Age: 55.
Job: Small-business owner
Town: Snellville
Height, weight: 5 feet 4 inches; 190
Goal: “To be fit, to be healthy again.”
Biggest pitfalls: All-or-nothing thinking; popcorn.
Regular exercise: None
Quote: “I got on the scales the other day, and I was mortified.”
Battle-with-the-bulge history: For more than 40 years, Oltmann was, as she puts it, “a skinny person. I’m a little girl.” Gradually, in her 40s, that changed. Now the excess weight weighs just as heavily on her mind as it does her body. Because she was always thin before her 40s, she never learned how to balance how much she ate with her level of activity.

I THINK THE WEIGHT GAIN IS MENOPAUSAL, BECAUSE IT HAPPENED TO ME AND IT ALL SEEM TO SETTLE IN THE STOMACH AREA TO GIVE ME THIS ROUND BALL LOOK. THE BEST THING IS EXERCISE AND DIET. I THINK THERE ARE SOMETHINGS IN THE DIET THAT ARE TABOO AT A CERTAIN AGE.

Hi Carmelia,
There are many things (including menopause) that can compel someone to overeat.
You can learn about these things by exploring the links at our web site:

Joye; I feel that I can best identify with you and your weight issue. I am fighting weight myself and have failed in my attempts at dieting more times than I can count. I will give this a shot and hope that we can succeed together. I have a tendancy to give up if I mess up so let’s take that thought out of our minds. Good luck.
