PB County wages up, but barely above national average

Here’s the latest result of my ongoing (and fruitless) search for the magic statistic that will divine the future of the housing market: Palm Beach County wages rose 6.0 percent in the second quarter of 2006 from a year earlier, according to today’s wages report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That’s good news for workers’ ability to afford homes, right? After all, the national average wage rose only 4.4 percent. And Palm Beach County’s average weekly wage of $793 was the highest among the 22 Florida counties in the study.

Now for the bad news: Palm Beach County’s average weekly wage was a mere $9 above the national average of $784. Now compare Palm Beach County’s median home price of $370,400 to the national median of $217,200.

It’s gonna take a lot more than $9 a week to make up that gap.

Comparing the median cost is nice, but taking into account the unreal insurance and the high tax rate (aprox 2.2%)the carrying costs in SoFla are among the highest I’ve seen.

Not only is the average median 1/3 less, but the tax rate, and insurance rates in other areas are more favorable for aforadability.

We’ve been aiming to make this argument work now for going on like 36 months. It’s flopped. Ask the guy in the tent on the beach in Hawaii. I feel sorry for him but do the landlords? No. Can the government build houses fast enough to keep a roof over their head? Unfortunately not. Have things naturally, through the course of normal economic events, worked in their favor? No, and probably won’t.

Remember when gas went up to $1.85? WOW-that was expensive and suddenly the economy was going down the hamper since no one would be able to afford a Huge SUV and the newest Chinese flatscreen. Then, Iran tightened the screws and it went up to like $2.80 or whatever??? Well now we have it back at $2.35 and everyone is singing to Wal-Mart as they spend their “extra” money in the pocket resulting from the “low” gas prices. All relative. The stupidity of the American people cannot be gauged-you cannot measure it. Oscar Wilde said it best “no one has ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the American people.” Eventually the cost of housing will seem “inexpensive” especially when people’s gauge of price normalcy adjusts to the new price points in this area.

If I had my way I’d motion for a massive distribution of wealth and capital-immediately. But that’s not gonna fly. In the meantime, no one is going to feel sorry for middle-class wage earners (of which I count myself) and lower prices while raising salaries. It’s called inflation and the Fed does not/will not allow it to happen lest the people holding all the cash will suddenly lose a ton of money and equity. And that will really make people angry.

A friend of mine didn’t whine about buying a house in the hood-WESTSIDE Lake Worth represent. He bought it, fixed it up, dealt with the crime and blight, and sold it a year later for a nice profit. He could have moved to the beach but he didn’t…

RCA-How does your brokerage account look lately? Surely you’ve correctly gauged worldwide economic and geopolitical influences to correctly guess that oil would drop $4 yesterday even though OPEC is cutting supply and Litveshenko is threatening Putin… Right?

Hey Crazydem, I don’t see people whistling in Palm Beach County. I see alot of aggressive, angry, frustrated, depressed, road rage types.

So, what do you expect Steve when you hail from the “wrong side of the tracks”? Try to better yourself, then you’ll be whistling too!

Actually I reside in Juno Beach next to the ocean. One of the last nice places in PBC.

Steve’s home is a cardbox, located down under the fishing pier. You can drop off your food scraps to him there any night.

A cardbox? Like an ace of diamonds?
