Should the National Education Association fund ideological causes?

Shaunti Feldhahn, a right-leaning columnist, writes the commentary this week and Diane Glass, a left-leaning columnist, responds.
Commentary
National Education Association (NEA) materials say it is America’s “largest professional employee organization” and is “committed to advancing the cause of public education.” In actuality, the NEA isn’t a standard professional association, but a union of 3.2 million dues-paying members — including millions of teachers who believe membership is obligatory, even when it isn’t. And according to new financial reports, it is committed to advancing a whole lot more causes than just public education.
Of nearly $300 million in dues in 2005, more than $90 million went for “political activities and lobbying” or “contributions, gifts and grants.” This would be fine if the NEA leadership was solely lobbying for better conditions for teachers, or supporting educational initiatives. But a huge portion of their funds are slanted toward openly left-leaning ideological causes.
Why, for example, should teacher dues be supporting overtly Democratic causes like Democratic campaign consultants Terris & Barnes ($368,000), the North Carolina Democratic Party Building Fund ($25,000), or the Floridians for All Committee ($249,000) which exists to “redirect” Florida toward Democrats?
It is a bit infuriating that those politically-slanted causes got so much more than groups like Rebuild America’s Schools, which received just $20,000 in 2005 to help modernize our crumbling public schools.
Even when NEA money does support education-specific initiatives, it almost exclusively promotes left-leaning policies and fights conservative ones (such as the $2.5 million spent largely in opposing Bush’s No Child Left Behind policy).
In a phone interview, Tracey Bailey of the Association of American Educators (AAE) explained why independent associations for educators are growing while the NEA isn’t. As he said, “Almost all AAE members come to us because they are frustrated with the NEA, and that their money is supporting causes against their personal beliefs.” By contrast, “we don’t contribute to political parties, endorse candidates or take up issues outside the classroom; we simply help and support teachers with how to be the best teacher they can be.”
Despite these problems, the NEA is still the largest game in town, with great power to improve public education if they would just realize that liberals don’t have a monopoly on excellent educational ideas.
Rebuttal
It’s disappointing when you find out you’re supporting causes you oppose. Like when I found out Catholic philanthropist and Domino Pizza founder Thomas Monaghan supported Operation Rescue, an anti-abortion organization known for its shock value tactics.
It’s disappointing. But it’s not surprising. We may have the right to put our hard-earned dollars into organizations aligned with our values but the National Education Association’s partisan funding isn’t breaking news. Look at all of the government-funded conservative causes payrolled during the Bush presidential term.
Faith-based social service initiatives are on the rise. In 2005, more than $2.1 billion was distributed through federal grants to religious organizations. All of us pay taxes that fund these federal grants. Being an agnostic, atheist or Buddhist doesn’t exempt anyone. Soon, all of us may be contributing our tax dollars to a new kind of prison reform, found in states like Texas and Iowa, where inmates are offered luxuries you’d find at grandmas house, so long as they’re willing to undergo an evangelical religious conversion.
But taxpayer-funded faith-based social services aren’t the only examples of partisan funding. And secular organizations aren’t just funding liberal causes. Contributions from so-called secular organizations contributed about half of all operating expenses to conservative groups fighting the consecration of gay bishops, reports the Episcopal Diocese of Washington Web site.
Then there is the proliferation of think tanks hiding under the guise of secular policy-making that make it evident that the NEA is just another organization with personal interests, not a nefarious anomaly. The “Independent Women’s Forum,” started out as a group called “Women for Clarence Thomas”. If their launch topic isn’t telling enough, ask yourself why this nonprofit has received over 3 million dollars in funding from conservative groups. According to their Website, they are just another “non-partisan” non-profit.
The National Education Association should contribute members’ dues to non-partisan causes out of respect for all of their members. But they don’t. That’s hardly unusual. It’s the same reality American taxpayers endure and liberal contributors face with other so-called secular organizations. So, the NEA is liberal. Tell me something I don’t already know.

This exactly why I chose to not join the NEA or it’s state counterpart GAE. In Georgia we are fortunate to have a true PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION that is not a union. It is called PAGE. The only lobbying PAGE does is for educational issues that deal directly with teachers, teaching, and learning. Most people join NEA for the liability insurance, not because they like the organization or its stands on the issues.

A South Dakota bill, which would have required hospitals to tell rape victims about the availability of emergency contraception—that’s right, just tell women about it, not dispense it—failed last week. I don’t understand the huge objection to emergency contraception, especially in a state like South Dakota where they keep trying to ban abortion. Easy access to EC means less abortions which is a good thing, right? Even Catholic doctrine states that until a fertilized egg has implanted, it’s not a pregnancy. You’d think that this would be the perfect solution to the issue; it doesn’t terminate a pregnancy, but it lets a woman have control over her body.
I despise South Dakota & the people who allow this to happen. I refuse to have anything to do with such an ignorant woman state. Only a fool would live there.

I sent one last week about that and our resident cur, but apparently it didn’t work. Maybe we can jam up their emails with complaints, and they might have an idea how we feel.
BTW - GAE (Georgia Association of Educators), the state affiliate with NEA, is not a union. We don’t have a union in Georgia. Most teachers with common sense are in GAE, and therefore NEA, for the liability insurance.

Chuck - with regard to PAGE, I was told a long time ago that PAGE only pays if you win your case. I don’t know if that is true, but I do have a friend who switched from PAGE to GAE because of an incident that occurred, and he could not get anyone from PAGE to help him. Getting past the spam…
To answer the question: Yes, the NEA should fund ideological causes—specifically, those that favor improving our public education system rather than dismantling it.
The fact that those causes are overwhelmingly liberal and Democratic is, I’m sure, the sheerest coincidence. After all, it’s not like Republicans hate public education and want it destroyed. Heavens, no.
By Brian Curtis

(Clicked Post too fast…)
The same goes for supporting candidates. Clearly the NEA should support pro-education candidates and oppose anti-education ones.
Again, these will tend to be your sane (i.e., liberal) candidates rather than scary religious freaks and government-hating anarcho-capitalist types, but that’s again just a big coincidence.
By chuck
February 28, 2007 10:21 AM | Link to this
So “pro-education” means what BC? Can you name even ONE candidate who is against education? As usual, you can’t see beyond the end of your nose. In “LIBSPEAK” what you are saying is that if a candidate does not believe in YOUR BRAND of socialist education (indoctrination), then they are against education. Also as usual, there is NO ROOM in the closed mind of a liberal for ANY OTHER WAY of doing things than the way YOU SEE FIT. What that USUALLY means is that the government has to be in charge of EVERYTHING.
While I am in favor of keeping public education…especially since that is what I do…I also see the need for improvement and for choice. Funny how choice is a good thing to liberals when it comes to KILLING babies, but not such a good thing when it comes to educating the ones who escape the abortionists. I would gladly put what I do against ANY private school education. I can compete because I’m good at what I do. My school can compete because we do a great job. Some schools can’t say that. Why should children be trapped in those schools when the public is not willing to do what it takes to fix them?
By ProWoman
February 28, 2007 10:37 AM | Link to this
Nobody is killing babies, except maybe abusive parents or dangerous foster care homes. Young women who dump their newborns in dumpsters is killing babies, lack of healthcare kills babies.
Abortion terminates an unwanted pregnancy, which is a fetus. Just wanted to clear that up.
Now, the problem has been & will always be that not enough parents are actually qualified to raise children. These children are going to perfectly good schools that become bad due to kids that don’t care & cause problems then go home to parents who can’t be bothered. Better family planning would help. What does anybody expect “the public” to do? “The public” is having too many children they don’t even know how to raise correctly.

You make a great point Brian, and I believe in neighborhood schools. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to fix the bad ones. I think the solution lies more with the parents of said schools than the teachers and students. Short of mandating teachers to work at a school, or paying them a double salary, teachers also shy away from the bad schools.

Chuck and Monica I’m primarily directing this question your way since you are “in the system” and best situation to respond. When it comes to improving GA public schools what do you think or believe is the one thing that could be done that would have the greatest impact?
Why should children be trapped in those schools when the public is not willing to do what it takes to fix them?” Chuck can you expound on the ‘what it takes to fix them’? As an insider what do you see that needs fixing?
As an outsider and non-consumer of public education I’m constantly surprised about how much effort seems to be spent and respent on the curriculum for GA schools. In my business one of the rules of them when evaluating how to fill a market need or solve a problem is whether or not an off-the-shelf solution already exists that can used rather than developing one in-house. This allows the problem/issue to be addressed more quickly, efficiently, and economically than solving the problem in-house. It seems to me that a prudent course of action to define the curriculum would be to look at which states’ students have been in the top ten for test scores and then use their curriculum and teaching methods since they are obviously successful.

Georgia is becoming an anti-woman state.
The govt doesn’t want parents to prevent cervical cancer in their girls. Gee maybe we should not require polio shots either.
If I was a young girl now & my parents wouldn’t let me get that shot because “ohhhhh noooo she’ll have sex ! !”. Years later I got cancer due to getting HPV from a bf or husband, I’d sue the S** out of them & make them pay my medical & funeral bills.
OH NICE GA wants all women getting abortions to be asked if they want a sonogram ! Our Govt wants to encourage women to continue with unwanted pregnancies ! (they actually said that). Who do they think is going to pay for all these sonograms????? GOOD IDEA FOLKS ! Our Govt wants women to have children they don’t want or can’t afford ! GREAT IDEA GA ! LETS make our schools worse, more child abuse, more poverty, more idiots raising idiots ! Let’s start building jails now to house all these new up & coming criminals ! Case in point: Essays were due yesterday in my honors English class (9th grade). They could turn it in late today for a letter grade off, and after today they will receive a zero. I have 5 students who have not turned in a paper. One is already crying for extra credit. You wanna bet that the parents will send me an email, asking me if I can find it in my heart to let baby turn in the paper?
What would happen in the business world, or in a college English class? Which decision is more harmful to a student.. to let him get caught early for being a slacker and ruin his average this 9 weeks, or allowing him yet another chance to turn something in?

NetB, I’ll answer your easier question first about working on the curriculum. In 1983 Georgia passed QBE, the “Quality Basic Education” Act. QBE brought together teachers from around the state, really for the first time, to work on the curriculums for their own courses. What came from those meetings was a document called the QCC or Quality Core Curriculum. It was a set of “standards” that were developed for each course taught in the state of Georgia from Kindergarten through 12th grade. While it was a decent idea in principle it did not do so well in practice. Students were tested on this curriculum and did not do real well. Part of the reason for this was that tests did not really match the curriculum. There was no real accountability built in for schools or teachers and many experienced teachers just kept teaching what they had always taught rather than the new curriculum.
After a few short years, the assessment (CBA or Curriculum Based Assessment, I think it was called), was abandoned so that they could develop a new test. They came up with an early version of the test that we use now called the CRCT or Criterion Referenced Competency Test. We gave it for a couple of years and then it disappeared. It was revamped after the 2nd or 3rd revision of the QCC’s and we have been using it for several years now.
The recent news you have heard about Curriculum Revision came about as a result of an independent audit of the state curricula. The general consensus was that the QCC’s were “a mile wide and an inch deep”. Too much breadth and not enough depth. The NEW curriculum is supposed to have fixed these problems and should (with any luck) take us at least 15-20 years. It will be fully implemented over the next 2 years and we will begin to see the fruits of all that work I believe. The curriculum has been aligned through the new curriculum called GPS or Georgia Performance Standards and should flow seamlessly from K-12 in each subject area. It is more rigorous than the QCC’s and calls for understanding rather than rote memorization. Only time will tell, but I’m hopeful.
As for your main question about how to fix education, I’ll try to tackle that one later today.

I was an “80’s” high school kid, and I never would have dreamed of not turning in an assignment! Monica, I grew up in the same era and have the same thought. My parents would have given me the lecture about responsibility rather than contact a teacher to beg for an extension…any begging would have been my job.
Oh, but things are so incredibly different from back then. My senior year I contracted mono and was out of school for almost a month. I kept up on assignments through friends bringing me my homework and tutoring me as well as weekly calls to my teachers. My French teacher actually came to my house once a week for 2 hours to review assignments, answer questions, and administer quizzes.
I realize that there are numerous problems, but I ask about ONE because I make my teams go through this exercise when multiple problems are identified. We try to prioritize the problems and then focus on the top issue. One of the criteria for determining the first issue to be addressed is which is causing the MOST pain and will provide the most relief. The approach also keeps you from becoming overwhelmed by numbers of things to be fixed.
Chuck…thanks for the insight and info on the curriculum. It always pays to go to those in know for information.

This site is so pathetic. It shows just how little the AJC values it (being the ONLY blog so ruined with spam). It shows just how little spammers understand about women. No porn solicitations for women—no only for men—so what is the point of posting in a spot like this where not even the spam is designed for women? WtW has lost its vocal females for a handful of men who love bantering among themselves about what rights women should or should not have. It never changes.
So now for Friday, typical joke day I give this site as the biggest joke of a blog.

I do not knwo where you two women get off calling this a “woman’s site.” It is named such only because there are two women debating, not because it is designed for women.
This type of “what is yours is mine and what is mine is mine” mentality is exactly what screws you in every debate.
And just because you cannot hold your own when the guys have a decent debate is no reason to cry foul. You two just cannot keep from fullfilling the stereotype, huh?

Read a little before you open your mouths and make yourself sound so stupid.
These are BOTS that spam. They do not discern between blogs on what to advertise.
If you want more girly ads, become a better consumer of the cl&t pumps or such so your VERY tiny peniz can work, or learn how to use it (see latest article on how women have little understanding of their body before 50yo).

hey not so funny, actually YOU are wrong about it not being a “women’s site”. Why do I say this? Because the topics are usually what are considered “women’s issues”. Abortion, sexual harrassment, childrens issues (including this weeks topic, primary education), rape, gender discrimination, etc. Now, you can argue that these aren’t exclusively “womens” issues, but somehow anything to do with family somehow gets tranlated into “women’s” work.
And the women have virtually disappeared from this blog NOT because we can’t hold our own arguing with the men, but because we simply don’t like YOU, ya flea-bitten cur. Nor do we want to waste our breath arguing with an egotistical blow-hard…

Churches can now use an exciting alternative to the funds needed for their church.
It is a 24/7 fundraiser: a unique travel way
It is an opportunity for a church to own a travel website w/ travelocity as the search engine.
What a unique way to fundraise. One average, families spend $4000/yr for travel. If you are a church, why not utilize this way to fundraise.

Yeah? Well if you got 4 guys sitting in a bar and Bill Gates walks in, on average, each person in the bar will have a net worth in the MILLIONS!! So much for the “average”!
unless the “average” includes the costs to “travel” to and from work, guess I fall waaaaayyyyyy into the bottom percentile of the averaging. (sigh) Boy I need a vacation.

Recent Woman to Woman columns:
* Does desegregation violate a student's rights? * Should visual pro-life protests be handled differently from other forms of protest? * Is the trend of unmarried women positive or negative? * Should symbols of specific religions - such as the Christian cross - be displayed on public property? * Should felony charges for animal cruelty have the potential to imprison offenders for life?Looks like a 50/50 ratio at best to me.

Jack,
You have proved to have zero spine what-so-ever, so your opinion means squat. You remind me of the term “f@g-hag,” but pertaining to a guy who hangs out with and placates women since no guys respect him.
Just because your hen-pecked to hell does not mean you “know” women. It shows you know how to roll over little puppy.
Here is a scratch for the puppy: scratch, scratch, pat, pat
Now go eat your meat before having any pudding like your master wants.

Chuck is just typical of the “I’m holier than thou” southern neo-con christian. Lozen is a typical ivory tower intellect (along with BrianCurtis and NetBanker). A foetus is not a baby. Abortion is not murder. Can anyone show me where, even in the bible, it says abortion is murder? No, because it ain’t there. In the old testament Jehovah instructed his chosen people to murder and enslave other people (murder the men and boys and enslave the women and girls) over and over. How can you reconcile that with “Thou shalt not kill”?
Is it an abortion when soldiers, following the orders of their commander in chief, drop bombs on hundreds of pregnant women, born babies and born children in Iraq?
