MTV VMAs: 11:30 - The final verdict is
The Raconteurs last song is a punked-up version of the first MTV hit ever - "Internet Killed The Video Star." Which is why the video channel needs to play more videos.
J.Lo is channeling her inner go-go flapper (and that's my new band's name - Go-Go Flapper, with our first single "I'll Cut You If You Touch My Vinyl Boots.") MTV is apparently starting a new Latin music channel, she says. About time. J.Lo's now announcing the Video of the Year award, which goes to Panic! At The Disco. I still hate that song.
Wait...some guy named Six has pulled an Ol Dirty Bastard and stolen the spotlight to complain that MTV never gave him his own TV show...and here come the storm troopers! Wooh! Go, live TV!
Jack Black declares that Six is the new Soy Bomb, a reference that is completely too old for most of the audience. I got it because I am old. Speaking of old...Axl Rose has apparently been spliced in a lab with the DNA of Simply Red's Mick Hucknall, because he looks jacked up. But he's introducing The Killers, one of my favorite recent-ish bands, because they love the dramatic, yet don't take themselves so seriously.
The feedback and applause end, and it's all over. The final verdict - I loved the uneveness almost more than a smoother show, because it wasn't boring. It was almost up to the rusty glory of the '80s shows. No Courtney/Madonna moments. But that OK Go thing was classic. Next time - less Sarah Silverman and hoochies. More Jack Black, in this controlled dosage.
Night!
Posted by Leslie Streeter at August 31, 2006 11:29 PMThe VMA's are completely irrelevant. When was the last time anyone turned on MTV to see a music video? Or to watch them for hours as we did in the early 80's? You're lucky to get more than one video in a row without commercial, "news", or some other useless interruption. MTV was always just a channel of advertising, but at one time it was certainly more concerned with artistry. Nowadays, it's hard to get inspired about an award for something no one has seen.
