Should John Edwards continue his campaign despite his wife’s terminal illness?

Commentary
John Edwards’ decision to move forward for the Democratic bid leaves a lot of us bewildered. But his choice isn’t just about the presidential race, it’s about Elizabeth Edwards’ life. It’s about how she wants to live, but more importantly, how she wants to die.
When their 16-year-old son died in a car crash, the Edwardses learned that life can be extinguished, at any age and at any time. It was after this tragedy that their priorities changed.
“It’s like your life is a blackboard full of stuff,” Elizabeth Edwards shared in a 2006 Newsweek.com interview. “It’s your job, your friends, your sister’s getting a divorce or your dog is sick—and then a child dies, and everything is gone.”
“And what happens then is that you’re very careful the next time you pick up that chalk.”
You’d think incurable cancer would be important enough to chalk up as a priority on her list, but life and death choices are personal, not fodder for public debate. Elizabeth Edwards made a decision, a very personal one, knowing full well that the life expectancy of Stage 4 breast cancer victims tops five years for more than three-quarters of its victims. But she’s not looking at her situation in dire terms.
“I want next year to look like last year,” she told “60 Minutes”. The only way to do that is to keep living as you always have, on your own terms.
Around a quarter of Stage 4 breast cancer victims do live longer than five years. Some live longer than any doctor could predict. Elizabeth Edwards knows that there are no guarantees. She even considers herself sort of lucky because she knows what she will likely die from, and how much time she has. Her son wasn’t so fortunate.
Leaving the presidential race is like leaving the human race for Edwards. It’s her passion and her life. Elizabeth Edwards chooses to go gently into that good night like any other day. Her choice to live life on her own terms is life-affirming, not shortsighted.
Rebuttal
It’s true that no one else can say what the Edwards family “should” do - I suspect that their decision will be an ongoing and very personal one. And I have enough logs in my own eye, that I will not criticize someone courageously confronting a painful situation.
But the wife and mother in me still watches with concern, not wanting John Edwards to have regrets later. Although Elizabeth is enthusiastic about the campaign - acknowledging its intense stress and unusual time away from family — I hope that isn’t the choice she feels she “should” make as a high-powered woman, instead of preferring precious time with her husband and children.
No one can answer that question but her, and no one thinks cancer patients should stay home and give up. But conservatives aren’t the only ones trying to give Elizabeth an “out” if she wants it. Matthew Rothschild of the Progressive magazine recently editorialized that that if John Edwards had stepped aside he would have told “our work-obsessed society that he’s got his priorities straight.”
In the 90’s, NFL player Chris Spielman gave up his career when his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. And Robertson McQuilkin stepped down as president of Columbia International University to tend to his Alzheimer’s-afflicted wife, saying, “She has cared for me fully and sacrificially all these years; if I cared for her for the next 40 years I would not be out of her debt.”
Today, Family Life, a worldwide broadcasting and family-advice organization, annually presents a “Robertson McQuilkin Award” to someone demonstrating that same “covenant-keeping love.” Dennis Rainey, Family Life’s founder, explained in an interview that, “We have a culture that is craving real love stories like these. We wanted to honor someone making that commitment until the end.” And he added that where many men desert cancer-afflicted wives, he applauded the Edwardses; for “modeling commitment to one another in the midst of a crisis.”
Elizabeth told 60 Minutes that she didn’t want her legacy to be making her husband drop out of the race. Instead, how powerful would it be if, down the road, John Edwards’ legacy was dropping out of the race for her; setting aside his political potential for a season to demonstrate his covenant-keeping love.

Whether to run or not, despite his wife’s condition, is a decision for them to make together…and it’s no one else’s business to criticize or condemn whatever decision they make. Choosing to vote for Edwards, should his campaign continue, is up to the individual voter to decide.

Both Diane and Shaunti lead off by saying this is a purely personal decision and that no one else has the right to say what the Edwards family should or shouldn’t do.
But then Shaunti goes on to do just that, arguing that Mrs. Edwards may not want them to drop out of the race, but that Mr. Edwards should do so anyway—“to demonstrate his covenant-keeping love.” What the heck is she talking about? Any guesses here?

By starting out a political campaign by announcing a spouse has terminal cancer Edwards opens his campaign to show voters he is just like us: battling real issues. I doubt the Edwards will be apart much on the campaign trail. If this is her goodbye then she will be close to her husband and this togetherness will be worth every second. What makes Edwards unique is the husband’s Presidential bid but is she unique at all? Yes because she will have the best medical care the free-world has. We save that for politicians. The private doctors that fly with the politicking couple do not serve the public, do not serve veterans or anyone making ends meet in lieu of illness. THIS is why she is unique.
But in truth she is NOT unique. Millions of families face this sort of dilemma. No one asks a fry cook why he is back at work after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. No one asks a hotel service worker why she is still at work with the diagnosis of impending death ahead. How many voters are making tough decisions of what bills to pay and what bills must wait to keep getting kemo. Hopefully the Edwards camp will see some of the motley unable-to-get-insurance-because-of-prior illness during their campaign. Maybe she will visit at a free clinic to show just how difficult getting medical service for people with no medical coverage is. Probably if she does it will just be PR. Shake a few hands, kiss a baby and make a speech. In and out done in 15 minutes and gone. Its politics as usual on the campaign trail and tear jerks are part of PR. I am old and cynical and they are politicians. Pardon if I do not weep on cue.

What’s the big deal. So John Edwards wants to continue to campaign while his wife is being treated for cancer. Newt Gingrich didn’t have this problem. He just divorced her.

Just remember when you hear news about Walter Reed Hospital and its failures is there have been no complaints by politicians who use the same hospital. Why politicians were shocked! Shocked? All they had to do was go down one floor to find how bad it was…but no, being shocked is good for PR! Our government politicos, of course, have their own private floor staffing private US service doctors, private suites and private entrance so politicians do not have to contend with the average patients them of US military service personnel. Now, if they had to go through the regular entrance to get what veteran care there is for everyday grunts dontcha know they would have known and squawked a hell of a lot sooner.

I’m very disappointed in Diane and Shaunti for making this a topic. It’s really no one’s business. And bravo to Lyrazel for noting that the Edwardses are lucky in some regards. Namely Mrs. Edwards has a choice available to her, whereas the fry cook might not.
Also, does anyone but me find it disingenuous for a person who is opposed to Edwards’s candidacy in general to insist that his wife’s illness dictates that he must curtail his run? I doubt “covenant-keeping love” has as much to do with it as a desire to see the candidate withdraw.

Personally, I would not want my husband to cease his life and his plans because I am dying or have died. I would want him, and our son, to do their best to get the very most out of life. If there IS an afterlife or if there is only a memory of my in their minds to call afterlife then I want them to proceed knowing I’m happy if they are.
It’s intensely personal. This should not be a matter for judgment of someone as a leader.
However, Lyrazel has a great point. Perhaps the Edwards do plan to point out that the course they CHOSE is a course many MUST, ie, the fry cook.

Wow I have to disagree with most people, I feel this is one of the better topics here in quite a while. There are many issues wrapped up in this story and as much as people want to play the “personal” card, you give up most if not all of that when you enter into the highest rings of the political circus.
I think that the Edwards should put out that they had the luxury of making a choice here. That many people have no decision other than to work every day since they have bills that will never get paid otherwise.
And it’s a legitimate concern of voters whether the President will be understandably distracted and have his time impigned upon when his wife’s life is dwindling down in a more and more debilitating condition.
And there is the legitimate concern for his family, not as political circus but as I would hope you would feel for your family or neighbor when their spouse and parent is dealing with a known and imminent demise.
I think there are many legitimate and important issues to discuss here, the political issues, the personal/family issues, and the work/life issues. Is being President another “job” where one should choose life or work if possible? Or is it a service that rises above the considerations of an ordinary job?

i actually have to agree with joe on this. certainly the decision of how the illness impacts the decision to run for pres is a personal one, and should be made by the edwards family. but after that, it opens the door for lots of interesting discussion.
i think he should run, and i hope the democrats nominate him. his charm and courtroom appeal mask what is at the end of the day an underwhelming candidate for president with limited experience. we’re talking about a one term senator from a small state.

“If we want a guarantee that the president will have no personal-life crises or distractions, we should insist on electing only single people.”
Yes but there is difference between unpredictable things and things that are glaringly and sadly known. The odds that Elizabeth Edwards will live to the end of even a single term of an Edwards Presidency is less than 50-50. So you can’t guarantee that anyone will not face the vagaries of life, but we are almost assured that Edwards will face a very difficult situation.
Blabla - I will always maintain that Senators are generally far worse candidates than Governors, however Edwards outclasses anyone that the Repubs are putting forth with the possible exception of Hagel (also a Senator) who has about a snowballs chance in h-e-double hockey sticks of getting the nomination.

As usual, the Christian here wants to run other people’s lives, the liberal lets them run their own lives.

I would also add that despite her illness, Elizabeth Edwards wants the campaign to proceed. Furthermore, every person I’ve known with cancer or any other terminal disease has pressed on — ‘cause sitting at home and waiting to die is not what people want to do with their lives, regardless of the situation.

I’ve often said that the MAJOR difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Republicans believe in government regulations on personal behavior but not for business practices. Democrats believe the opposite.
I’ll second (and third, fourth, fifth, etc) everybody else. If they want to continue with the campaign, it’s nobody elses call. If you feel that the situation would distract him too much for him to be an effective candidate or president, don’t vote for him.

I just might vote for John Edwards because of his wife’s cancer. My husband was just diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma. The medication he has to take retail cost $18,000/year over and above his other meds. And, he is in good health, except for illnesses acquired after age 65. He is 75 and active and responsible. Once his insurance runs out because of high cost of his medication, we will hopefully receive help. The VA told him they don’t know if they can provide the medication because it is so new (over 2 years’ old). Sen Chambliss just sympathizes, and his Doctor just agreed it was expensive. So much for the golden years. You don’t think you’ll get cancer and that is someone else’s problem. Well, it isn’t, even if you eat right and it is expensive even if you have saved and invested, following the rules for success. If you are middle class, you may be poor in your retirement years because of a predicament like this. Hooray for Edwards for address a taboo subject that we may all be faced with. Rah, Rah for Elizabeth to go on living even with facing a death sentence. It applies to all of us.

I agree with Joe that this topic does bring up a lot of different stuff - death and dying, family, the difference between the health care available for those in this country with a lot of money and those with none for starters. If you’re poor you just won’t live as long!
Candide and others have pointed out that “Christianity is totalitarianism in religion.” So is Islam of course. They both attract those who want to control everyone. They come from the same root, Abraham’s religion. Christianity has just been watered down in the west by ideas about democracy, that’s all.

I saw on “Mysteries of the bible” the exact same thing, (about Islam and Christianity both coming from the same root, Abraham’s religion). It pointed out the passage where Hagar, (Abraham’s mistress/mother of his first child, who was given to him by Sarah), had just been thrown out into the wilderness with her son Ishamel, and how God saved them. the program had a strong argument that pointed out that Ishmael was a forebear of the Palestinians who now greatly oppose the Isareli goverment. Anyway, your remarks triggered that memory and had me rethinking once more about that episode.

SusieHM, Are you familiar with this book? Annie Laurie Gaylor’s Woe to the Women, the Bible Tells Me So is a refreshing look at … Christianity: it is harmful to women, and they should stay as far way from it as possible. This is a very harsh and controversial position to take, but Gaylor backs it up well in her book. Each chapter addresses a topic of interest to women and explains how the Bible treats the issue. For instance, the “Creation” chapter explains how the Bible shows women as the cause of the downfall of the human race, “Rape” shows alarming views featured in the Old and New Testament about this awful violation of women, and “The Strange Woman” shows how the Bible continually insults women and makes them metaphors for all kinds of evil things. Apparently, the Christian god sees no problem in men ravaging women for their own pleasure, and he even sees exposing women’s genitals as suitable punishment for their pride. Gaylor shows this in the book when she quotes from Isaiah 3:16-17: “Moreover the Lord sayeth, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet: Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will discover their secret parts.” If nothing else, Woe to the Women should be read by those who feel that there is nothing sexist about Christianity or the Bible, so that they can discover shocking verses such as this, which Gaylor proves shows a very negative view of women. Mothers who would not let their children hear this kind of violence and insulting language toward women on TV are also convinced that the Bible is a good, moral guide. Woe to the Women provides startling and convincing evidence to the contrary.

I used to fear death way back when I still believed that dying meant I was going to have to go stand in front of the big ol’ spankin’ daddy so he could tell me what a horrible ungrateful wretch I was and send me to be tortured for eternity. Christianity has done more than its fair share to make death a thing to be feared. You’d have to be some kind of egotist not to fear that the good you’ve done in life won’t outweigh the “sins” you’ve committed.
thankfully, as an agnostic, I can be a bit more objective in my view of death. Now I kind of look at it as an adventure…you know, like jumping on a plane to a place you’ve never heard, don’t know where is, and don’t know anyone that lives therre. With no money or credit cards. Still kind of scary, but in a good, anticipatory way instead of the spirit sapping dread that it used to be.

Wow, watch the excerpt. This an excellent example of why women’s/girls issues are my top priority when it’s voting time.
Listen to the real life stories of just a few women. This is important. This is about all women. Finally somebody is talking about it, it’s not right the BS women have to put up with.
I’m voting for women from now on.

The first thing Adam said to Eve? Hey toots, new in town?
Nah, everyone knows it was the prior discussion about Adam’s first wife that got her to eat the fruit. See, there she was naked in the garden all pure and saintly and she finds out he had a prior marriage he never told her about. Left to her own directives to uncover answers when she ate the fruit she knew all about Lilith. To keep her from taking Adam to court for bigamy God sent them from the garden…

Talking snakes, people that appear out of nowhere able to speak to each other. Adam & Eve & the magical garden of eden, lol A lot of people are just plain ignorant. I also have some ocean front property in Kansas for sale for ya.
You would think by now all the bible freaks would get a clue but it’s only getting worse. The ongoing wars are proof of religious ignorance. No wonder, anybody that believes in such fairy tales are nuts.
And now millions of $’s are going to be spent on the Pope to investigate if he is eligible for Sainthood? He’s just an old guy that probably needs to lighten up. Nobody that discourages birth control use, especially to poor uneducated women is a saint, more like a devil. Shame on all those ignorant people that treat him like some kind of “God”.

gulliblepeeps, You would think! I agree about the pope esp. when he’s telling those women in Africa (oh, that was the last one) to have more babies so they’ll get AIDS from the sire fer shur and breed babies that already have AIDS and then watch them die! I’ve always thought if I were the devil (for those who believe in a devil) the best place to hide and fool people would be in the church. Seeing the dead bodies of old popes displayed in the Vatican behind glass was kind of weird too. But I guess it makes sense to an organization that used to worship bones of so-called saints. Nuns, who have given their lives to the church, have to raise their own money to take care of their sisters in old age and frail health because the church doesn’t have any money for them. But the pope has plenty of money to see if he can be sainted? There is truly something wrong with this picture. And I’m not sayin’ the catholic church is worse than any other church.

Why can’t these people clean up their site? I really don’t care about transgendered sex; how to buy legal drugs in illegal quantities, or some half naked lady wanting to blow my socks off (via the internet)for $5 a minute.
Sorry I couldn’t answer yesterday Lozen but I’ll try to answer today. Before I begin, everyone please if you know someone who is in an abusive relationship, please, please, PLEASE speak with them. Don’t let what happened yesterday at the CNN center happen to one of your friends or family. OK back to the topic:
Annie Laurie Gaylor’s Woe to the Women, the Bible Tells Me So is a refreshing look at … Christianity: it is harmful to women, and they should stay as far way from it as possible. This is a very harsh and controversial position to take, but Gaylor backs it up well in her book. Each chapter addresses a topic of interest to women and explains how the Bible treats the issue.
I’ve never read her book and I probably will look it up at the library, (if they have it) and check it out. However I do consider myself a religious person, (not a christian), and I strongly believe in a God or Supreme being who is the creator of my life. Now just because I consider myself religious does not mean I will close my mind to other thoughts or interpretations. I believe the truth is somewhere in the middle of the extremes on each side, (not saying the book is extreme, since I’ve never read it).

Another woman murdered by a husband/boyfriend. Did you hear the CNN report “it was just a domestic”. So if it’s just a guy assassinating his wife we shouldn’t worry? How many is that this week?
As long as the power structure remains unbalanced in male hands, we will have violence against women, war, & the pervasive sexual abuse purpetrated by men.
How many of you out there have absolutely HAD IT WITH MALE VIOLENCE? The men in this world need to SHAPE UP. Women are sick & tierd of the murders, sex attacks, robberies, WARS & assassination of women & children. STOP IT NOW.
If you have children, especially boys, do NOT ALLOW them to roam around free at all hours of the night, especially if you know they are prone to trouble. If one of your family members is abusive to their wife, step in & stop ignoring it. Stop supporting sexist religious groups & countries that treat women like property.
And clean up your blog WtoW ! ! !
This is one place you CAN control the criminal & sexual deviants. Or is “giving into” whatever men want is how you would like the world to stay?

John Edwards should drop from the race purely because he has no chance of winning.
It would surprise me if the Democratic base nominated him and I think he is the one candidate of the current big three that would be soundly defeated in a national election. He has too many negatives for the GOP to exploit and not enough positive checks to offset them.
Let him spend the time caring for his wife and then regroup to fight another day (although I honestly don’t believe his day will ever come).

A woman who worked with us for 20 years was shot and killed by her husband week before last. Now comes the horrible tragedy at CNN. Sometimes it makes you wonder if you ever can know another person. This woman learned what kind of man she had hooked up with, but it was too late for her by the time she found out. It makes me wonder if the most dangerous thing a woman can do is associate with males. I know not all men are violent physically and emotionally but so many are. How can we tell the difference? My ex once threw me down the stairs off our front porch because I was arguing with him. He had never shown any signs of violence before. My fiancee slapped me one night because I was tired and didn’t want to have sex with him. He was one of the most mild-mannered men I’d ever known. I stopped seeing him because I was not dependent on him. Another man I dated threatened to kill me while we were in a heated discussion. A doctor in the work place drew back his fist and would have hit me if I hadn’t left just because he told me to do something and I was a little slow in responding. My sister was beaten by her husband and went to the hospital for stitches several times. One of my best friends was beaten over and over by her husband when he was drunk. My sister and my friend stayed with these men because they “loved” them and because they had small children they couldn’t support alone. This constant violence against women is taking place every minute every day. I am so depressed right now.

lozen, I don’t have stats to back this up, but I would suspect that men that routinely refer to women as b*** are more likely to be agressive toward them. They have been taught to devalue women and likely don’t think that women can even say no to sexual advances. They feel that they have an entitlement to sex with a partner & control of everything. What’s the problem is their attitude. These types of men don’t view their behavious as problematic, and there are MANY MANY men that are like that.
So, how do you change general attitudes towards women? That’s difficult and it’s going to take a lot of time. However, I would suggest that it starts with working to get more women into positions of positive influence in all areas of society. If society ever did evolve to the point where men and women operated on a truly equal footing, then I think that you would see less abuse & sexual crimes.
Isn’t the problem really with how boys are raised?
Maybe we can’t change the world but we most certainly can do something about it in the United States. Why do we allow men to get away with this behavior? Schools could have mandatory required courses that would help curb violence in the future. Public awareness, talk shows, news programs could guide parents on how to raise our children to be non-violent & non-sexist.
What do you think it would take to get something like that implemented?

Jack wouldn’t the logical solution is figure out why the ones causing all the problems are acting that way? Isn’t violence mostly a learned & encouraged behavior? I do notice though that no one fesses up to the fact that many men are attracted to violence against women, and often talk about women with their buddies, reducing them to body parts, or worse. I know, I’ve heard it my whole life.
No need to address a culture of mainly male violence because the world is made up of violence? so why bother talking about violence directed towards women? Or rape? Why does everybody give up on males & let whatever happen, happen?
Why do you think classes along with an entire social change as to how boys should be raised wouldn’t work?
Letting women off the hook for murdering an abuser is not the answer to the problem of men acting like out of control animals.

I think that teaching boys to RESPECT others generally, and girls and women specifically, is the only long-term solution (if there will ever will be a solution). Culturally, what do we do with vile “games” like “Grand Theft Auto”? Given my libertarian tendencies and my belief in First Amendment rights, I have a hard time with the thought of legally banning it. Yet, I think that the corrosive nature of things like that may warrant that action. What about fiction (literature, plays, film) that depict violence against women? Do we start banning things like that? I struggle with that. But if there were a video game put out that depicted, say, the player having to lynch as many Black people as possible in order to win the game, or round up as many Jews as possible and throw them on cattlecars to win the game, I have the feeling that perhaps people would be screaming bloody murder and demanding that the creators be prosecuted under hate laws.
Who are these parents that allow their male children to own such games? What in the world are they thinking?

This isn’t Utopia. I was offering a realistic solution. Those type of men are animals and should be treated as such. One time in the past I came to the defense of a woman who was being beaten and I ended up in jail. The woman was mad at me for hurting her abusive spouse.

What about women that routinely refer to women as b***? Have they been taught to devalue themselves? Women that call each other such names will automatically say yes to sexual advances or not? There are many, many women like that. In 20 plus years of arguing and loving I don’t think my wife and I have passed 5 cuss words towards one another. I am not making excuses for bad men but they should not be as an example of manhood. Abusers stand alone, individually, otherwise you’re engaging in sexism towards men.

Just to interject… Animals are getting unfairly maligned here. “Treat them like animals” suggests that animals deserve the same harsh penalties that violent killers do.
And violent men aren’t “acting like animals,” either; animals are incapable of malice and viciousness, which is why I like them so much better than most people.

Not to blame the victim, but women’s behavior does often contribute to the problem of domestic violence. The solution shouldn’t focus solely on men.

Unfortunately, in my experience, most women are very reluctant to take any responsibility at all for domestic violence other than to say “I picked the wrong guy.” And while playing the martyr does have its reward, it ultimately doesn’t solve the problem.

And not to disagree with a genius scientist like BC, but my observations suggest that violence is pandemic throughout the animal world, from top to bottom, with humans being no exception. There is a part of us that likes to dominate others, so many relationships include ongoing power struggles. Not condoning anything, just seeking understanding.

Archie, I’m sorry but I can’t go along with your argument. How many women beat and kill other women? How many women beat or kill men? A few do, yes. But every single day you hear of men beating, raping and killing women. Abusers stand alone, individually, otherwise you’re engaging in sexism towards men. Would you say, “White people who hate blacks stand alone, individually, otherwise you’re engaging in racism toward all whites?” No. There are many white people who are racists. We know all white people aren’t racist, but we don’t feel a need to make such a statement because when we talk about racists we know we aren’t talking about all whites. We know all men are not abusers. But the problem we women have is telling the difference between the abusers and the men who aren’t abusers. What can we think when men who seem like good men suddenly become abusive like the men I mention in my post above? It seems to me that a lot of men - not all men - resort to violence quickly and easily when they don’t get what they want. Are we teaching males in this culture things that cause so many to resort to violence? Why aren’t more women abusers? Why aren’t many women beating, raping, and killing others? Women get just as angry and frustrated as men do so what causes the different response? Male violence against women is a huge problem. Pretending it doesn’t happen or that we are sexist when we talk about it doesn’t do anybody any good. Denial just keeps our heads in the sand.

Other than simply saying that a certain percentage of men are total louts, do you have any theories, lozen, as to what triggers violence? In my previous relationships, a few women seemed to enjoy “pushing my buttons” and I was angry a lot. I’m not a hitter, so don’t start accusing me of anything, ok? In most of my other relationships, there was no anger, ever. It almost seems that some women are biologically programmed to be provocative. Any thoughts?

lozen, first and foremost, we are on the same side in this issue. How do you think I feel, as a man, when I hear a story that a woman I love was abused at the hands of a man? Despite your poor opinion of me, I’m a very sensitive person. Too sensitive.
But feeling bad doesn’t solve any problems. The terrible assaults you speak of were preceded by much smaller assaults over a period of time in 99% of the cases. There’s a chance to stop it, but as Jack pointed out, most women will actually resent any potential rescuers.
By Archie

Lozen, I am sorry but I do think it’s sexist to say some of the things that you and the other poster said. I still think the male abuser represents himself, not me and all men in general. I believe women don’t kill, rape, or abuse others as much because they can’t win physically most of the time but when they know they can beat someone they will attack. I have never said men don’t attack but I stand by my statement. Being the martyr doesn’t do any good either. Also sometimes you do have to say you don’t mean all white people … depending on the setting. Women don’t get a pass from being called sexist and I am not in denial. I have a daughter so no, I don’t want her abused in any way but each guy has to take stock of himself. I do think we need to change the culture for men and maybe classes will help but the classes can’t give the impression that women can do whatever they want without fault. Classes should be used to teach men non-violence, that’s it.

Hey man. I agree with your 2 cents on the topic.
Just some things to note: I am a BIG guy and have had plenty of women start beating on me. Whether I was working as a bouncer as well as in a relationship. I would just be looking at them with WTF in my eyes - before having them arrested.
And another thing to ponder: Who is generally the bully at school? The pain at work? The issue in race relations?
Answer: The one with power/responsibility. And as we see women get into more powerful positions, we also see their participation in these violent situations increase.
So, what I gather from the actual facts is that most humans, men and women, do not have the restraint to control themselves when in positions of power. See Stanford Jail experiment for more proof.
What’s more is that people on both sides, like the two women on here, try to sabotage efforts to resolve this because it would mean that they too would have to give up some power.

Funny because I found the same trend regarding athletic women. The business women argue like they are lawyers, and general women without goals just whine too damn much like a kid. The heavy ones seem too emotionally damaged for a partnership as well.
Enjoyed chatting with you today, buddy. I was starting to waver a little in my beliefs, but you’ve talked some sense back in me. F em.

You know the best way to drive a woman bonkers? Giver her what she ants. Or should I say, give her what she claims she wants. Makes them miserable every time. Then they start b and get you p off, which apparently is what they were after all along. Turns them on.*
Isn’t that the truth. And with guys being problem solvers and all, we fall for it every time.

It may be a shame, but until they have another use all I will be doing is f-ing them.
Take it easy. I have to catch a plane for a scouting gig I have in Texas. YeeHaw!

“It may be a shame, but until they have another use all I will be doing is f-ing them.”
THIS is the type of man that we need to stop creating.
JokesOn is a perfect example of an uneducated man who wasn’t raised properly. When you raise boys to act ignorant this is what you get. JokesOn was probably rewarded for overly aggressive behavior & was not tought respect of others, particularly women.
Men like JokesOn are an excellent example of why our world is so violent, war-filled & sexually dangerous.
Women are miserable at times because we have to share the same planet with out of control men who make trouble for everybody.
Women are not disgruntled, we’re DAMN ANGRY at you idiots. You were in jail JokesOn? What a surprise. How much money have you cost taxpayers over the years because of your behavior?
Women are far better team players than men like you could ever be. Your problem is deep down you know it’s true. The only outlet you have for your self-hatred is blaming women & putting them down when they tell the truth.
Now, raising boys to be non-violent is the key. That doesn’t mean you raise them to be girls, you just do not reward agressive, rude & sexist behavior. They will be much happier adults, less likely to be in jail & would make terrific husbands & fathers.
All around happier & better for everybody.

“And as we see women get into more powerful positions, we also see their participation in these violent situations increase.”
LOL oh yea women are going around everyday shooting & stabbing thier husbands, EVERYDAY in the news just like the guys now. Oh yea women are shooting up malls & schools now, even kidnapping raping & killing boys all over this country !
Women getting equal power with men means women will be as disgusting as men. LOLOLOLOL

My suggestion is to teach the concept of teamwork, something which eludes most ladies I’ve ever met.
Granny why do the bad ones blame women for whatever they can, even if it’s so ridiculous? Instead of thinking about why they get a sort of joy out of being mean & like you said, overly agressive? I can’t imagine living my life like that, seem like a type of depression? Do you think men who were raised to be over the top males were never taught empathy? or manners? Having decent relationships with anybody would be difficult so really anger & agression is the only thing they know.
I personally don’t know any guys like JokesOn.

ATLgrl I believe you may be right about depression being one of the root causes.
Did everyone notice how quickly this blog was taken over by an aggressive male? We were all talking about that horrible murder of the woman at CNN & discussing what we all can do as a society to do something about excessive male agression. Being open & honest about anything can lead to positive change.
The aggressive man began to belittle women & completely hault an important discussion. I am certain that is why real solutions to male violence has never been properly addressed, which makes me sad for all the little boys who will end up like Mr JokesOn.

—If you can beleive it, I had a guy try to put a restraining order against me last year. F-ing P*.—
err, actually we all believe it. I guarantee you that when I have children I will NOT raise a son to think like this guy. Ya have to wonder what his parents were like, but shouldn’t we all have enough sense to realize when you’re acting like a jerk? I don’t know maybe really depressed guys act out like this & it’s a known fact guys don’t like to go to a doctor, especially for depression.
