Who is the most admirable woman of 2006?

Commentary
Smile. Be good. Forgive and forget.
Little girls grow up with this mantra even in the most democratic cultures. It’s an insidious form of social control, so prevalent that when the media focus heroic accolades on women, there is a good chance their good deeds are tied to their passivity. Heroines forgive their tormenters. They pray for them. They’re heavenly examples of femininity. It almost seems women are admired for being victims.
This is why Flora Jessop gets my nod for this year’s most admirable woman of 2006. To forgive may be divine, but some times you need to raise holy hell.
Flora Jessop was the victim of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS), a Colorado City religious cult known for trading underage girls to pederasts. Girls born into this polygamous cult often suffer sexual abuse from the hands of their immediate family; most are forced into marriage with much older men. During their lifetime of indoctrination, they’re told that they’re destined for Hell if they don’t “keep sweet”.
For FLDS escapee Laura Chapman, “keeping sweet meant being forced into marriage at age 18 to a man she didn’t know, let alone love,” reported a Denver Post article. “It meant having a baby every year. It meant walking 10 paces behind her husband. And, above all, it meant smiling, sweetly through her pain.”
Flora Jessop’s activism paved the way for women like Chapman to escape. It is a journey Jessop understands all too well, having herself ran away at fourteen, only to be handed back over to her abusers by government authorities. She managed to escape, again, at 16. And today she helps other girls escape similar fates.
“After my sister Ruby was returned to a man who brutally raped her,” Jessop told me in an interview, “I began fighting for children trapped by our broken child care system.”
Jessop’s activism led to the August 2006 arrest of Warren Jeffs, the cult’s mastermind pederast, who is reported to have had 70 wives, many of them underage girls.
“Each of us must walk through life alone,” says Jessop, “so I teach children to become their own heroes.”
Flora Jessop is mine.
You can read about her story at www.helpthechildbrides.com.
Rebuttal
My pick for the most admirable woman of 2006 could easily be one of the most admirable women in modern history, period. Everyone knows that Oprah Winfrey is a business powerhouse and hosts the most popular talk show in history. But perhaps her very success as a pop-culture icon has blinded the public to the incredible magnitude of her impact on those in need around the world.
Twenty years ago, a local Chicago talk show called The Oprah Winfrey Show launched into national syndication. Two years later Oprah bought it out, making her the first woman to own and produce her own talk show. Today, almost 50 million people watch the show weekly in the U.S. alone; with millions more in 122 other countries around the world.
In other words, Oprah talks directly to one in six Americans every week – more if you include her magazines and movies. But the story is not just her amazing reach: the story is what she does with it.
Better than almost anyone else in modern history, Oprah has leveraged her massive reach and multiplied her impact a hundredfold. And it would be a tremendous mistake for people to associate that high leverage primarily with creating best-sellers, or pop-culture trends. Instead, Oprah regularly gives a major donation to an under-served charitable cause … and is matched or exceeded by her viewers. If she gives a few million dollars to build homes for Katrina victims — using one recent example — the moment she does a show on the need, her viewers contribute five million to furnish the homes. Through enlisting her viewers, she has done everything from building schools for thousands of underprivileged children all over the world, to joining the battle against AIDS.
This billionaire head of a business empire started out as a child of poverty in Mississippi. And I admire that she uses her power to engage millions in not just learning about needs that would never otherwise see the light of day, but in actually meeting them. To the tune of – as far as I can tell from the sketchy information available – at least $100 million to date. Some may call Oprah frivolous; but one day, I hope she is recognized as the humanitarian powerhouse that she is.

I am certain the FLDS can quote tons of Scripture to justify their beliefs for marrying the young girls off and chasing all the young boys out of town, where they end up as street hustlers/prostitutes in Las Vagas(something the childbrides site seemed to not want to address, unless I did not look hard enough).
So that should make people wonder about the quoting scripture to justify what you want to justify concept.
Interestingly, I drove thru Colorado City once, returning from spending a week camping in the Kaibab National Forest, north of the Grand Canyon.
Hope we are all aware any comment posted today will get wiped out when they initiate posting over the weekend.

WHY PARENTS DRINK A boss wondered why one of his most valued employees had phoned in sick one day. Having an urgent problem with one of the main computers, he dialed the employee’s cell phone number and was greeted with a child’s whisper. “Hello.” “Is your daddy home?” he asked. “Yes,” whispered the small voice. “May I talk with him?” The child whispered, “No.” Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, “Is your mother there?” “Yes,” whispered the small voice. “May I talk with her?” Again the small voice whispered, “No.” Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, “Is anybody else there?” “Yes,” whispered the child, “a policeman” Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee’s home, the boss asked, “May I speak with the policeman?” “No, he’s busy”, whispered the child. “Busy doing what?” “Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the Fireman,” the whisper answered. Growing more worried as he heard what sounded like a helicopter through the ear piece on the phone, the boss asked, “What is that noise?” “A helicopter.” answered the whispering voice. “What is going on there?” demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive. Again, whispering, the child answered, “The search team just landed the helicopter.” Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked, “What are they searching for?” Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle. “ME.”

Shaunti—I came across “Oprah Winfrey” not knowing you were giving her an endorsement. Yeah, she does a lot of charity work, but she more than nullifies that good by promoting all the propaganda I alluded to, and her cult-like following is scary, downright scary. It’s not pleasant to know that that many women are brainwashed.

Gee Oprah as woman of the year. Now dont get me wrong—but I tend to live with the residue of Oprah. My sister is a fanatic Oprah watcher—to the point her TiVo is set to record just those shows and her O Magazine is earmarked, highlighted and discussed as gospel. AFTER the shows my sister is blessed with O wisdom meaning she becomes hypercritical with pop-physchoanalisis of me, her husband, children and pet. We dont live life the way Oprah says we should, we dont makeover, we dont wear the right bra, we dont eat the right foods, shop the right stores, wear the right colors, we dont live the O life.
My nomination is as always those nameless DFCS working women with their 123 caseloads who know the system is a failure and no one gives a damn until a ward of the state dies. After the clamor…they must work with the same unchanged system…

I nominate my Mother. No, she was not as famous as Oprah. No, she wasn’t a social activist. No, she wasn’t in the political arena. She was, without a doubt, the epitome of grace under pressure. She raised 3 children on her meager school teacher salary. She touched countless children’s lives through her stern, but loving teaching style. She showed her own children that nothing is worth having that you don’t work for. In her final days, with her own mortality staring her in the face, she kept a smile on it, lifting anyone up that came to visit and wish her well or tell her goodbye. She left, as her legacy, numerous children over her 32 year career, that can read and write. She left 3 children, that know what it means to truly love. Thank you Mom!!

I wonder if Shaunti truly believes that the hallmarks of commercial success—i.e., wealth and fame—are as inherently admirable as she claims with Oprah?
Certainly her charity work is admirable. But praising her ‘success story’ simply for the sheer amount of celebrity and personal fortune she’s gained? I wonder how she feels about other rich and famous folks, such as most of the A-list celebs in Hollywood?

Oprah for so many reasons you ARE the woman of the year ! You could easily sit back & enjoy the rest of your life in extreme luxury, but instead you work yourself to the bone & give back to the world. Your show helps everyone become more aware of what’s happening around us & you give a voice to those who have very little or none. There are SO MANY examples, here are a few:
It started as a wish for a first-class school that would nurture, educate, and turn gifted young South African girls from impoverished backgrounds into the country’s future leaders. Last summer it was time for Oprah to eagle-eye the final details, choose the uniforms and handpick the first 75 students. At 52, Oprah feels her most important work has just begun. The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls—South Africa is an innovative high school whose aim is to discover, teach and inspire young South African girls to become a new generation of leaders.
What Is ChristmasKindness?
Oprah’s mission—to give hope to children in South Africa. Her dream became 21 days, 50,000 children and a million moments of happiness. Orphanage Parties: In South Africa, held three ChristmasKindness parties for orphaned children from Soweto, Durban and Umtata. The miracle workers from HOPEworldwide and the God’s Golden Acre orphanage helped us gather some of the neediest children affected by AIDS—children with no food, no family, no home.
“It was a day of Christmas celebration that the children could always remember as happy. The children we were blessed to meet…and the people who care for them…changed our lives.” -Oprah
Building Oprah Katrina Homes: In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Oprah asked her viewers to open their hearts—and they did. As of September 2006, donations to the Oprah Angel Network Katrina registry total more than $11 million. Homes have been built in four states—Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama—before the one year anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, hundreds of thousands of children lost everything, including their precious books. In September 2005, following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and in conjunction with Oprah’s Book Club, with a selection of books by Mississippi native William Faulkner, Oprah’s Angel Network awarded First Book a $250,000 grant to distribute books to children in the Gulf Coast. The funds support First Book’s Book Relief program, with a goal of distributing more than 5 million new books to those impacted by the storms. Accomplishing this goal will take $2.5 million.
With the funds, First Book has been able to warehouse, conduct outreach for distribution, identify recipients, allocate and distribute 500,000 books in the Gulf Coast region.
What One Person—YOU—Can Do
“For as long as I have a voice in this world, my promise to children who have no voice is that they will be seen, they will be heard—because they matter. The ChristmasKindness project was created and financed through my private foundation, The Oprah Winfrey Foundation. Now, through our Angel Network which is my public charity—your charity—you also have the opportunity to contribute to our mission to support, educate and uplift children whose lives are devastated by AIDS. It is my promise to you that your money will be spent to make a difference in a life that needs it.” — Oprah

Tied for Woman of the Year ! Angelina Jolie ! ! !
“It was very clear to me there was a lot about this world that I didn’t know. I felt really ashamed and ignorant… . It just changed my life.” -Angelina Jolie
A course that would take her to the far and forgotten corners of the globe where her star power would shine and attract attention to millions of refugees and the vast injustices being heaped upon them.
Angelina quickly contacted the United Nations to ask what she could do to help. The U. N. soon announced that they were naming Angelina a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. Since then she has worked at a whirlwind pace. In her tenure as ambassador she has toured UNHCR refugee operations in the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, Cambodia, Thailand, and Pakistan and Ecuador. Due to the fact that the press clamors to follow her wherever she goes, she has helped turn attention to the horrendous living conditions of the nearly 35 million refugees there, half of which are children. Angelina has also been a champion of the cause to rid the world of the menace of land mines. On a recent trip she was even able to personally detonate a land mine that was placed near a place where many children play. Angelina was first made aware of the problem of land mines while filming a movie in Cambodia. She says she was shocked to see so many people with missing limbs due to land mines and so she set out to do something. Following in the footsteps of Princess Diana, Angelina has been a figure head and has garnered much attention for many different organizations such as the Adopt a Minefield organization and International Campaign to Ban Land Mines. And not only has Angelina donated her time to these causes, but she has also donated several million dollars to many different causes. She is truly a celebrity that is to be looked up to and emulated. Thank you Angelina Jolie!

I can’t say anything about Flora Jessop, because I’m not familiar with who she is or what she has done, but I’ll say this about Oprah, while she does alot, I sometimes have to wonder who she is really doing it for … sometimes I think herself, because let’s face it the woman just loves, loves, loves herself, is her own biggest cheerleader and clearly thinks she is god’s gift to the universe (which she may be, but I’d like her much more if she didn’t think this about herself).

Actually, iloveoprah, I do think that (and know alot of others who do as well). Don’t get me wrong, I think its great that she does the things she does, but it drives me crazy that she is always patting herself on the back and telling the rest of us how great she is (even if it is subtle sometimes, she still does it). IMO, an honest do gooder would not do that (nor would they feel the need to do that).

The need to constantly pat yourself on the back to promote your own greatness is a sign of generally low self-esteem. Why, we have a perfect example right here on this blog. Oh, never mind, retract that.
but what always amazes me, in say Oprah’s case, she is great, but still needs to do that (if she were a guy) chest-thumpin’. makes ya wonder…LOL

I love to see a woman getting excited about what she’s doing or what she’s accomplished & NEVER have I seen it as “she just thinks she’s all that” or “she think she’s god & above everyone else”. A woman with confidence is seen as that by a lot of people, I’m not blind to that. Me personally love to see an enthusiastic person. When Oprah gets excited on her show it also brings the energy up in the crowd & for the people watching at home. Who wants to see a talk show host being a meek quiet mouse?

I agree with Iloveoprah. Rosie called Donald Trump exactly what he is and he couldn’t take it. Donald is the biggest sleeze out there who proved it by using the only come-back he could think of: “ohhhh….welll……ok Rosie is fat & ugly !…uhhh…she’s a loser & fat !…..”
Only disgusting people put women down by calling them whores, fat, or full of themselves. Donald Trump needs to be banned from marrying anybody & needs a vasectomy. All he does is breed then move to the next woman. He’s probably slept around so much he’s a walking disease.

For any of those ladies who think that their husband will “take care of everything”…
“Ellen Tucker Emerson cut short her nursing career to help raise her children, but money was never a worry. Her husband made a good living as a lawyer, and the family didn’t miss her income….
Then the marriage fell apart. Now 51, Tucker Emerson scrambles to pay the bills and wonders how she will get by in retirement….
Like millions of other upwardly mobile women of the baby boom generation, Tucker Emerson faces the danger that retirement will bring a sharp downhill slide in lifestyle. Many of these women could suffer a greater decline in living standards in later life than their mothers did.”

Oprah has to tell you what she does for the community because if she did not many in the black community would be so quick to say she’s not doing anything. If you say Oprah pats herself on the back, I say so what because there is a difference with what she’s expected to do than say a Trump or Gates. There are some that still criticize Oprah for what she doesn’t do. Some people have this savior-mentality and anyone with money and power is supposed to solve the world’s problems but of course it doesn’t work that way. I do understand that not everyone likes Oprah but some of the dislike is based on jealousy and nothing more. There is no perfect person so just get over it. As for Rosie and Trump I side with Trump because although Trump is an adulterer, he didn’t attack Rosie’s issues until he was attacked. Oddly I agree with Rosie that the Trump should not have pardoned the Miss America but my dislike of Trump’s decision does not mean I need to make disparaging remarks about the man.

He’s always done that, buys the affections of really young women & that is something to be critisized for. I watched Rosie talk about D. Trump & it was so funny! All she was saying was the truth. Is that true about D Trump being bankrupt at least twice? What happened to all the people he owed money to? It really bothered me too that all Donald could say about Rosie was she was fat & ugly. Just because someone isn’t beautiful does not mean they can’t have an opinion or if they speak out what they say doesn’t mean anything because they aren’t beauty queen-like. Most of us aren’t lol.

I’ll say this much, I was very surprised that Donald Trump allowed Miss. USA to keep her crown. I thought for sure that he would fire her. However, all that said, it should be noted that it was his decision to make as co-owner (with NBC who I’m assuming agreed with his call since nothing has been said by them in regards to it) of the Miss. Universe Organization (which owns the Miss. USA pageant) and if that is was the decision he made, then that was the decision he made then I say cest la vie (that’s life).

I DO take offense, however, at the so called “news media” bludgeoning us over the head with the “feud.” These whores should be reporting NEWS. For example, what is the government doing with our money, in our name? That’s something we need to know, but can scarcely find any reports on, because we’re so busy getting worthless gossip shoveled up our a— by a bunch of whores telling us it’s news. GET A GRIP!

We discovered her show recently & can’t wait to see more. -i think we’re watching re-runs right now. Everybody should watch at least one comedy a night. As far as Paris, Nichole & that whole group, I don’t think those girls are any different than another other young person who is doing the club scene. The press loves to create that sort of silliness & making them sound like they are a lot wilder than any other normal young person at that age. In a few years most of them will grow out of that stage & a new group of crazy young people will be in their place. Isn’t that how it’s always been? Of course it’s always the girls that are disgusting human beings for having too much fun, never the guys.

Those young people aren’t doing anything wrong. The sleeze magazines twist stories & take photos to suit whatever lies they are trying to tell. All to sell silly magazines that a lot of you people buy. Whoever buys the tabloids are the ones supporting such idiocy.

Jane Hodgson, MD, a longtime crusader for abortion rights, She was motivated to break the law by performing an abortion after treating countless women injured and suffering from unsafe, back-alley abortions. Dr. Hodgson remained a lifelong champion for women’s reproductive rights, traveling from her home in St, Paul, Minnesota 150 miles away to Duluth to perform abortions in her eighties. “She was a unique crusader who risked her life for the cause of women’s reproductive rights,” said Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation. “Even when she was targeted by the anti-abortion movement, she never let up. She even spent her vacations volunteering in developing countries where abortion is illegal.”

Called “the undercover activist” Sandra Bullock
After September 11, 2001, she wrote a million-dollar check to the American Red Cross to help victims of the terrorist attacks, and she wrote another million-dollar check to the Red Cross to help relief efforts in Asian countries affected by the 2004 tsunami. In the days after Hurricane Katrina, she was often seen at the Austin convention center, helping evacuees get food, clothing and shelter. And most recently, Bullock has been a financial force behind the creation of the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders in Austin (named after former Texas governor Ann Richards, who died of esophageal cancer in September; it’s set to open in 2007) and the rebuilding of the Warren Easton Senior High School in New Orleans’ inner city. One of her new mantras, she says, is GET EDUCATED—the slogan on her new favorite T-shirt.
