'Lost's Finale Goes Back to the Future

Matthew%20Fox.jpg

Over the last two seasons, Lost fans have been jerked around more than a pit bull's chew toy. But the mysterious island drama has rebounded nicely in recent weeks while moving the multiple storylines at a much quicker pace. (You could thank Heroes for that good fortune.)

The result: Lost is good again -- even when you still don't know what the heck is going on. Which remains often. But at least I'm being entertained while remaining in a perpetual state of confusion.

Early on, Lost was known for its jaw-dropping, what-the-X*&%! cliffhangers. Well, there was a doozy of a cliffhanger in last night's finale -- the best one I've seen so far. The game-changing episode started out with a depressed, suicidal Jack on a plane, sporting The World's Ugliest Beard and guzzling booze like it was going out of style. Quite naturally, I assumed it was yet another flashback. But in the show's final minutes, it was revealed that -- duh-duh-DUH!-- we were actually getting a peek into the future, a future after the castaways were rescued.

Or were they?

"We made a mistake," glum Jack told a supermodel-looking Kate, who was almost unrecognizable with all that make-up she had packed on. "We were not supposed to leave!"

So, after trying so hard to get off the freaky island, Jack wants to go back.

But why?

Does he miss the jungle? Hurley's stench? Sawyer's stubble? And who was in the coffin? And was that really Walt Locke saw? Was Ben's prediction of doom and gloom correct? Why doesn't The One-Eyed French Guy ever die? Did Kate have a massive injection of collagen in her lips?

I don't know. But I can't wait to find out. Lost's finale did what a good finale is supposed to do -- answer some key questions while raising a few more tantalizing ones.

I think it's pretty obvious that it was Michael in the coffin, because 1)It was a black neighborhood, and 2)Nobody went, because he betrayed them all and left the island so nobody would want to go.

Also, about Charlie, he didn't want to live. He knew that he had to die to save Claire and Aaron, who are more important to him.

I Looved This epesode. I was almost at tears when I heard that they shot sayid & Jin . (I Dont like bernard for telling the others What They were up To).
When I was waching Jacks Flasth backs I was thinking "Why does this matter?" but then The last seen *Pooof* OMG! however I think that in Season4 Thier going to show us that it was Just a dream.

Could all the flash forwards have been a "Dream" Jack was having?; When asked at the funeral if he is friend or family Jack says "either"; when asked by his ex "Are you Jack" he says "NO" although he may have been Re-answering the prior question Have you been drinking?;

On the bridge his last words before the car crash
are Don't leave me, insinuating that he could be last to die...of course Ben had told him..If you make that call "Every living person now on this Island will be killed". If Ben was telling the truth, Jack would want to go back to stop those killing the survivors and The Others who are being killed off.

Cannot wait til new season starts!

Ben is my bet for the person in the casket that no one but Jack visits.

why didn't charlie just leave the door open? the water rushing in was not at such a rate to actually flood the place for probably a couple of hours. Charlie and Desmond had lots of time to put on gear and get out.

i was impressed by sawyer. he's the first guy to get it...take no prisoners, when dealing with the others. especially tom.

aside from the possibility of michael, are there any ideas as to who was in the coffin?

Posted by: Dean at May 26, 2007 3:31 AM

awesome episode.

charlie was destioned to die either way. who cares if he could've got out. He didn't want to not die.

I think it's John locke. he was the one who was right all along, and that's why jack might've been quoting his words. The letter also might say it was a suicide, which is natural as Locke would have lived a lonely life with no family or friends (because he tried to keep them on the island), and while being forced into a wheelchair again. Hell, he was just about to kill himself when he was stuck in the ditch...

I think Michael was supposed to be in that coffin. Afer all, Harlod Perrineau turned down an opportunity to be back in the Finale. He would have fit nicely there. Jack knew him, but he was neither family nor friend. And Kate couldnt care less about it...

I think Jacks flash back futures and Desmoids flash back present?? Is Jacks father alive? Why would he say at the Hospital see my father he’s drunker than me? All season I have seen Jack unshaven with gray stubble ….What with the full Black beard no gray??? Is Jack tiring to go back to the island for Julia did some of them say behind ???

it also occurred to me that a grenade usually explodes several seconds after the pin is pulled, so charlie may have had time to get out the hatch door if he had thought about it before heroicaly reacting, but what's done is done I guess...

R.I.P. Charlie. We may see you in future flashbacks unless they are all flash forwards from now on.

sorry about the double post, the post feature sent me to a website does not exist page twice in a row but apparently did post it!

i also wondered why charlie didn't swim out the window? I suppose he was resigned to his fate and it didn't occur to him. But why didn't the 'other dude' as someone else here called him grab one of the oxygen tanks and swim out side with it and push it into the portal... Also in an airtight room, the water might not pass beyond the portal/window leaving air trapped at the top.

Other than that is was a fantastic episode, with charlie getting a couragous death helping out 'his people' and claire, of course.

And Hurley was the bomb! - literally - as he blew away the others holding sawyer etc. What an unexpected use of the van and huley that was!

just 9 months til the new season... Check out Heroes if you haven't done so yet in the meanwhile, it's great also!

I agree, it was great! I had to keep asking my husband why Charlie would not try and swim thru the port hole, was it too small, was the pressure too great, etc. or did he not sign a contract yet for following season..My guess on the casket-Sawyer-that is why Jack called Kate, because of their involvement on the island. Also have been wondering where Walt and Michael have been, he sure did a bit of growing from the little boy at the beginning.

Charlie was pre-destined to die, and he knew he had to so that the others could be rescued.

Funeral home was Hoffs Drawlar funeral home is an anagram for Flash Forward. These guys are sick!!!

Only one problem that I had was with Locke - he couldnt kill his weasel of a dad, or any of the others ( god knows they deserved it) but he could kill a woman he never met in cold blood, to stop her radio contact.

I am thinking that who ever did rescue them or let them off the island, made deals with them all - like kate probably got pardoned or something. And they are all famous now, maybe she got modeling jobs.

Who was in the coffin/ neither family or friend jack said. COuld it be Ben? No one in the states knew him, so they would never go to his funeral anyway.

Why the mistake? I wonder if next year its them getting rescued and stuff, and jack trying to go back.

I can't believe it I got hooked the first season with all the briliant cliffhangers but, after the reveal of the monster (some black smoke) I stopped watching. Well I was bored today, got on line did the catch-up thing now guess what. I to cant' wait to see the next season. Finally the writer apparently got over their block.

Good going. You got me back.

Holla.

I liked it as well...I dont think Charlie is dead. I am pissed that the guy just didnt swim out the friggen window, so I am thinking the other dude will say, "hey, why dont I swim out, go through the window, grab him, and do a little Bay Watch action". I would like to see lock and the one eyed freak in a fight. Neither one will ever die.

I watched it last night, just sat there and watched it again online as I worked... and I'm still in awe. I remember watching Jack's "flashbacks", thinking after each of them, that something JUST wasn't right. I mean, I couldn't figure out how it fit in the rest of his past... and then the big WOWWWWWW at the end.
I had an idiot member of a message board I help run leak a spoiler without warning about the deaths in the finale... and while the title basically told everything, I was still holding on to the idea that Charlie was going to make it. There have been FEW times where I was on the verge of tears while watching this show.
Either way, I have no idea what I am going to do for 8 freaking months except watch all of my Season 1 and 2 DVD's... again... and of course, there's always Season 3 for Xmas!

Loved it, loved it, loved it!! Since I don't read spoilers and am apparently slow at picking things up, I did not realize this was a flash forward til the very end. I hope we get to see all the losties in the future next year. Meanwhile, looks like the Others took a big hit last night. Oh and RIP Chaalie..you died a hero. :)
