From Burger King to bananas…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Well week one is over.
What have I learned? Well, that the sins of today don’t catch up with you until about 7 to 10 days down the road. So the good time with all the great Cajun and Spanish food that I had in New Orleans didn’t appear till this week! Any weight loss was negated by some weight gain. Net result was 0 lbs. gain/loss, which I guess is good! The holidays are now over and I can get serious again about this program. My wife Christine has been doing a bit better than me this week. She’s been working out 4 days a week at “Curves,” a local ladies fitness center. She’s doing great and has already lost 6 lbs.
One of the big problems that I have is that we (the family) eat out about 4 nights a week due to our schedules. I’m the state Commandant for the Marine Corps League, which is a Marine veterans organization. My duties take me all over the state to meetings, dinners, breakfasts and receptions. It’s hard to say no to all the food that comes across your plate. What I try to do is to take small portions of everything and hope that the “will power” will kick in. I also take items that I’m not real fond of which helps a bit. Christine works long hours at her job and by the time she and I get home its just easier to grab a bite out then go through all the hassle of cooking. Her son Tad (13) now thinks our kitchen is actually in a Burger King!
When I am home, I love to cook out on the grill. We use the grill all year long. I also like to try out new recipes that I find on the Internet. I learned to cook when I was a kid. We had six kids and dear old “Mom” was not what you call a great cook. In fact she hated cooking still does. Her theory was… Serve small portions, starving people will eat anything!
Now with this new life style change, I’m more attuned as to what we eat. I read the labels more as to calorie, sugar and carb content. Snacks around the house have gone from cookies to fruits such as apples and bananas. We even got Tad try a banana…Amazing! Plus he now likes them!!!
Hopefully week two will be a “losing proposition”
Stay tuned and Semper Fi

Chris,
How about these ideas for an attitude shift when you are eating out so often:
At age 57, if you are blessed with a long life and live to be 80, you have at least 25,000 eating occasions left. Is this food (fill in the blank) so important that you can’t postpone it this once?
If you see the same foods come up time and time again, they aren’t special, they are regular - so pass them up more often.
Forty years ago, most people ate at home and eating out was truly a special occasion and people usually ate more, but only occasionally. Not anymore, as your life indicates - so why treat every meal out as a special occasion? It’s just another fuel stop.
Focus on the company more than the food.
Hope this food for thought helps - I lost 40 pounds using these and other techniques.
