.
Every public servant out there should be proud and thankful to have a job serving the people and not take it for granted!

JoeC: It’s abominable how the government is treating our soldiers in Iraq and after (Walter Reed) not to mention AFTER lying to all about why we invaded Iraq in the first place.
You made a GREAT point about the waste .
THE REST OF YOU: PLEASE DON’T DRINK THE ‘FEAR TACTIC’ KOOLAID!
They PAID for this advice - how to frighten people into accepting the tax burden as is.
BALONEY. Give me a highlighter and a few hours - I’ll show you where to cut! and it does NOT have to affect basic services!
Airline baggage employees? The pilots gave up part of their pensions and a reduction in pay to keep the airlines afloat.
Maybe senior police and fire personnel will reduce their salaries and bennies so that less senior personnel will be able to stay employed.
Let the following reduce their salaries: county commissioners, school board members, school board superintendent, PBC administrator, PBC convention center director, PBC commission lawyers, PBC judges (retire with FULL salary) WPB commissioners, WPB mayor, etc.
Hey, willing to cut those lawyers, judges and commissioners before the police and fire.
I’ve said it before…you have to watch Crist and his double talk. First he says not one firefighter will lose his job, not one. Then he says if they do he will campaign to make the politician who put them out of a job will not get reelected. Sounds like he signaling he knows counties and cities will have to eliminate jobs to get to the cuts the State is mandating. Believe me all things average joes remark on in saving $$ (drive home cars, cutting benefits) this is all chump change. You can’t get to the millions needed to be reduced unless you layoff personnel (that is the biggest cost to budgets). Oh, in case you can not connect the dots…no personnel no services! You will get what you may not want if you let the State dictate taxes (think services).
ORION, I was in the Marine Corps. We run into combat fields with terrorists. Take our people with hand to hand combat. You dont see the marine corps paying for our vehicles to get back and forth to work. Hell they didnt even want to pay for Flack Jackets for our boys in Iraq.
You know why the cops dont want us to take away their right to take home cop cars? because they get HUGE DISCOUNTS when they leave that cop car parket overnight sitting in a HOA Community. Dont even get me started on the Wives or Husbands of Cops that I know that drive those cars around late at night when they need something from the store. They shouldnt even be driving those cars!
I do have some cop friends and they are GOOD People but its time to trim the fat.
I think this town has more cop cars than houses now. I see 15 cop cars or undercovers on my drive home everyday. its literally like a 10 minute drive..
According to a newspaper article Bradshaw is sueing a company from which he purchased a $100,000 driving simulator. He is sueing because the program caused nauseaness and disorientation.
Yes, times are tough for everyone. Tax do need cuts, but not police budgets. Those same off-duty deputies you see out there do stop and assist motorist, and respond to life threatining calls even when they are off duty. I’m sure that if your family was sitting inside McDonalds and one of the many outstanding PBcounty citizen “criminals” robbed the place and had a gun to your little girls face as he demands your pretty Movado watch, I’m sure you would want that off duty cop to be driving by in a vehicle that he can still pursuit the bad guy.
Oh, but your also complaining about the high crime in PB. Ofcourse lets blame the cops, co you saw them taking a minor break or were they possibly discussing the tactical approach to a wanted rapist home next to yours in that gated community. Get real, blame the one responsible for prosecuting these thugs, STATE Attorneys office, that plead out the cases. Oh by the way, the take homes are part of the benefit package, since cops get paid less than firefighter that spend most of the time inside their stations. Cops are out there risking their personal life for the public “thugs” included
Good thinking Eric. Maybe the cops should let you drive like an idiot and put other people in danger. Thank god we have traffic cops. Look at the stats of how many people die from needless traffic accidents. I wonder what that number would be without traffic patrol.
I wonder? Do you think any of the county administrators in the state will take across the board pay cuts? Do you think the County Commissioners here will take pay cuts, without building in some sort of retroactive umbrella or other profittable retirement benefit increase at the same time?
Wow are you people easly lead. You want to really save some taxpayer monies? Go after the county commisioners “slush Funds” There are millions in there. Then tell them to stop spending on their pet projects such as developing the acerage or the millions they spend on mecca farms for scripts, only to have it sit vacant. Palm Beach County is not the nice little community it used to be. Law Enforcement has there hands full these days. Cut there budget, but let the officer know that you were in favor of it when he gets to your house to do the burglary report.

Most people dont put their life on the line daily for a living. This Officers deserve high risk benefits to include those pensions. The take home cars can reduce costs.
I see lots of people complaining about speeding tickets and displaying a ‘lets do away with traffic enforcement’ attitude. Food for thought; over the past ten years more than 325 people have died in traffic related accidents in Palm Beach County ALONE. More than 40% of those were a result of speeding. That is about 150 a YEAR dying in the Palm Beach County because of speeding. 4 gang bangs shoot each other and the county is up in arms…. but every month a dozen people die because of speeding and no one says a word.
A note about the take home cars… during crtitical incidents off duty officers, in their take home cars, are often the first to the scene. They make a huge difference in the number of duputies that respond.
Yes, the airlines and other public companies have been forced to take pay cuts and cut back on their benifits. However we are talking about taking care of ourselves by providing ourselves with best policing that we can. It is not fair to lump our firefighters and policemen in the same category as airline baggage personal. Airline pilots don’t rush into building burnings, they dont have to carry a gun while they work becasue people may try to kill them (on average every 53 hours a policeman is killed the US), and they run from the sounds of gunfire, were as the police run towards the gunfire, to protect US!!
Tax cuts are needed without question. But lets let those who serve to protect US have what they need to get the job done and lets make sure that they are taken care of. Otherwise, the well qaulified folks that we have will be tempted into private sector jobs where they would make a lot more money, leaving us with the bottom of the barrel to staff our police force.
Make taxs cuts, but take the money from somewhere else other than from public saftey funds.
Why dont they start by scaling back all those big pension benefits. People are living longer and these lifetime pension checks of 70 to 80% of salary are unsustainable.
Cut the budget by taking away the take home cars. How much tax money is going to gas, etc for take home cars for cops to drive their families around when they aren’t on duty. Especially those driving to the acreage from Miami/Dade etc. in dooleys (sp?). What a waste. Same goes for those in PBC fire cars and pick up trucks. We pay our own way to work and back they should too. And its not because they are going to do anything when they are off duty. I’ve been at too many redlights with an off duty cop in a patrol car that just sits there as a semi, etc. runs a solid red light. How many times do you see them drive right by a stranded motorist.
Yes they NEED cuts. Taking cars home or any where they want and driving 80 mph. Or late at night I’ve seen 6 or 8 standing around talking. When the car companies or airlines had it tough the workers took cuts. Thats the way it is.
WHERE DID THE MONEY GO? All these years, these cities and counties have been enjoying the surge in their budgets without one complaint. Now, they have to threaten us with anarchy?
Law Enforcement and EMS Services should be the last to suffer from tax cuts…The public’s safety and well being is number one and should be respected accordingly by the county commission…Sheriff Bradshaw has done an excellent job so far proving that he is fiscally responsible and with the anticipated future growth within our county, Sheriff Bradshaw has deployed his personnel accordingly with those needs…We need to provide him with a budget that will allow him to continue to provide the excellent law enforcement services that we are fortunate enough to have today.

Umm last time I checked Crime was increasing Regardless of new Ticket Writers , Ohh I mean cops on the street. And just how many of those Homocides over the last few years have been solved?
Either way, Who cares. Im moving out of Little Mexico (thats south florida) end of the year. So Spend Away. Soon this town will be all rich, maids and old people.. so tax as much as you want pbc
No problem with cut backs. Let’s look at cutting back on some of the traffic enforcement. There is real crime to focus on beyond handing out speeding tickets like halloween candy.
Absolutely no cuts for the Sheriff’s department!! If that happened we’d have the inmates (and I mean that literally) running the asylum!! If anything we should increase spending to include PROFILING, and not racial.. if it looks suspicious STOP IT AND QUESTION!

Peace ya’ll

Let EVERYBODY participate in a cutback in salary.

That purchase WAS a waste of TAXPAYER money.

NO!
Don’t be so silly!

“…..the cost of gasoline, health insurance and workers compensation continues to rise…..”
POOR BABIES. How do you think the average citizen is doing? Our costs are up even more. We don’t get subsidized.
The police should be arguing to the federal reserve. Tell them that real inflation is 12% and the need to raise rates to that level. ….

Absolutely no cuts for the Sheriff’s department!! If that happened we’d have the inmates (and I mean that literally) running the asylum!! If anything we should increase spending to include PROFILING, and not racial.. if it looks suspicious STOP IT AND QUESTION!
