Slow Drivers: Stay Out Of The Left Lane

Have you been minding your Ps and Qs behind the wheel the past week?

In other words, have you made it a habit to move to the right to allow faster traffic to pass?

It’s called “lane courtesy” and the National Motorists Association is promoting the “incredibly important and positive traffic safety concept” during June, the start of the summer vacation season.

Lane courtesy does more to influence safety, relieve congestion and improve traffic flow than speed limits, police enforcement or any other attempt to control driver behavior, according to the NMA.

“Better flow equals better safety,” says NMA activist Greg Mauz.

There are other benefits, as well.

You’re less likely to be in an accident.

You’ll get better gas mileage.

You’ll arrive at your destination faster.

And you won’t have to deal with road ragers.

“Left lane hogs” can really irritate some drivers, so moving to the right can eliminate stress and conflict, Mauz says.

As the NMA campaign slogan goes, “Do the RIGHT thing! Yield to faster traffic.”
