Should Michelle Obama Support Black Designers?

The First Lady wore a dress by Cuban born designer Isabel Toledo to the inauguration during the day.
The gown she wore to the inaugural ball that evening was made by Taiwan-born designer, Jason Wu.

Is it really that serious? Should the new president and his wife make special efforts to support black merchants because of the color of their skin?

No, no special effort should be made to support black designers, but good designers yes, the mere fact that she and Barrack are where they are is support enough to the african american community. Clearly, what black designers and artist should do is the same for all cultures, and therefore take this opportunity to offer their support and yes services/skills/good design to the Obama’s in the same way that others have in the hopes that they will develop a desire for that style like any thing else, its called marketing, not favors.

I am a black designer and I have been thinking of ways to support the first family, I am sure that as role models for the black community, they are receptive to african american talents like many other culters, these people are clearly very smart as well as sophisticated enough to do this with taste. Just know that from a fashion standpoint to walk out in kente cloth would not accomplish this.

No, I do not feel it was necessary for her to wear work by a black designer. As a black female, it bothers me that everyone is so into what Michelle wears. They don’t care as much about what she desires but what is best for themselves. She has many more opportunities to wear something by a black designer…at least 4 years worth of opportunities! I also design clothing but feel everyone is not going to like what I design. Why should I force my designs upon the 1st Lady just because she’African American!

Michelle should wear who she likes. I think that’s what being free is about…being able to like what one likes without feeling obligated to someone. Just because she’s black doesn’t mean she HAS to like everything black. That’s not fair. I’m sure at one point she’ll rock some awesome outfit made by an up and coming black designer.

Should Laura Bush have chosen designers because they were white?
Of course not.
It’s time to stop playing the race card over every stinking decision the Obamas make or don’t make. Next it’ll be over Obamas shoes, ties, reading glasses, dinner plates, silverware, table cloths, etc. When will this affirmative action nonsense end and just go with what we like?

No, because who cares??? And if any of the previous white first ladies would have only supported white designers, what kind of press would that have brought them, hmmmmm???
