Should repeat sexual offenders be penalized more for preying on children than adult women?

Commentary
With high recidivism rates among child sexual predators, it isn’t surprising election-year hopefuls are leveraging our collective disgust with campaign-season solutions. But the current trend to pass harsher penalties for child sexual assault only fosters prevailing notions that women are complicit in sex crimes against them.
Yes, children are scarred by sexual abuse. But so are women. Studies show that the psychological effects of raping an adult woman can be more psychologically damaging to its victim than to a victim of child sexual assault. This is especially true when comparing the psychological effects of victims under the age of six, who have little understanding of what is happening to them, according to a study review in “Sex Abuse: A Journal of Research and Treatment.”
Yes, children are more innocent than women. But that’s because women walk around in fear, regardless of whether or not they’ve been sexually assaulted. “More than two-thirds of women report that they have avoided doing necessary activities because of fear of victimization,” according to “The Fear of Rape: A Study in Social Control,” published in the Journal of Social Issues.
Yes, children are defenseless. But so is your average female fighting off a 200-pound male. Yet, the general public is far more willing to believe women are somehow responsible for sex crimes committed against them. Adult female victims know this: Studies show that sexually-assaulted women with visible wounds, short of a brutal beating, heal psychologically faster than those with none. The thinking goes something like this: Bruises show a lack of consent, which result in less victim-blaming, which results in a quicker recovery period.
And, yes, there are huge differences in the degree and duration of an assault that make conclusions about age and trauma suspect. This is exactly the reason we shouldn’t legalize distinctions by passing harsher penalties for repeat offenders of child sexual assaults and not serial rapists. Because regardless of age, sexual assault victims suffer similar trauma: higher rates of depression, suicidal ideation, nightmares, sexual dysfunction, low self-esteem and a myriad of psychological disorders.
The biggest difference between the sexual assault of a child and an adult woman is not the degree of trauma experienced by the victims, but the degree of trauma inflicted by our own bias.
Rebuttal
Any sexual abuse is a serious crime that is devastating to the victim. But the revelation by disgraced congressman Mark Foley that he himself was molested as a boy illustrates why pedophilia is more serious than adult assault: it skews a child’s entire emotional development – and is tragically likely to be self-perpetuating. All too often, abused children act out inappropriately in a way that traumatizes other children — or even grow up with the sort of messed-up desires that lead to abusing others. In the scholarly book Psychiatric Aspects of Violence, Dr. Sandra Bloom notes that almost a third of men who were abused as a child end up violently victimizing others.
The research does show that childhood violations may or may not have the immediate, visible post-traumatic stress disorder-type effects of adult rape. But as serious as those adult traumas are, most adult victims are able to work through them. For example, acclaimed trauma researcher Dr. Patricia Resick noted in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence that studies of adult rape victims show “an overall pattern” where “most victims experience a strong acute reaction that lasts for several months. By three months postcrime, much of the initial turmoil has decreased and stabilized.” She notes that only a subset of victims “continue to experience chronic problems.”
By contrast, an explosion of recent research shows that childhood sexual abuse is like a deadly seed that germinates in secret, growing through the years and entwining its toxic tendrils through dozens of developmental areas. And because researchers estimate that childhood abuse is usually from someone the child knows and trusts and goes on for years (on average, for more than 7 years, according to Bloom), its psychological and emotional effects are usually that much more devastating and complicated.
I have several close friends who were sexually abused as kids — and decades later nearly all of them are still suffering the consequences in their day-to-day lives and marriages. Although I don’t know whether I agree with some states (such as Oklahoma) imposing the death penalty on repeat pedophiles, I understand the justification. Because unlike most adult rape, childhood assault often does steal away the life that the child should have had.

Why does it matter if the victim is a man, a woman or a child? All sex offenders should receive severe punishment and the repeaters should receive exponentially more severe punishment. Period.
That being said, we should also be asking other questions like:

2D: Haven’t you heard? Any attempt to understand the cause of criminal behavior is exactly the same as excusing it and “siding with the criminal against the victims.” Talk of rehabilitation just gets in the way of righteous fury and elaborate revenge/mutilation fantasies. What are you, some kinda pinko?

In the most general sense, legal “punishment” of criminals serves two very different purposes for two different “groups“ of people: (1) For society as a whole, it is important to “punish” criminals for reasons of public safety, that is in order to prevent both that particular criminal AND others who may think similarly from repeating that same type of crime. This is known as CRIMINAL PROSECUTION, in which the plaintiff is the State, i.e. the representative body for all citizens. (2) For the individual victims of particular crimes, it is important for those persons to have the right to be compensated for INDIVIDUAL DAMAGES they sustained as a result of the crimes committed against them. This is known as CIVIL PROSECUTION, in which the plaintiffs are individuals.
Many people were confused about this point following the O J Simpson trials when the family of Ron Goldman won a civil case against O J in 1997 after O J was acquitted of the criminal charges for the SAME CRIME in 1995. Because the penalty for criminal charges is often loss of freedom, and sometimes even life itself, the standard for criminal prosecution remains very high (beyond a reasonable doubt) versus the standard for civil prosecution (preponderance of evidence), in which the judgment can only be monetary. As such, different verdicts may result following the two different trials. Contrary to many individuals’ claims, this is NOT double-jeopardy, i.e. trying a man twice for the same crime. In each case, the PLAINTIFFS are DIFFERENT, and are thus TWO SEPARATE CASES, albeit generated by the SAME CRIME.

Can these people be rehabilitated or do they need to be removed from society?
My vote would be for them to be moved from society. There have been studies conducted with sex offenders to gauge the effects of rehabilitation — but the majority of offenders have either said or demonostrated that rehabilitaion of one’s sexual inclination is harder to do than first imagined.

A clear answer to this week’s question can only be found by separating the criminal prosecution from the civil. On the criminal side, ALL violent criminals, especially sexually violent criminals, should be incarcerated for long periods of time or killed (OR offered either castration or banishment to a dental floss farm in Montana with no way back to society. Forget feeding and housing them on MY DIME. Right, Jack?). With the recidivism rates what they are, rehabilitation doesn’t seem to be a reasonable option.
While the potential civil damages to the victims should be strongly considered during criminal sentencing, in the end they are IRRELEVANT TO FULFILLING THE PURPOSE OF THIS SENTENCING, WHICH IS TO PROTECT SOCIETY FROM FUTURE ATTACKS. As such, focusing on WHICH CATEGORY OF VICTIM IS MORE HARMED IS IDIOTIC IN TRYING TO DETERMINE THE APPROPRIATE SENTENCE FOR SUCH CRIMINALS. If this point was understood by more judges, THERE WOULD BE FEW REPEAT OFFENDERS ROAMING AROUND IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Yea BC let’s not punish them. Let’s study them. Then we can release them so they can do it again. We can then figure out why they are repeat offenders. Is that your take? If someone brutally raped someone you love you want to STUDY THEM? Give me a break. They should be castrated with a rusty hacksaw.

What matter if the victim be male, woman, child or sheep? Jail and rehab do nothing but the solution should be 100% castration. With such a penalty after conviction there would be fewer crimes of this violence. The sticky point is what to do with so many castrati after punishment now that opera is loosing its audience…

In terms of the number of civil charges filed following sexual assault, very few are ever filed. The reason for this is that the damage done to most victims is not monetary, and usually not even physical in any permanent way, so much as it is spiritual in nature. So, how could, or why should a victim of sexual assault sue for civil damages? For some victims it helps the healing process, but for most, this extra step for “revenge” is too painful to be worth it. That’s why GOD (via the State) tells victims, “Let vengeance be mine”. The fastest path to healing for most victims is to simply accept that part of the deal without getting their own hands dirty through vengeful acts, or even worse by driving themselves crazy thinking about it.
The most important answers, that is how to help victims of violent crime to heal and perhaps more importantly, how to prevent the crime in the first place, can not be found in the realm of manly laws, but can only be found in the realm of GOD‘S LOVE. For an important clue about this whole process, we don’t have to look much further than the Amish people who went to the funeral of the killer of the five little girls last week. I’ve known many Mennonite people in my lifetime, and they are the real deal, folks, this was no media stunt.

Would these new laws affect the many Mexican men who are in my county’s violator website for statutory rape? You know, in Mexico it’s okay for 25 year old men to have sex with 14-year olds, the way I understand it. And can you blame them for continuing over here? If you woke up in certain parts of Gainesville, you’d be wondering how in the heck you got to Mexico. If you think I’m exaggerating about either, look at the website and take a tour of south Gainesville.

Here’s a little piece straight from the Mennonite website:
Sin is turning away from God and making gods of creation and of ourselves. We sin by making individual and group choices to do unrighteousness and injustice. [2] We sin by omitting to do good and neglecting to give God the glory due our Creator and Redeemer. In sinning, we become unfaithful to the covenant with God and with God’s people, destroy right relationships, use power selfishly, do violence, and become separated from God. As a result, we are not able to worship God rightly. [3]

But remember, GOD is not SOME MAN IN SPACE. That is the ridiculous man-made concept sold in churches. Again, straight from the Mennonite website:
God both surpasses human understanding and is truly knowable through revelation. Our knowledge of God rests in this tension. Further, God’s characteristics (or “attributes”) sometimes appear contradictory to us. For example, how can God be both just and merciful, characteristics which in human experience often seem opposed? Yet we confess that in the divine being these attributes are perfectly united. Finally, according to Scripture, the love of God has a certain priority in relation to other divine attributes. The article reflects this emphasis by such phrases as “righteous love” rather than by playing “righteousness” off against “love” or by focusing on one without the other.

I thought about this topic. A sexual predator, no matter who they are preying on, should be dealt with swiftly and to the maximum penalty. However, personally, I do think a crime against a child is the worst. Whoever is that sick to harm an innocent child, should be castrated, in my perfect world.

With prisons being as open-door as America’s borders the violence inside these jails increases as does the bad influence of criminals who get off easy, or spend 7 years because of overcrowding instead of what they were sentenced to: LIFE. Castration would change the current gang+thug jail-worshiping culture ruining this country. It would end violence of repeat offenders, stem the increase in child pornography and is 100% effective against gang members. Any prisoner convicted of a life sentence for a violent crime which includes rape, murder or pedophiliacs should be castrated before entering the prison system and then, and only then, would they leave prison: rehabilitated.

Who are you and how can you possibly say something as inane as that? If there are some women out there who has a sexual fantasy of rape, it is with their PARTNER, not some nameless, unwashed baboon. Also, have you ever actually READ those romance novels you are citing? These novels deal with capture yes, but the woman is coerced into a sexual liaison with the male not FORCED. Big difference. BDSM usually takes place between two CONSENTING ADULTS; in a controlled environment — because both partners enjoy it not just one.
Please look again at the capitalized words: Partner, Read, Forced, Consenting Adults. Maybe these words will ring a bell.

Can we refer to the product of child-hood sexual abuse as Survivors, not the condescending victims?
Much as I lean Diane’s way most of the time, I could not be more solidly on Shaunti’s side on this. Nowehere does Diane mention emotional development of children, versus adult. And yes, we definitely DO have a bias, for children. Survivors of child-hood sexual abuse are scarred for life. period.
The escort girl I mentioned last week, former neighbor of a buddy, was the product of it. She and at least 7 of her sisters. Their dad, the perpetrator, got 40 years in the state pen, essentially a life sentence. I met two of her sisters, both incapable of anything that would vaguely resemble a real, healthy relationship. I learned all this from my buddy, not the women who were visiting for merely non-sexual socializing. Hardly my only experience with Survivors, but the other details I need not go into here.
Since it is rather easy to be wrongfully convicted of sexual-crimes, I ver away from the death-sentence, but 3-strikes you are incarcerated for life works well for me.

Ask yourself how rare these cases are! Yes, even DeKalb locked someone up 14 years but it was because there was no DNA evidence/tests made at the time of the incarceration. Ask yourself today how many freed criminals get out before their time and re-commit crimes, often the same type of crimes and frequently the same victim? The risks of releasing criminals into our society compensates for the guilty before proven innocent! I am not saying death penalty. You can live and function in society castrated and also with current trend of lawyers seeking awards/judgement payments as compensation for serving prison—why the moral guilt?

So we’re all just accepting the idea that sexual offenders will have the chance to repeat? If our justice system worked for women and children there would be no repeat sexual offenders. These men should be sentenced to years in prison for the first offense and never have a chance to repeat! Our justice system punishes a man who is caught with an ounce of cocaine or a man who robs a gas station with more jail time than a man who rapes a woman or a child.

You can live and function in society castrated and also with current trend of lawyers seeking awards/judgement payments as compensation for serving prison—why the moral guilt?
No guilt, just asking a question. To say that mistakes don’t happen, would be insincere. To say people don’t get set up for crimes, or are wrongfully accused would be illogical — especially judging from the Olympic Park Bombings and the Tulia’s black residents scandal of 2000, (Tulia, TX).

“More than two-thirds of women report that they have avoided doing necessary activities because of fear of victimization,” according to “The Fear of Rape: A Study in Social Control,” published in the Journal of Social Issues.
Women do live with this fear all the time.
So, my answer to the question is NO. Someone who rapes a woman should be in jail for a long, long time. Someone who rapes a child should be in jail for a long, long time! The real problem is, in both cases he won’t get much time and will soon be back on the street to rape women and children again.

Wow, rape is that often in the United States? Every 1.3 women raped every minute.
But when you think about it, the United States enjoys violence and violent acts. Look at the movies, the news, our entertainment. I love football, but it is a violent sport. Look at how many players get injured from being knocked down by a 250 lb guy. Or boxing. Taking shots to the head like that isn’t that good.

If you dont want the time dont do the crime. I fail to see why I would not be impartial on a jury after all we are innocent until proven guilty—except by the press—Remember Jewell, AJC? The cost of keeping prisoners locked up for life equals per year what an average middle class tax-payer makes yearly (50,000). The the worst offenders are violent criminals incarcerated in a place where violent & sexual acts repeatedly occur to the inmates thus more money is spent to guard them than the average criminals up for a 3d strike DUI. The argument someone with cocaine doing the same time as someone who committed rape is part of the problem with the current system that rewards repeat offenders with probation after a minimum sentence is done NOT in hope of rehabilitation but because of the cost! There has been no increase of funding to rehabilitation services or to hire more probation officers. Building more jails will not end the problem but castration would certainly keep offenders from becoming glorified by their peers, AND would lower violence occurring in-prison. Also moving sex offenders from living near bus stops, or moving them to Montana, would not work! First, why the hell should the residents of Montana bear the cost of other state’s criminals unless they are amply rewarded for such inconvenience? I doubt all the Montana dental floss tycoons would be appreciative to such legislation. Second, most violence against children occurs by another family member. For example all the children could be moved to different stops but if the sex-perp is the principal of the school/minister/rabbi what is a parent to do? If you cant make your neighborhood safe from criminals—debilitate the criminal! Love means never having to watching the criminal who raped/abused/killed your husband/wife/sister/son/child being released. Quote John Lennon: Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.

The sexual assault stats of 1 in 3 should not be considered direct rape. If a male were to rub his erection against the butt of a woman on the subway, it would be considered a sexual assault, even though no actual rape occurred.

Should repeat drunk drivers be given more jail time for killing a man than killing a woman?
No, because in that situation, women and men are equally vulnerable to the potential for becoming the victims of drunken drivers.
Should repeat robbers be given more jail time for robbing a business owned by a woman than for robbing a business owned by a man?
No, because in that situation, women and men are equally vulnerable to the potential for becoming the victims of robbery.
Should repeat sexual offenders be penalized more for preying on children than adult women?
I agree with all who said that sexual offenders shouldn’t even be in a position where they can “repeat” their crimes. However, in the event that they do repeat their sexual offense, yes, they should be penalized more for preying on children than adults because in this situation, the children are more vulnerable than adults are. Children have virtually no defense.
I don’t know the stats, but I’m willing to bet dollars to donuts that the percentage of women who escape an attempted sexual assault is way higher than that of children who do. Women are stronger, smarter, more knowledgeable, more experienced, and less trusting than children are, and therefore stand more of a chance of escape. Children are easy prey, and anyone who goes near a child with the intention of causing harm should be punished severely.

But remember, folks: It’s important to never try to find out why rapes happen. EVER. We must NEVER learn anything about the underlying causes, because (in the right-wing mind) that would be the same as turning them loose without punishment and excusing their actions.
Remember that. Ignorance is important, people! Any attempt to figure out reasons and causes is sympathizing with rapists.

Rape is a crime of violence. Rapes happen because a person has a sexual fantasy or prediliction of violently assaulting someone else.
We have been studying rapists, serial killers, etc. for years and I think the basics of the act are the same. The only thing that changes are the motives for each particular instance.

Rape is also a violence against women thing, so castration would merely allow that rage to be directed in other ways, potentially much more violently. Often, many rapes have very little to do with the actual sex act, however, the rage against women is manifested that way.

Diane is all wet on this one and for once I agree with Shaunti. JBM makes a great argument about children being less likely to fight off an abuser than a grown woman. Diane’s statement about children under six not knowing what happens is bull. They may not understand but that doesn’t mean they aren’t damaged by it. This whole repressed memory idea has been presented out of proportion but I believe it can happen. An adult has sexual issues then realizes s/he was abused as a very young child. An abused child, as Shaunti says, very often abuses when s/he is an adult. A raped woman is not likely to become a rapist. A victim/survivor is traumatized regardless of age or gender, but a perpetrator of childhood abuse or incest is more insidious to my mind. Also, rape is a violent sexual act, but child rape, while violent, has more of a sexual/control component.

Well I have just seen the most inane comment to date from Diane:
But the current trend to pass harsher penalties for child sexual assault only fosters prevailing notions that women are complicit in sex crimes against them.

Find an island out in the middle of the ocean, drop them off, give them provisions each month and patrol to ensure none of them escape. That cleans the streets, eliminates the need for a death penalty, frees up local jail space and would probably reduce the cost of incarceration. Just an idea.

Hate crime laws aren’t about who is the victim, but the reason for the assault. Example: a white person attacks a black person for no reason and is charged with assault. A white person attacks a black person while yelling racial insults and is charged with a hate crime. The special classification of hate crimes singles out crimes committed because of hatred of what the victim represents.

Hate crime legislation isn’t about who you committed a crime against, it’s about why you committed the crime. So, beating up a man with a broken beer bottle isn’t worse if that man is Middle Eastern; it’s worse if you beat him up because he’s Middle Eastern.

Because women (instead of doing violence against an unknown opponent) commit violence against their children or themselves. Self-abuse is a more common a reaction in women who have been victims of violence than men.
So theoretically, between Kimberly, Mara, Susie, Lozen, Renee, Betty, and I, at least two of us have been or will be sexually assaulted in our lifetime.

Lozen, we were ONCE a much more moral country than we are now. 40 years of the “anything goes” liberal control finished off any semblance of that “Not perfect, but so much better” time. Republicans have tried for some time to try to get back some of the sanity of those times. 3 strikes laws, anti-pornography laws etc., but we’ve gone if not past the tipping point, right up to it. Now we’ve got Republicans doing what used to be more in the realm of the dems…sexual predators. What the heck is the world coming to?
In the 60’s we used to put rapists to death or give them life in prison. Now it’s just a slap on the wrist. That’s what the “sexual revolution” got us. The 60’s brought on the “if it feels good do it” attitude. Some people, men and women, have taken that to mean that they can do anything they want to do. We’ve got to get back some of the equilibrium in this area or we are going to have really serious problems.

Part of the problem with the 3 strikes law is that drug offenders are locked away and sexual predators are being let out. It is a travesty that prisons are full of drug users. Violent criminals are the ones that should be incarcerated for the protection of society. I know that drug offenders may commit violent crimes, but I’m talking about conviction just for drug law violations.

I started screaming and it worked…. scared him enough that he took me home. That was a year before my employer lured me to his office on the pretext of helping work out a problem and grabbed me. And when I told my mother she said, “What did you do that made him think he could do that?” I remember wondering why she would not confront him and tell him to leave me alone but instead blame me! What a blow. I never forgave her for that. That was many years before another employer, old enough to be my grandfather, tried to fondle me in his office when I was crying and upset about my divorce.

Lozen, we were ONCE a much more moral country than we are now. Yeah, yeah, yeah! Exactly when was that Chuck? The things that happened to me as a teen happened in the 50’s! The only difference between then and now is that now women are free to engage in consensual sex without being married, getting pregnant, etc. I do not remember rapists ever being put to death or getting life in prison. How old are you anyway that you believe in that, “America waa a moral country back in the good ole days?” Laws in this country were never written by or for females or children!

chuck - were we a more “moral” country 40 years ago, or was it merely not talked about in “polite” company? Just as the “good ol’ days” weren’t really as cotton-candy sweet as they’re usually portrayed, I have to say that just because things like domestic violence of all types, incest, prostitution, alchoholism, drug abuse, abortion, infidelity, pederasty, child rape, and homosexuality weren’t talked about or acknowleged doesn’t mean that they didn’t exist, you know.
And I’d really be interested in what studies support your claim that Democrats are, historically, the party of pedophilia and rape. Really, I would.

Chuck…
Three strikes laws have nothing to do with an “anything goes” or a “if it feels good do it” attitude. It has more to do with the notion that people can make mistakes, learn from them and not do them again. Now, whether or not that model works with sexual predators is a whole different topic.
If you want to reason particular outcomes with the previously mentioned attitudes, you can list things like abortion on demand, the rise in “domestic partners” whether or not they are same sex relationships, children born out of wedlock, the increase and prevelence in STDs, increase in corporate greed and the widening gap of rich and poor.
The list goes on beyond what I can state but I am sure others can add to it.

Lozen, Mara, we were a more moral country. I did not say that those things didn’t happen, but I gaurantee you they didn’t happen with the frequency that they happen today. In addition while many of these events were not “reported” in those days, there were other ways of dealing with people who crossed that line than just the courts. My Dad told me about his sister coming home upset from a date one night as a seventeen year old. Her date had touched her inappropriately. She had put a stop to it, but my Dad and his 5 brothers made sure that guy didn’t cross the line again. No they didn’t kill him, they just taught him some manners.
That was back when people understood that there were consequences for poor behavior.
2D, 3 strikes comes EXACTLY from that attitude of the 60’s of anything goes. While the dems were in control, beginning with FDR and stretching though Clinton, Liberal judges across the country began saying, “It’s just sex.” They stopped giving out harsh sentences to these violent criminals. 3 strikes takes it out of the hands of those judges by requiring a life without parole sentence for 3 time felons. I personally think it ought to be 2 strikes like it is in some states.
As for your list, all of those things came out of those attitudes as well. We have devalued life to that point. Nothing shocks us anymore. There is no shame anymore. I’m worried about where this can take us as a nation.
BTW, I think we ought to hold our elected leaders to a MUCH HIGHER standard. I’m glad the Republicans ousted Foley immediately after these things came to light. They probably should have done it earlier, but at least it wasn’t as bad as the dems when they kept Studs in office for 10 years after he had sex with a minor. They would not even allow him to be censured. I think that is a basic difference between the 2 parties. The dems look for a way to excuse the behavior of THEIR elected officials while the reps. USUALLY do the right thing. For example Bob Livingston had an affair with an ADULT. He resigned from office and tried to make things right with his wife. Newt resigned also after his divorce. He knew he could not lead the house as a philanderer. I think that’s a good thing.

I wonder if we’re comparing apples and oranges here. Perhaps sexual abuse toward adult women has little relation to sexual abuse of children. I’ve often heard it said that “rape is a crime of violence,” yet child molestation seems inextricably linked to sexual attraction to children. That doesn’t match.
And if they have two different underlying causes, should they be addressed separately, rather than lumped together? The outcomes may be the same, but the causes (and therefore, appropriate responses) may be very different.

Chuck… How can three strikes come from an attitude of “anything goes”?
Three strikes implies that the action is wrong (the level of “wrongness” can be debated) and that subsequent instances of the action requires increased punishment levels up to the third and final instance which would carry the ultimate penalty. The attitude of “anything goes” implies the action is not wrong and would therefore not require a punishment.
How can you apply three strike mentality to an action deemed not worthy of punishment?

Betty — Self-abuse is a more common a reaction in women who have been victims of violence than men.
So true. I was once stupid enough to think I could be a social worker, like my godmother, but before I committed 4 years in the pursuit of that profession she, (godmother), got me a job in a women’s half-way house.
The majority of the women there had some sort of history of sexual abuse as a child. All of them were trying to reintegrate into society from prison/jail and most of them went right back to drugs, prostitution to buy drugs, manipulative abusive men who used them to prostitue to give them money and buy themselves drugs, etc. And no matter what type of counseling they received, if there were 10 women in the room, 7 of them was lost on the merry go round of self destruction.

I don’t know the exact statistics, but I believe a very high percentage af abusers were abused themselves, often severely. We don’t need any more “studies” to figure this out. The purpose of criminal prosecution is to PROTECT THE PUBLIC FROM FURTHER HARM. UNDERSTANDING THE CRIMINAL’S MOTIVATIONS IS SECONDARY TO PROTECTING THE PUBLIC.

Another point: If rape of adults is truly an act of violence, rather than sex, why are the male/female numbers so skewed? While overall domestic violence rates are much closer to evenly distributed, sexual abuse numbers are almost 90% male (as perpetrator).
This doesn’t jibe with the notion that adult rape is a purely violence-driven act. If it were, then a larger percentage of perpetrators would be women, as they are in child-abuse cases.

Chuck, how much I agree with you! America had decency and pride not just in its country but also in its moral values! There was no vague area concerning criminal behavior. We were raised in families where there was morality, our parents were strict with rules, curfews and more than anything we as a family did things together AS a family. My mother enjoyed and honored her role as mother just as much as my father enjoyed his parental responsibility—no embellishments needed. We had our close neighborhood of friends, our church and followed passed-down traditions of living an honorable life. The splintering of the American family was caused more by people trying to have popular sex than any other breakdown or cause. The 70s wave of liberations brought waves of anti-cultural changes that morally decayed not just the American traditions but the family unit. The 80s brought sexual corruption unprecedented by its vulgarity and further withering the family and morals by artists like Maplethorpe/Madonna brought sleaze and sexual degeneracy into popularity compounded with a President and first lady who had zero morals except to entrench their own wealth and popularity. The 90s brought the rising surge of thug and prison culture that came out of slums, broken homes and gangs who believe incarceration is the step to becoming a man. The subcultures of both homosexuality and violence slid this once proud nation into the sewer! Promiscuity is socially acceptable for adolescents and pity the children who must grow accepting homosexuals and pedophiles or sex addicts as neighbors! No matter how much Americans pretend we are safe, men like Fowley can reach our sons, men like Clinton reach our daughters as they serve as pages in Washington, members of clergy have been charged with preying on children leaving no safe place for them who need it most. Stand strong in faith against this tide of popular corruption knowing you are not the only one in the storm. God’s wisdom is our guide and light in the darkness.

Betty - The 80s brought…a President and first lady who had zero morals except to entrench their own wealth and popularity
which ‘80’s president and first lady are you refering to, Blessed Saint Ronnie and wife Nancy or the Most Holy George H. W. Bush and Babs?
Now I agree with you regardless of which pair you’re refering to, but I have to say, I’m quite surprised that someone who holds such obviously conservative views would break Saint Ronnie’s 11th Commandment and speak ill of a fellow Republican.
I’d also like to point out that the rebels who launched the sexual revolution were raised by those very same oh-so-moral (though fictional) Ward-and-June wannabe’s that you are so starry-eyed over. If they were the moral paragons you make them out to be, how in the world did they screw up so badly as parents?
IMO it was the advent of the birth-control pill which changed society. It had nothing to do with ones politics. Conservative 8or* liberal, once women realized that they didn’t have to choose between celibacy and motherhood, that they were finally, truly, free to do as they pleased…well, evidently sex pleases us a whole lot. Many men seem to still be confused about where that leaves them. They who used to be the masters of all they surveyed are now relegated to the status of “equal”. Some seem to not have adapted very well.
BTW…who is this “Fowley” guy you refer to?

Revisionist… Good Ole Days??? I think you can still marry off a 15 year old in some states.
Anyway, back to a serious thought. When people like Betty bring up what you call the “Good Ole Days”, why do folks always bring up the extreme negatives. Was there nothing redeeming about our not so recent past that it requires blanket and sarcastic condemnation? I’m not old enough so I can’t make that determination.
I am old enough however to see how much our society has degenerated in the last twenty years. I’m not sure what was so bad about the “Good Ole Days” but I have to wonder whether we’re actually better off now or then. Was the “progress” made worth it?

Good Post betty- but I don’t think this has been an overtime change- I think these same situations existed back in the day it’s just more out in the open now- I don’t think as you put it- through the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s we drastically changed- I think we were just more socially acceptable to being a homeosexual, promiscuous. I don’t think these situations didn’t exist back in the day- just now it’s more “comfortable” to talk about- or accept. Family lives have not tarnished whatsoever in my household. If you want family closeness- and good ol bonding time- I think how your family turns out is a direct result of what you are teaching your children and what you make a good example out of.

Of course this article is kind of a dumb question- yes the Repeat anything offenders should be penalized harsher so that they actually won’t do it again- But saying the value of a young childs life is more valuable than an adult woman- don’t even know why that twist is in it? No life is more valuable than any other life- of course it does go back to the question if you and your younger sibling and your older sibling were about to die and you could only save one- I would think more people lean towards the younger with the simple idea of “they have there whole life to live” But I hardly think a less punishment should be given to someone who raped a child or an adult woman- they should be the same for anyone!

Oh good grief! In the “old days” a woman either got LUCKY and married a decent man at the age of 20, not knowing anything about men or life, or she got STUCK in a bad marriage with no way out.
Yes, life probably WAS better for those couples from well-adjusted families who had similar goals & expectations, an understanding of the scope of responsibility, and depth of mutual love that lasted through their changing, growing lives. But that is in no way representative of the entire population. Young women often married the first man they could to get away from their parents, and it was a complete crap shoot! Alcoholism, drug addiction, violence, cruelty, infidelity, and perversion have ALWAYS existed. Now a woman has more ways to free herself, (as does a man — let’s be fair) than in the “good ol’ days.” What on earth is good about being trapped?

2D - I suppose it depends on what you mean by “better off”. I’m guessing that any person of color would say that society is “better off” now. I suppose any woman who wants to work in science, in technology, in medicine, law, or finance would say that we’re “better off”. I suppose that anyone who enjoys life would say that the extra 10 years (approximatly) that we’ve added to our life expectancy makes us “better off”. I suppose that would be echoed by anyone who’s no longer worried about polio, TB, rhubella, and leprosy. We could talk about whether we’re “better off” for having perfected open heart surgery, the pacemaker, and organ transplants. Those are just a few of the medical and technical advancements we’ve made. That doesn’t even touch on DNA sequencing, the internet, cell phones and cable news. All these advancements have, in some way, affected society as a whole. Some of us beleive that the problems of today are no greater than the challenges of yesterday, merely different. Things change, organisms adapt. Or they die.
Face it. Progress goes forward not back. Just because one can look back and feel nostalgic about the “days of yore” doesn’t mean that things were better. Just different. The civil rights era undoubtedly bettered society. It also opened the door to equality for those other minority groups like women, and homosexuals who were also at the bottom of the social ladder. Does the empowerment of ethnic minorities balance out the empowerment of social minorities? I think that living up to the ideals we as a society believe in, that all men are created equal for example, is definitely better for us all. But I guess that depends on your definition of “worth it” and “better off”.

2D. My father thought society was going downhill, his father said the same thing. I say the same thing to my children. People don’t like change but society changes with each generation and we don’t like it. My folks didn’t like rock and roll. I don’t like hip-hope. I’m sure when my children have kids of their own, the music their kids listen to will not be very popular to the parents. Natural progression/regression whichever way you look at it. We’re working toward Sodomn & Gomorrah. I think it’s supposed to be fire this time.

2D- I think we have progressed over the years- not regressed. It’s all a matter of opinions. I mean- if we really want to look back I would think that todays society would be a lot more open minded because hell look at it this way- we used to think slavery was acceptable- so I would just think that if people look at todays issues- they really won’t be issues in the future due to the ever changing world. Not an expansive response for you- like I said- it is all of a matter of opinions

Ah, yes, the good ol’ days when children were sexually assaulted by their relatives but never said anything or if they did tell nothing happened to the abuser; when homosexuals were given shock therapy; when women died from illegal abortions or else sent off in shame to have their babies then give them up for adoption; when people of color were not admitted to “white” schools; when people of color couldn’t vote; when people of color couldn’t hold certain jobs; when men could have their wives committed to insane asylums; when women were legally paid less than men and not hired for many jobs; when white people involved in the civil rights movement were charged with sedition; when communists could not work in Hollywood and homosexuals could not work for the government; when people were lynched and no one was arrested.

2D: No, I really don’t think society has regressed. Some aspects have faded while others come to the forefront; what many people grew up knowing and believing is no longer true.
But that happens with every successive generation… and there’s always some from the previous group bitterly complaining that “the good old days” were idyllic and that today’s society is obviously headed for the trash heap. (Ya durn kids, ya!)
I believe that’s an artifact of advancing age and faulty memory more than true, measurable societal change. Are some things worse? Yes, of course; I don’t pretend our society is perfect or that every change is for the better. (For pity’s sake, we’ve got BUSH as president!)
But I don’t accept the argument that morally, ethically, socially, and politically, our society is overall worse off now than it was in the 50s. Or the 1930s. Or the 1800s, for that matter.

So okay 2D, being of an older age group than most on this blog, let me provide some insight into the good ole days as I remember them growing up in a small southern town in the 50’s. Blacks lived on one side of town and whites on the other and never met except for the nannies and maids and cooks and chauffeurs and yard “boys” (who could be 60 years old!). Them was the good ole days! Homosexuals (they were all men of course) were called names, ridiculed as a matter of course, beaten up by the macho men and considered mentally ill by the medical establishment. They could be raided by the cops anywhere they tried to gather, thrown in jail, and beaten up. Them was the good ole days! I just found an article from some women’s magazine that I cut out when I was teenager last night. It was advice to young “girls” about what their relations with their husbands (men) would have to be like. The advice was all about taking care of their egos (never even recognized that she might have an ego), not making a big deal when he cheated because men were just going to and you might as well accept it, let him have his night out with the boys without any fuss, ad nauseum. Women were taught to be doormats. My mother and my mother-in-law were both doormats; when he said jump, they jumped. Male authorities were writing books telling women what kind of orgasm was healthy (vaginal) and what kind was not (clitoral). Women had to have children they didn’t want, did not value, and did not pay any attention to because they were so unhappy with a passal of kids they didn’t want! Women were taught they could not be doctors, lawyers, business leaders. The only professions for women were teacher, nurse and secretary. I could go on and on but it’s too frigging depressing to even think about them damn good ole days! Only white men (and a few brainwashed white women) think everything was so wonderful 50 years ago! No black person, no homosexual, and no liberated woman would ever, ever go back to that procrustean bed of hypocrisy, lies, and rigid social rules we lived in.

Betty, violence and thug culture came in the 90s? Oh let’s see. “Rebel without a Cause” was about gang activity, and it came out in the 50s. What was the Fonz? Was he a good boy who attended church, or somebody that ran around town with every girl? Look at the 20s. Most gangsters were revered such as Al Capone. Gangs and violence have around for a long time. The MAFIA has been around for a long time.

In 1959 my mother (with an accounting degree) was told “There’s no such thing as a women accountant.” She was hired in payroll and when she discovered that the man she replaced had made a lot more money she was told “he has to support a family.” She said she had to support a family, too. (She made more than my father.) A friend of mine in her 60’s was arrested just for being in a gay bar in the 1950’s and was sentenced to an insane asylum and given shock therapy — just for being a Lesbian. I know more than one woman who had to go either to NYC or to Puerto Rico for an abortion.

Disagree. Skin color has nothing to do with it. Do you think people were not afraid of gangs because they were white? No one was afraid of going against the Mafia because they were white. Gangsta Rap would be just as bad if whitey sang it. Love that race card.

I disagree- skin color does have something to do with it- WE feared white people back then that were powerful and could have you thrown in jail- or if you were of any color other than white you feared white people- now since we are still (sad to say) adapting to accepting people of another race and we see gangs or hoodlums that are black or mexican, etc- now we fear them- but look- a lot of people fear Bush and he’s White! lol

The thug culture reached the mainstream because many singers glorify violence and jail time resulting in middle class white kids wanting to emulate their heroes. Fonz was supposed to be a hood but he wasn’t presented as truly dangerous. Same with “West Side Story.” These were isolated entertainment representatives. Whereas some of the music stars now have lived the rough life and some still do.

Jack - I’m suppose some did “get their cookies” and some didn’t. The point I was trying to make was that, quite often, sex wasn’t a choice for women. Marital rape wasn’t “rape”. It was even considered a man’s marital right to bang his wife whether she wanted him to or not. It was a woman’s “duty” to cater to her husbands sexual needs. From the anecdotes I’ve heard of those days, sex was for male gratification and the woman just got lucky if she “got her cookies” too.

Was welfare as prevelent? Did you have more buying power? Nope, not safer. Did you not read the post yesterday about my mother being raped by her cousin? My grandmother a child of 16 when she married my grandfather who was 33 and I imagine they had to get married although never a word was said about that! I experienced several attempted sexual assaults in the 50’s and 60’s. I don’t know if the schools were better because I haven’t been involved in the schools for years. I lived with both of my parents, 2D, and that’s exactly why, when my marriage wasn’t what I wanted, I left it. I saw what two people who don’t love/respect each other can do to each other and their kids when they stay together out of obligation and guilt. I have more buying power now as a single woman than I had in the 60’s married. At least it feels like I do, because I make my own money and don’t have to ask any man for money or get his permission to buy something I want. (My ex used to follow me around in the grocery store and put back anything he decided we didn’t need!)

After reading posts here I guess that few of you were honored by the strong gifts that my parents afforded me. I can turn to my past and hold my head up proudly and also see the future that is full of possibility to make the word better. I do not agree that women were all so damaged or blocked by men nor were the people of my town hiding dirty laundry or that predators freely roamed like they can now. With the movement of women turning away from advanced careers to nurture their families—perhaps they were not wrong. Many of you seem bitter telling me that I should open my eyes—and see how damaged people there were—but the same posts reflect of how deeply troubled so many of you are because of your own behaviors and choices.
James Dean never bragged about doing jail time to be manly; his underwear stayed in his pants unseen and he was capable of acting without profanity being his claim to fame. He did not degrade the women he was filmed with but enhanced them.
As for the mafia they must have missed my town, my county and my street—we had no shootouts, no dons and crimes kids got into was shoplifting and truancy from school. We might have snuck beer into school but never once did we have shootouts and murders like happens now.

Exactly how many women do you think got their cookies if they believed only a “vaginal orgasm” was healthy? Not many I bet. One of my aunts had her first orgasm (after having six kids!) when somebody gave her a gift massage! It was a therapeutic massage too, my dear, which shows that it didn’t take much for her to get her cookies. How very sad for women back then.

Interesting talk about the “good old days.” Sadly, Leave It To Beaver and Main Street Disney World were never reality in this country. I dont think the morality of the country is very different now than we were in the 50’s. We see more of what goes on behind closed doors now though, which makes a huge difference. There was no reality TV, internet, etc to bombard us with the private lives of anyone who is even quas-famous. It is really more an issue of exposure to what has always been there that has changed.

Thank you Archie. Mara, you say it so well! My mother remembers being about eight and sobbing and falling and skinning her knees while she chased her mother who was running down the lane after her husband (my mother’s father) begging him not to go into town to visit the town “ho.” My grandmother was very pregnant and he was going after sex somewhere else! She already had three kids under eight, no education, lived on the farm! So what could she do but put up with it. That’s it for me folks. I’m getting too, too depressed about them good ole days!!!!

lozen - I have to agree with Archie, very well put.
Society changes, yeah kids wear their pants halfway down and “in the good ole days” kids did things that parents found equally as horrifying. Change is not always bad. And if acceptance of promiscuity and homosexuality is evidence of society going down, then down we must go!!! Although I for one, would think that acceptance in society is a step forward, but what do I know.
So really, the thug culture and violence have been around forever. It just started to scare the mainstream when it took on a browner skin tone.

Betty - you are making a fundamental mistake saying that those of us who look at history without romanticizing it are “bitter” or that we somehow can’t look at the past and hold our heads up high and view a future bright with hope and possiblity. I’m definitly not ashamed of my past so I, too, can hold myself with pride. Nor do I think that the women of my mothers generation were “damaged”, merely stifled. She had a child every other year for 18 years. That didn’t leave her much time to persue anything other than motherhood, even if she had wanted to. It was my mother more than my father who insisted that we children take turns with all the chores. The girls did yardwork and vehicle maintenance as well as dishes, laundry and cooking. Just as my brothers did. You see, she didn’t think that gender should limit ones possibilities.
If, in your view, marriage, children, and conjugal submission are the be-all and end-all on the path to a womans happiness, well…bully for you. Enjoy. But don’t fool yourself into believing that there weren’t women who didn’t, and don’t, think that their role in society should be determined by the fact that they had a uterus. It is a fact that in the 50’s and ‘60’s, even into the ‘70’s, women had very limited options in what they did with their lives. Nonetheless, it is completely possible to find satisfaction, and even contentment, in doing a job well even if it isn’t the job one would’ve chosen themselves, had they been given a choice. I’m sure that there were just as many women content with their lot then as there are now. It’s simply that we now get to choose what that lot is. IMO, that’s much, much better.
and, uh…James Dean did wear his underwear out there for all to see. Initially used as an undergarment, James Dean and Marlon Brando popularized the t-shirt (or “undershirt” as it used to be called) as an acceptable garment. Just thought you should know…

Standards are based on what the community finds acceptable—and those rules for acceptability change all the time. Used to be that interracial marriage was a crime; then it was just frowned on; then it was “fashionable;” and now it’s irrelevant.
Many other mores will follow this same path, albeit at different speeds. Does that mean “anything goes”? Not at all! Because human society is also very good at inventing new rules and protocols all the time; the “n-word” is no longer acceptable, for example.
Despite what Jerry Falwell and others would suggest, morality really IS an evolving and relative concept that changes over time, in every society. Some people will try to hurry change forward, and others will try to “hold the line” and resist changes they see as immoral or destructive. The uneasy balance between those factions is what determines the current day’s list of Acceptable and Unacceptable.
So what am I saying—that someday sex with minors will be Acceptable? Maybe so; it used to be in the Middle Ages of Europe (of course, they had a different definition of “minors” too). It certainly doesn’t appeal to me with my 2006-era perspective, and I agree with it being labeled a crime. But twenty or fifty years from now… who knows?
I suspect (I don’t know for certain, but I suspect) that in future, forcing others to do your bidding will be the primary basis for labeling some actions and behaviors Unacceptable. In that light, taking advantage of someone with reduced capacity for judgment (the mentally disabled, children, animals, etc.), may always be seen as ‘wrong’—I’d like to think so.
But then, I thought the Betamax would catch on; what do I know?

BC… I think most folks would concede that morality is an ever evolving and relative concept. In fact, I think that even Jerry Fallwell would concede that.
However, you yourself stated that you’d like to think taking advantage of someone with reduced capacity would always be seen as wrong.
So, the question isn’t whether or not morality evolves and is relative but the question is SHOULD it be?

Ooh, a discussion of moral relativism. 2D, Yes, I think morality SHOULD evolve. Look at 21th century views that would have been unaceptable 100 years ago. Full equality of the sexes, for one. 100 years ago people were arguing about whether women should vote. I know that’s not necessarily morality, but the idea was that “nice” women don’t want to worry about politics or they aren’t able to think without damaging their uteruses. This was seriously an issue. Brian’s example about interracial marriage is a good one. Of course, people have different ideas about the morality of homosexuality but I’m grateful that I live in an age where it is more accepted. That being said I think we have a long way to go, the gay marriage debacle being a good example.
200 years ago it was acceptable morally to enslave people or to force Indian children to cut their hair and forbid them to speak their tribal language. Divorce has also become more acceptable — not scandalous as it was 100 years ago. I could go on and on.

Although I will admit a morbid fascination with another movie which might be considered to be in the same genre, “Tattoo” with Bruce Dern and Maude Adams. If any of you missed that one, it’s definitely worth a rental.

If any of you ever want to see a REAL DOCUMENTARY instead of that crap that Michael Moore produces (crapumentaries), go down to Movies Worth Seeing and pick up a copy of “Wadd: The Life and Times of John Holmes”.
I’m not recommending it so much for the porno aspect, but for the fact that we can all learn about what childhood abuse does to men by watching this film. The AMAZING thing is how much Holmes’s friends truly loved him, even though he “stuck it to em” many times each. Even his first wife, who he treated terribly, spoke of him in a loving way. I guess they all knew in their hearts that it wasn’t John’s fault what happened to him as a child.

Another favorite movie of mine of all time is “Personal Best” with Mariel Hemingway. The acting gets a little campy at times, but the photography of the athlete’s movements while they trained hasn’t been equalled in cinema, in my opinion.
Of course, I had to cover my eyes when they showed a lengthy scene in the girl’s sauna (not!). I bet Renee would find that to be a really HOT movie. I think that’s one of the reasons I get along with lesbians so well. We both appreciate the same things in life.

The thug culture reached the mainstream because many singers glorify violence and jail time resulting in middle class white kids wanting to emulate their heroes.
I guess you forgot all about Rock n Roll folks like Marilyn Manson & Ozzy Osbourne who claimed to worship the devil, and who idolized devil worship and witch craft. No, THAT hadn’t affected little white suburban kids at all!! It was just the black kids from the projects.

It was great to hear from you Lyrazel. Sorry I didn’t know you well enough to peg you as “Sweet Charlotte”, which was a great film, BTW. Many great stars made early appearances in that one, including Bruce Dern and George Kennedy. Victor Buono was impeccable as the patriarch, although my favorite role of his to this day is that of Jim Ignatowski’s father in Taxi. Of course, everyone’s favorite in that film had to be Agnes Moorehead, who later prtrayed Endora on Bewitched. Joseph Cotten was awesome, as well as Olivia De Havilland. I’m glad she won the part instead of Joan Crawofrd. It would have been a mistake in my eyes to dilute “What Ever Happened To Baby Jane” by pairing them together again, ala Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in their two “blind date” movies together, “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail”. Many younger people never realized that both of these films were remakes of earlier classics.

SusieHomemaker—You didn’t happen to catch the Scream Awards on Spike TV last night, did you?? The grand finale was when they brought the Ozman himself onto the stage for their inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award for music? It was ruined only by having Marilyn Manson introduce him.

Most of my nieces and nephews can buy Eminem, Ludicrus and others (which I find equally disgusting) but NO WAY would they be able to buy Marilyn Manson.

Quick connection between Michael Stipe, Burl Ives, and Kirk Douglas for you all: In “The End of the World As We Know It”, Michael Stipe references Leonard Bernstein, who was one of the folks listed on the now infamous “Red Channels” list of left leaning actors in the 1950s. Also on this list were folks like Orson Welles and Burl Ives to many people’s surprise in today’s world.
The honorable ones who were called before the House Un-American Activities Committee told on themselves, but wouldn’t name co-conspirators. In the movie Spartacus, all the captured slaves claimed to be Spartacus, rather than turning in Kirk Douglass when questioned by the Roman Authorities. I don’t believe this is historically accurate, but it made for a good movie scene, since referenced in many other movies.

REPEAT sexual offenders that prey on women, AND repeat sexual offenders that prey on children should be tortured, raped, mutilated, then killed slowly. Pedophilia cannot be cured - teke them out for good! Men who hate women and use violence should be taken out. I want to see death squads of women (and men that want to help) round these freaks up and torture them, cut it off, and after a slow, slow murder, cut off their heads, stuff that thing in their mouths, and put the heads up on poles in public places so all other men can see what will happen to them if they do it! Music is for entertainment purposes, as is television and movies. Yes, the entertainment industry targets a group of people to make money, which is what they are in the business for. No matter what is being rapped about on the radio, sung, screamed or anything else, does not make anyone exhibit that type of behavior.
Ozzy bit the heads off of rodents on stage, while arguably not thuglike, it is not exactly the behavior of an upstanding citizen. The flip side of that is that people bought tickets to his show knowing and wanting to see him exhibit that type of behavior.
I listen to all music, but I love rap and hip/hop, because it is of my generation. I listen to old school, new school, anything. My favorite female rapper is Trina, whose every other word is about vulgar sex. It’s friggin entertainment. Every boy who listens to rap, and wears his clothes off his a* is not a thug.
I allow my daughter now that she is older, to listen to almost anything (not anything, but almost). Hip hop is a culture, that is often confused with thug culture and gang culture, which is not true. Yes, there is gangster hip hop for people who like it, because it sells. I listen to it, kids listen to it, but nobody is listening to a song about killing anybody and then saying let’s go kill a cop. They are already a person with no direction, with bad behavior qualities, even could be evil….so why blame their behavior on the music they listen to.
I went to school with people who listened to Ozzy, Sid & Nancy, wore the black clothes and they even tried to be Satan worshippers in school. While these were not the kids I particularly hung around, when they come to reunions today, they are well versed with children and great jobs. It’s a teenage fad, to emulate the stars you like. It happens, but it makes nobody a thug or gangsta or anything else.

I saw “Blue Velvet” as well Jack. The image of Dennis Hopper breathing into that mask remains burned in my mind to today. Isabella Rosselini took a big chance on that role.

R U Kidding!! She, (Patrice Rushen), probably bought him a magnum of champagne for christmas!!! She got PAID big time, introduced a whole new generation to her style, and did I say she got PAID big time!!
Quick history lesson on rap: Traditionally raps are over songs, (Think back to Isaac Hayes and Millie Jackson), the modern rap artists (back in the day) did not at first create their own beats, they “rapped” over someone else’s beats. The most ripped off artist in all of rapdom is James Brown — the original godfather of soul. His beats were always driven by that hard bass and by imaginative riffs.

Advertisers don’t make the artist — they just make the artist more well known.
How many times do you hear MFing B’s, etc. in such songs
These are lyrics heard only AFTER you’ve bought the CD — not on the radio (it’s bleeped out), or on commercials so I really am not following you with the repetition argument. PS: The same words can be heard in rock music, movies, sporting events, NASCAR, in some homes, probably even at a skating rink. The words aren’t the problem. I understand what the other poster was saying about the misogynistic aspect of some rap music; but has anyone ever watched VH1 when they do the Hard Rock videos? It’s not a trivial result, because it sheds important light on understanding the concept of “Dimension”.
You might start with “Linear Algebra Through Geometry” by Banchoff and Wermer, the best “intuitive” text out there in my opinion. Then when you’re ready, you can tackle something important like David Hilbert’s “Foundation of Geometry”. Don’t waste any time with Stephen Hawking, however, he’s nothing more than another blowhard in my “humble” opinion.

Renee… Sorry but I have to disagree with you.
It only stands to reason that the things children watch or listen too has an effect on them. Why do you think there is children’s television like Sesame Street or videos/DVDs like Baby Einstein? Why do you think it is has been suggested that playing classical music while they are sleeping stimulates their brain? Why do you think there is so much thought put into their toys? Why do think there is a corrolation between learning music and math performance. Because it all has an affect on how they develop. To believe that does not happen or does not carry on past the age of 2 is completely “ludicrus”.
As for rap music, anything that degrades women to the extent it does is disgusting. Referring to women to b’s, c’s or ho’s is completely worthless. And that goes for any type of entertainment, regardless of the genre. And please, let’s forget the whole “it is simply a reflection of culture” crap. Even if that is true, we shouldn’t be propagating it or romanticizing it by purchasing the CDs or DVDs, playing it on the radio or using it to sell merchandise. That only legitimizes the actions and continues it’s propagation.

Of course, the funny thing is that the vast majority of my clients when I was practicing chiropractic thought I was DUMB, because I always made sure to say ain’t a lot and use double negatives, along with a thick southern drawl. People are more satisifed as customers if you give them the ILLUSION that they are smarter than you and in control of the situation.
Here, since none of you are actually giving me your CASH, I don’t have to worry about offending you.

All rap music, not even most rap music degrades and demoralizes women. But yes, some does refer to women as b!tches and ho’s. I don’t find it degrading at all, but that’s me. I’m not a b!tch or a ho, but I can be either one, lol. And some women are b!tches and ho’s lol. Another thing, that is not the context of the song. Nobody raps b!tch, ho, b!tch, ho and then leaves the stage.
But back to my original point, all rap music does not use that language. I buy all kinds of rap, even kinds that you find demoralizing, so if that is propogating or romanticizing it, then so be it. I support it, I play it and if somebody doesn’t like it, it’s very simple, don’t buy it and don’t allow your children to listen to it.
And just like there are learning toys with music, did you know that some of the music is rap music, and depending on the culture of children, they learn math and other things through the rap music. I don’t see how classical music stimulates ones’ brain over another type of music, but oh well, what do I know….
If you think that there aren’t very intelligent people who listen to rap and are part of the hip hop culture, then you are very, very mistaken. Ying Yang Twins, who are a very hot rap group, make the “strip club rap” and both women and men buy it. It’s only degrading if you allow it to be. It’s entertainment. Their lyrics are funny and are usually made to a great track with and equally great hook.
Oh, and if rap lyrics are controversial, listen to pop songs, rap songs, even slow songs, and tell me you can’t find any controversial lyrics. Take it with a grain of salt, and enjoy the friggin song or don’t buy it.

You still have your Philly accent, Jack? I had to work like the dickens to get rid of the last traces of mine. A few years in California helped.
I am very proud of my “language accents”, however. Many latinos have told me I don’t sound that much like an American when I speak Spanish. My Russian accent isn’t bad either, and I can even fool some Koreans over the phone when I order take out food.

Movie Dog Clapton Chiropractor Mennonite Wannabe—- You sure like blogging to yourself, dont you?
SusieHomeMaker—we share the same birthday. Congrats kid! I turned 74 yesterday. Retirement is bliss! My prayers tend to go unanswered but I’ll throw one up for ya for that special day!
Betty Castration solves nothing. In the years of mandatory punishments they have tried: Chain-gangs, electro-shock, lobotomies, enemas, and they cant seem to get over that stickler of a damn law called: civil liberties.
Thug culture…well you know once hollywood thinks its cool: its over. Once Muzak plays your hits…its over. Even the hippity-hoppers are wearing buttondowns now. I done seen MC Hammer dancin’ with Vanilla Ice on the stage at Dollywood! Folks were supposed to go to hell for listening to Elvis (girls were rumored to not be virgins for dancing too hard… now these liberated mommies are throwing panties at Tom Jones) All those hippies are going to hell for listening to the Beatles. So, I guess hell will be full of good music! Hopefully they will be playing Firebird Suites by Igor Stravinsky (Which was scandalous and banned as well btw) when we arrive…
Music…We grew up listening to Frank Sinatra and Harry Belafonte…Calypso! and mom controlled the records and the record player and the money. We had transistor radios…but the hits played were Bobby Darien, Fabio and Leslie Gore and Doris Day…it was MUCH later that folks like Lil’ Richard, Chubby, Fats, Temptations and Supremes were played down south on AM radio but if the radio was pointed up you could hear stations at night out of New York drowning out On the Street Where You Live playing downstairs.
When rock was worth listening to I was into Zappa/Beafheart & Mothers but I suppose everyone had We Are Only In It For The Money, right? The only Clapton album I ever owned was 421(?) Ocean Boulevard because I liked Let It Grow…saw the Byrds in Mexico City about the time Sgt. Pepper was released…there was a riot after people started falling off the utility poles they had climbed up to see the band on scared the * out of me. Anyone remember when the Monkees came to Atl. first time teamed up with Jimmy Hendrix? My sister went. She dragged me to see the Turtles and has Herman of Herman’s Hermits autograph. Duh…she went on to Elvis Costello…and her son likes Bare Naked Ladies.
Favorite movies: Ooooh, gotta be Quest for Fire! Fantasia, 2000 Motels, Barton Fink! Blue Velvet was good but I thought Eraserhead was better. Recently saw Children of Paradise,Grave of the Fireflies. One good but overlooked movie is Das Boot! Klaus Kinski is phenomenal in that and Agirre Wrath of God Another good cry flick is Harold & Maude also A Patch of Blue, with Sidney is excellent and you WILL need a hankie! Sid & Nancy playing with Decision at Nuremberg make a great Christmas combo guaranteed to keep the relatives from staying over during the holidays.
As for Marilyn Mason…as Zappa used to say: Shut up and Play your Guitar….

Brian… I think it affects everyone. Personally, I am more afraid of what the video game phenomenon is going to do to our society than rap music. Those games have become so realistic I just shudder at the thought of them.
It also appears that Renee has taken up a crusade to save rap music. Guess what, I don’t listen to it because I don’t like the music (loose use of the term). In my opinion it takes little or no musical ability to make it. Give me an orchestra with actual musicians rather than some sampling machine anyday. I think rap music is a bad influence due to the lyrics (not the music) and the lifestyles/attitudes of the “artists” (loose use of the term). Of course “rap” can be used to teach things, but then the lyrics aren’t denigrating women, romanticizing drug use, preaching it’s cool to bag a bunch of chicks or glorifying killing people. I learned lots of things through songs and rhymes. In fact I still use the one to get the number of days in each month.

I rewatched both Taxi Driver and Good Will Hunting two nights ago. Although I’d like to believe I’m more like Robert De Niro, my life is almost a mirror image of Will Hunting’s.
I actually tried counseling once, so I guess my favorite scene is when Matt Damon starts singing “Afternoon Delight” for the therapist who thought he had hypnotized Matt.
My second favorite is when some clown tries to impress Minnie Driver in a bar with his knowledge of History. Kind of reminds me of DOG vs. chuck and BC.

I’m merely expressing my opinion. Rap music doesn’t need a crusade by me to save it. It doesn’t need saving, as a matter of fact, it’s doing quite well holding it’s own. You are perfectly entitled to your opinion, actually most older people share your opinion, both black and white. But be aware that others don’t share your opinion, and it should be made available to all who want to listen. Also, you speak frequently of the lyrics, so please tell me exactly which lyrics you speak of. What songs?? What artist?? Tell me what artist has what attitude. It sounds to me like you have formed an opinion based upon what you have heard to be true, or assume, or heard third hand. Yes, there are people in the rap culture who use drugs and get in trouble. Oh, I forgot, it’s only rappers using and glorifying drugs, not movie stars, not comedians, not singers, none of THEM glorify it at all….ahhhh I see….
And to some it is cool to “bag a bunch of chicks”. If I wasn’t tied down, I sure might be trying to. LOL

2D - you made direct references to rap music, in response to Susie’s response, and then I made comment. I didn’t defend Ludacris although I did ask what was wrong with his music (it was a one sentence post sometime this morning). And then you specifically asked me was I saying that it has no effect on people specifically children.
My answer to that then (and now) is no. I don’t think it has a negative effect on people or children.
As far as commercial success, tobacco companies are making a sh!tload of money, off of somebody….oh yeah, off of smokers, some of who don’t care what effect it has on the human body. So who is not doing fine too? The smokers who buy it are also enjoying it, and the tobacco companies are raking in the bucks.
But it’s still really unfair to compare rap music or any music to a drug or other harmful toxin. Rap music doesn’t have carry the possibility of death if you listen to it.
So if that is “defending” rap music, then by all means, yes I am. Although I would use my arguments to defend any type of music, but I’m not as well versed in all genres as I am in the one that is the topic of our current discussion.
And you don’t find anything wrong with someone defending something they either believe in or agree with, now would you. That’s treading into dangerous waters.

Butchered rotted corpse defiled
Hand me the bonesaw
Time for dissection
Hand me the bonesaw
Begin the amputation
Dying slow and painfully
A gasping breath escapes from you
I rip the flesh and cut through bone
You are bleeding
Sawed your body parts away
Disgusting rotten stench surrounds
Gushing stumps are frayed and torn
Exposing cartilage and bone
Hand me the bonesaw
Time for dissection
Hand me the bonesaw
Begin the amputation
Dying slow and painfully
A gasping breath escapes from you
I rip the flesh and cut trough bone
Alive to watch your arms removed
Cutting - killing sawed to pieces

Scraping bone the marrow leaks
Mouth taped shut so you can’t scream
Saw blade binding cranial

Dairy and Beef are kept separately, association-wise.
National Cattlemen’s Beef A*’n(NCBA) takes care of the beef part, I am a member of the local state (Cattleman’s A*’n) one. Not too familiar with the dairy end, association-wise.

Some Tupac Lyrics (don’t worry he’s not talking about bit#hs and h0s — he talking about the problems of the ghetto)
Brenda’s got a Baby
I hear Brenda’s got a baby
Well, Brenda’s barely got a brain
A damn shame
Tha girl can hardly spell her name
(That’s not her problem, that’s up to Brenda’s family)
Well let me show ya how it affects the whole community
Now Brenda never really knew her moms
and her dad was a junky puttin death into his arm
It’s sad, cause I bet Brenda doesn’t even know
Just cause your in the ghetto doesn’t mean ya can’t grow
But oh, that’s a thought, my own revelation
Do whatever it takes to resist the temptation
Brenda got herself a boyfriend
Her boyfriend was her cousin, now lets watch the joy end
She tried to hide her pregnancy, from her family
Who didn’t really care to see, or give a damn if she
Went out and had a church of kids
As long as when tha check came they got first dibs
Now Brendas belly is gettin bigger
But no one seems ta notice any change in her figure
She’s 12 years old and she’s having a baby
In love with tha molester, whos sexed and crazy
And yet she thinks that he’ll be with her forever
And dreams of a world with tha two of them are together, whatever
He left her and she had tha baby solo
She had it on the bathroom floor and didn’t know so
She didn’t know, what ta throw away and what to keep
She wrapped the baby up and threw him in the trash heep
I guess she thought she’d get away, wouldn’t hear the cries She didn’t realize how much tha the little baby had her eyes
Now tha babys in the trash heep balling
Momma can’t help her, but it hurts to hear her calling Brenda wants ta run away, momma say, you makin’ me lose pay The social workers here everyday Now Brenda’s gotta make her own way
Can’t go to her family, they won’t let her stay
No money no babysitter, she couldn’t keep a job
She tried ta sell crack, but end up getting robbed
So now what’s next, there ain’t nothin left ta sell
So she sees sex as a way of leavin hell
It’s payin tha rent, so she really can’t complain
Prostitute, found slain, and Brenda’s her name, she’s got a baby

Chilao, Arianna is right. Bush is a dry drunk! Anyone who knows anything about alcoholism knows that. Except maybe he isn’t really dry! AA has lots of literature about what dry drunks are like; read up and you will see. “Quest For Fire” is one of my faves also, and “Harold and Maude, “King of Hearts” with Alan Bates, “Frida,” “Chocolat” with Depp and Binoche, Legend of the Fall with Brad! with long hair. Watched “Original Sin” (Antonio and Angelina) last night for the third time in 10 days - in Spanish with english sub-titles. Understood some things I didn’t understand before. Antonio is my idea of the perfect man! The two of them together with a long scene in bed - wow! Where is that fan Jack?

speaking of “old” rappers, saw a program either last night or night before about a whole group of native-Atlanta rappers getting together in an old College Park neighborhood to recreate Art Kanes fabulous Esquire portrait of Harlem Jazz Musicians in 1958.
Other than the well-spoken TLC girl, I couldn’t tell you who all was there. They introduced themselved but for the life of me I couldn’t understand 3/4 of what they said. :^(

Many thanks to you Renee, I like your spirit. As a parting gift to you, I would like to share my holdem secrets with you.
Many people wrongly think that the answer to good holdem play lies in the cards and the mathematics. I use neither. It’s a people game, it’s all about patterns that people exhibit. As a result, I can usually guess the strength of my opponent’s hands, and how the value of their hand changes with each additional card revealed, strictly based on their “pattern” of play along with whatever “tells” they give me.
By In Search of the Southern Cross
October 12, 2006 10:53 AM | Link to this
In return, I practice an ancient japanese art while playing holdem which involves placing dots on a blank piece of paper in a way that creates NO PATTERN. It’s a very strange art form. This may sound easy to do, but remember how hard it was for Mara to continue misspelling words when she was trying to mock me. I believe she discovered that it’s easier for humans to spell words CORRECTLY than INCORRECTLY. So when I’m successful in creating NO PATTERN with my bets, no one can guess where I’m coming from. This gives me a big edge.
Of course, the Unabomber outfit helps as well. It really spooks people if you don’t speak except to announce your bets.

Too bad I wasted my time on the Science stuff for BC’s benefit, I never got to tell you my best stories about working for Hess gas station and Domino’s Pizza. The Law of Security goes something like this. It is almost a guarantee that in the pursuit of security you will become more insecure. Inherent in the quest for security is its undoing. Some recent examples: bomb Iraq to get rid of theoretical terrorists and manufacture thousands of potential terrorists in the process.
Send American soldiers into battle in Iraq to make the country secure, but refuse to spend any money on armor to make the soldiers secure, so that eighty per cent of those who receive upper body wounds die of wounds that could have been prevented. Declare war on Iraq to get rid of chemical weapons and end up using illegal chemical (incendiary devices) weapons that destroy the children you are saving. Secure democracy by using techniques of torture that not only thoroughly undermine democracy, but spread distrust, contempt, rage, and violence which will forever make democracy impossible. In securing freedom, rob citizens everywhere of their basic civil rights, imprison them without trial or recourse, hold them for as long as you like without charging them. Put them in invisible prisons in countries that you once claimed were responsible for Gulags. Wire-tap private citizens and by doing so expand presidential powers so they become Imperial Powers and strip the so-called democracy you were defending. Promise to liberate women through your occupation and invasion and in the process reverse their constitutional rights, rob them of protection, raise the levels of violence permitted towards them. Spend all of your money on security and end up with the hugest deficit ever, no healthcare for the majority of citizens, no protection against disasters, no vaccines for a potential flu plague. Make the world “secure” by spending all of your money on destroying things rather than creating — bomb rather than build, annihilate rather than feed. Focus your attention on imagined enemies who must be controlled or destroyed and in the process make them your real enemy. Rescue people from insane dictators by terrorizing them. Allow corporations to ransack countries you are, in theory, saving, making the majority of the people poor and sick and without resources, and then call them security threats, illegal combatants, terrorists, insurgents, when they rise up to fight you.
