Local economy still shrinking, state sales tax data shows

Taxable sales in Palm Beach County fell to $1.55 billion in July, down 7.8 percent from a year ago, the Florida Office of Economic & Demographic Research says in its latest report.

In the Treasure Coast, taxable sales dropped 11.1 percent. And statewide, the figures were off 7.2 percent.

Compared to July ‘06, Palm Beach County sales are down 11 percent. Economists consider taxable sales — which includes consumer and business spending — the most reliable indicator of state and local economic activity.
