Sober up, and pass the slogans
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Back in the day when Enemy Watch was a college matriculator, the popular political slogan regarding The Reagan Republic was that it was “Morning In America.”
A decidedly apolitical Enemy Watch thought it was because the drinking age was 18, and being four hours away from home and semi-independent for the first time, there were no parents to detect the after-effects of partaking in Orange Blossom Special Night at the just off-campus watering hole.
Indeed, these were simpler times, before there was as much media and therapeutic hand-wringing over “binge drinking” as there is actual excessive imbibing by the student set today.
The phrase didn’t exist then, but now, in The Republic of Fear, with adulthood being deferred to 21, you can’t even tune into cable news while downing a couple brews in the privacy of your own home without it being bellowed in your ears.
So what’s the solution to a very serious matter? Euphemize it, of course.
The latest target of the sloganeering storm troops is the college football game formerly known as The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Florida-Georgia has always been about more than a game and a rivalry. It’s been about the celebration of it.
Some folks have celebrated a bit too much, to be sure, and there have been some tragic, deadly events the last two years. But is this reason enough to force the TV networks to sanitize any mention of the fact that drinking, sometimes heavy drinking, does go on, and for the most part without incident?
Certainly the student press in Athens has a jaded view of such absurdity, fabulously concocting this moniker: “The World’s Largest Non-Alcoholic University-Sanctioned Family-Fun Event and Bowl (No admittance without passing alcohol awareness test).”
And some of the grown-ups feel the same way: “Presidents Clamp Down On Cocktail Party Phrase.”
Well, university presidents ARE politicians, who traffic in empty, meaningless slogans. Similar re-wording efforts are going on regarding that Little Cocktail Party in Baghdad, too.
The obsession here is what to call something, rather than what to do about it.
Georgia coach Mark Richt can’t paper over his team’s cracks with words. One Sunshine State scribe asks: Are these “the toughest times in Richt’s six seasons in Athens?”
Surely the depth — and speed — of the Gators all over the field has been a very sobering matter for Bulldog Nation to ponder.
In that same account, Gators coach Urban Meyer is hinting that true frosh QB phenom Tim Tebow might play a bigger role on Saturday.
“I think we’ll evaluate Tim as we keep going this week,” Meyer said.
Downstate, the Miami Hurricanes are busy in Throwback Mode, still reeling from brawls and damn near losing to Duke. For their visit to Georgia Tech on Saturday, they may bring along a bad boy banished for something other than brawling.
Jeez, why don’t they just hop off the plane at Hartsfield in commando camouflage threads, like Jimmy Johnson’s lads did one year for the Fiesta Bowl? Wearing sunglasses. At night.
As for the game against the Yellow Jackets, the Canes will try to stop C.J., coming off a career-first no catches against Clemson.
Tech fans are still recovering from their post-Death Valley hangovers. On The Hive, the big question this week is:
Miami or UGA? 1) Who do you fear more right now? and 2) Which do you want more?

“The most predictable college football game of the season” - 1-4 VS. UF. You are a joke Richt. Your “D” has been there to bail you out untill now. Now we are all able to see what happens to us when we are forced to out score other teams. We Suck. UGA needs to hire someone who is as dedicated to beating UF as “the evil one” was to beating us. Fire tho whole staff and take a bye week before this game. This is a JOKE! What will it take for this university to get serious about this game? will we have to go 2 for 20? 2 for 30? BEAT UF!

Not to mention 4 Straight top 10 finishes
What has UF done in the same time? A bunch of 5 LOSS Seasons!
Yes we need to get consistant at beating UF but keep in mind this year UGA is playing 22 Freshmen/Red shirt Freshmen
The next 4 years will be exciting with these guys… UGA already has #3 recruiting class for next year!

Chase - FSU always finishes in the top 5 when it comes to recruiting. What have they done this year? The DAWGS need more fans like me! we are 2 for 16 against our most hated rival (and anyone who does not think so has not been around a bunch of UFaggs lately). Fans like me do not accept losing that many times to a bunch of Hockey/NASCAR/Billy Ray Crus fans. I grew up in Gaynesville, have two parents who both graduated from and now work for UF, have sat in the Fla section in Jax every year since I was 4yrs old (wearing red and black even then). I live and breath UGA football. SEC titles mean nothing when you lose to UF! We have plenty of talent Chase, they are just not motivated and that is the coaches job.

po’d in north florida, like Chase said, we don’t need fans like you. You probably never played the game, much less coached it. You have no idea sitting on your sofa every saturday watching television what it takes to coach a ball team and then you get on the blog making stupid comments like firing the best coach we’ve had since our heralded Dooley year (1980). Get off Coach Richt’s backside and support your team and coach. Better yet, go coach a football team and tell me how easy it is. And yes, I do know what it’s like (on a high school level - not nearly the same). I’ve also been to Richt’s practices and watched him coach…. believe it or not, this guy DOES know what he’s doing. Maybe that’s why we’ve extended his contract (coming from Damon Evans - a former player and Dooley himself - our former god - or was it Hershel? j/k)…. Like Chase said, look at where we’ve been the last five years and look where UF has been ….. look where we finish…. and we consistently FINISH THE DRILL! Get a life Po’d. Go Dawgs… whatever the outcome, I’m in support of Richt and his program (unlike some idiot fans who only want to win ONE game vs. UF a year for family bragging rights).

Fans like Chase and his “idiot” friend are the reason we will continue to lose to UF. You will blindly support Richt no matter where he takes us. 2 sec championships is great but we won it with defense. The fact that I have never coached a game makes me different from how many of these venters? I do know that we have 3 (now 2) great running backs and one of the best full backs in college footbal. I also know that NONE of our receivers can catch the ball. To me this would mean we may try to run the ball a little more but what do I know? Richt just kept on chunking it against Miss State untill we were on the verge of losing to the worst team in the SEC. When we handed it to Lumpkin it was 5,10,15 yards. Give Richt a big hugg for me if you see him. I have got to go to Jax now and explain to all of my Gaytor friends why we once again have no chance to beat UF. Are you not tired of the old “wait till next year” Chase? Next year never comes. Dont you get it?

Why is it that it only took one game for Fl. fans to Jump ship on Zook yet that was just “passion” or “high expectations”. Yet if a georgia fan criticizes Richt they are some kind of trader? Are we not allowed to get upset that he has gone (after saturday) 1-5 against the most hated team in the SEC? It seems that we as UGA fans should be more thankful for any win we get where as UFaggs are just supposed to want it more. Somehow booing thiere starting qb was just a sign of “passion” yet when we boo a WR after dropping EVERY FREAKIN BALL we are some kind of monsters.

Gaytor Hater : I’m as sick as any other UGA fan about losing to FLA EVERY year, yet you can’t fairly compare Richt w/ Zook. Richt has had 4 consecutive 10-win seasons, 3 SEC Championship appearances, and 2 SEC Championships in the 5 years he’s been at UGA. Richt/UGA also hold the best win percentage of any SEC school in his tenure. Yeah, yeah, losing to FLA sucks, especially when you have a better team. But if you had a choice which would you rather have? A team that has NO SEC appearances, 7-5 & 8-3 win seasons every year, and the only bright spot being beating ONE particular team, OR would you rather have the SEC Championships & 10-win seasons. I’d like to have both, but if I had to chose I’d have to go with the UGA record.

I know I am in the minority here but I really would choose to beat UFaggs every year and sacrifice any championships. I know how crazy that sounds but I live very close to Gaynesville (aka little Long Island) and I just can not believe the way that there are so many a holes attracted to one particular school. I think that is why “the ole ball coach” was such a good fit.

I’m a Uga grad and on behalf of the absolute idiots who are aparently blowing Richt, let me apologize on their behalf. Being critical of Richt is a sin to some. Apparently, since he won 2 SEC Championships in down years for the SEC, then went on to beat a 2-loss Fl. State team in one bowl game and LOSE to the lowly Big East Champ West Virginia last year, he is now the G0D of Uga forever.
See in these idiots’ eyes Richt can never do anything wrong. He hasn’t even won a National Championship, which HE NEVER WILL AT GEORGIA, and he already has Vince Dooley status - another “I won A Championship, so now I can suck forever and Georgia fans will always love me.” Richt is so damn lame that I guarantee he could sleep on a bed on the sidelines during the game and Georgia’s players could call a better game. Oh wait, Richt already sleeps on the sidelines. Wake up people, this is a world of “What have you one for me lately” and Richt hasn’t done sh1t except embarass the Georgia program this year with his first TRUE 5-YEAR CLASS of recruits. How the Fu*k do you have a “rebuilding” year when you have 5 years of Top 5 recruiting classes?????? HELLO you f*** IDIOTS. You buy into that sh1t, like a bunch of f*** bozos.

I’m sorry, but to say Flori-duh is our biggest rival is downright moronic. To fans from different generations it is a different team…40s/50s Tech,90s to now Florida with a sprinkling of Tennessee for example, but a true historian will tell you our biggest rival is Auburn. Until Darth Visor showed up, Vandy had a better record against Georgia than Florida did for God’s sake. Some rival. Look at what team has taken the most from Georgia, and you’ll see Auburn has cost us more. Screw UF, I want Auburn. And for those who measure a season by one game, get off the blog. I wouldn’t take a 1-10 season if it meant only beating Florida. 2002 SEC champions, 2003 Runners Up to Nat’l Champion LSU (a team we could have beaten in Baton Rouge had we had a full complement of players, the Dome was LSU’s night though), East runners up 2004 (due to Auburn loss), 2005 SEC champions. Lost to a very good West Virginia team (yeah, they are good…should we have won, yes, but they came out and got after us with 28 in the 1st qtr and, to our credit, we picked ourselves up and fought back hard). We are young, one of the youngest teams in the SEC. Let’em grow. Look at Tennessee’s resurgence (yeah, they have had some close games, but they won them, something we will do in time). Our guys are young, they’ll remember these lumps come next year, the teams that handed them out…

You made my point exactly. TWO for SIXTEEN why didn’t you kill yourself before CMR came to UGA. During the ONE for ELEVEN we didn’t even win one SEC Championship. Everyone sees errors in CMR game, time management, offensive play calling, yada yada yada. I too believe changes need to be made. We need our O coordinator calling plays, new D coordinator, WR coach yada yada. If it was not CMR leading us to the two SEC Championships then who the he11 did. It might take longer for him to adapt because of his Family oriented mentality (not letting go of his coaches) but like everyone else’s family there is that one Uncle no one talks to, because they get tired of his s**. I hope that Uncle will be UGA’s D coach, and WR coach.
