Edgy new-music marathon set for Saturday
Another sign of how vibrant South Florida’s classical scene truly is:
A young Miami-based foursome called The f(x) is hosting its second 12-hour marathon of new and experimental music this Saturday in North Miami. Here are the details.
The free concert lasts from noon to midnight, and “audience members should feel free to come whenever they choose and stay as long as they like,” according to a news release from the group.
More than three dozen performers will be on hand for the concert, which includes works by legendary figures — Messiaen, Xenakis, Reich, Adams, Berio, Crumb — and other leading contemporary composers such as Meredith Monk, Louis Andriessen, and the three founders of New York’s Bang on a Can: Julia Wolfe, David Lang and Michael Gordon (pictured at right).
Judging by the 2007 concert disc that was sent along with the release, it sounds like concertgoers can expect strong, committed performances of this challenging music.
Composer Frederic Rzewski was on hand last year for The f(x)’s first marathon, and Wolfe and Lang are scheduled to be on hand for this one.
The afternoon before, The f(x) hosts a play-along performance of Terry Riley’s legendary In C, followed by four more hours of music from guest performers at another Miami-area performance space (there are more details on the f(x) site).
Sounds like true fans of the musical avant-garde have an edgy way to spend their weekend.
