Is it fiber or is it cardboard?

I have taken the lead from my fellow “bloggers” and decided to incorporate more healthy foods into my diet.

Well, this weekend I found myself in the store reading food labels looking for “high fiber, low sugar, and whole grains” like Rachel taught us. I purchased a couple of the foods she suggested. The problem is that these foods require a certain characteristic that I haven’t adapted yet … lack of flavor!

She really stressed eating high-fiber breakfast foods also. I’m proud to say that I’ve been eating Raisin Bran for breakfast this week. This is a major step for me because I usually skip breakfast (I know, I know… bad move!). I have to eat it dry, otherwise, I’ll load it with sugar. I scoop out 2 cups and snack on it as I sit in traffic or at my desk at work. I try to remember to eat a piece of fruit or drink some juice with it too. It really does keep me full, at least until lunch time.

I also found that this transition period between junk foods and a healthier lifestyle is expensive. I spent more money on groceries than I ever have before (more than I’d like to admit). It was like shopping for a whole other person. I had feed my “laid-back, relaxed, ‘live to eat’ personality” and my “health-conscious, aware, ‘eat to live’ personality.”

I usually shop for groceries every 4-6 weeks, other than running to the store for a loaf of bread or eggs or something. I realized that I’ll be in the grocery store more often shopping for fresh produce. I had to learn the hard way that it’s a waste to buy fresh fruit in bulk!
