Curve balls and comfort food….

Just when you think you have everything in line… WHAM! Life throws you a curve ball… just to see if your paying attention!

Since Oct 2, 2004, I’ve had 7 close friends plus two relatives pass away. Each time it happens… out comes the food. I guess people automatically assume that you’re not eating or that all this food will somehow make one feel better. Comfort food… it always makes us feel better.

Sunday morning I got a call that my buddy Bill (who had been sick) died of pneumonia at the age of 62. We were getting ready for his funeral on Wednesday when I got another call that my sister Camile (52), who lives down in Pensacola, and had been battling cancer for the past two-and-a-half years, had taken a turn for the worse. I changed my plans immediately and was about to head south Wednesday morning. Unfortunately, I was too late, Camile quietly passed away at 10 pm Tuesday night.

On Thursday morning I drove from Atlanta to Pensacola. The drive took 5 very long hours. The funeral was the next day… This was not turning out to be a very good week. And yes… There was plenty of food… And yes… We did feel better.

Camile was a brave and courageous lady who battled her cancer with the fortitude of a Marine. She loved ice creme and each time she would come home from some kind of radiation or chemo treatment, she’d ask to stop at her favorite shop and get coffee ice creme.

Camile’s girlfriends and sister Jill were with her at the end. They were giving her morphine mixed in with ice creme to ease her pain. Her last words were… “More ice creme!” We don’t know if it was a request or a statement about life! Her friends all say they intend to eat more ice creme. I agree… But it has to be low carb at this point.

The big weigh-in on Saturday was disappointing, a net gain of 5 lbs. I’ll get back to the afternoon walks, drinking more water, watching the carbs, calories.

Next week will be better

Stay tuned and Semper Fi

Christian,

I am sorry about your loss. Grief and stress can make you turn toward food. It will get better. I will keep you in my prayers.

my deepest sympathies…will offer you some words of encouragement…

you are often told to keep your eye on the prize…sometimes that gets difficult because many things can block your vision and you start to forget the prize even exists…

so…my advice…keep your MIND on the prize…so that even when you can’t see it…you know it’s there…clarissa c. smith
