‘Shakeout’ in the Peach State?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The headline in today’s newspaper (you know, what you hold in your hand and get inky fingers from) says this is “Shakeout Saturday” in college football. So it must be true.
But for a couple of late touchdowns pulled off by Florida State last week, The Enemy Watchwoman avers that we could have had it already. And, no less from her alma mater, a mid-to-lower level state institution with virtually no academic standards whatsoever (thus prompting her unchallenged enrollment and, shockingly, the conferring of a diploma four years later) and close to nothing but the ground. And since its foolhardy rise from Division II mediocrity to I-AA national champ to I-A wanna-be, a program that usually pretends at being big-time in football.
For 54 minutes in Tallahassee, it actually was one. Troy University (sans the State, which disappeared without your humble blogger, Class of ‘82, knowing about it) has had only two major construction projects since her departure. One was the expansion of what is now Movie Gallery Stadium to 30K. This was a place that not long ago proudly flailed “Dixie” as its fight song, but now trumps up more universal lyrics.
Can the absurd become frighteningly real for Georgia Tech? Now that the Yellow Jackets have had some Bulldogs they can beat, you would think not. Yes, Samford was a crummy I-AA team. But Troy has two 5-foot-11 corners to go against Calvin Johnson. The Trojans are small, but very speedy, led by an elusive juco transfer quarterback who might have been able to steer a shocking upset, had he not gotten ill.
This is supposed to be the middle of a three-game pick-up-the-money-and-get-your-butt-kicked swing for Troy, which plays at Nebraska next week. Except the Trojans aren’t getting their butts kicked.
Perhaps looking ahead to the Bowden Bowl, FSU had only 45 rushing yards, seven fumbles, and heard something a whole lot stronger than “dadgum” from Bobby afterward. One ‘Nole said: “They’re a for-real team.”
The odds give Tech a 17-point advantage. That sounds about right. But with the Jackets having a quick turnaround into ACC play against Virginia next Thursday, this one could be intriguing. I say the Trojans cover, but Tech avoids the FSU pitfall (as well as N.C. State’s ridiculous loss to Akron) and comes away relatively unscathed.
The Athenians at UGA are no less settled about the prospect of playing a UAB team that fell only 13-10 back in 2003. This is Matt Stafford’s first game in charge as the starting QB, and this too could be a tricky encounter.
The Blazers pulled out a tough win over East Carolina last week in a win that earned some props from Mark Richt. A Georgia boy will start at QB for UAB in a contest apparently determined by his native son status.
Some Bulldogs who played in that 2003 game said they remember it well and are trying to avoid it being so tight again.
Some Dogs fans (and beat writer bloggers) might be bemoaning the lack of exciting non-conference games, but for those of us from the Troys and UABs of the college football world, this is our LSU-Auburn and Florida-Tennessee.

Watched replay of the SC game, with any type of offense/execution, could have been a contest. SC is not very good, yet they penetrated. Also, concerned with the offensive lines lack of depth. Georgia should win, my concern is later down the line and the difficulty of the schedule down the line.
Noted a number of UAB’s, OL were JC transfers- wish bulldogs were so lucky.

Interesting point about OL depth considering the senior OLmen Danile Inman returns from suspension this weekend. Also, don’t forget we have a few other starters returning from suspension, like Thomas Flowers.
UAB has talent, but UGA defense is too strong. What UGA loses in offense, is made up on special teams, which often times is forgotten. UGA has 2 very talented kickers and a pretty good return game.

Lane4411,
Why don’t you give the defense a little credit for stopping South Carolina. Did that thought ever cross your mind? We should have our depth back with Inman and Smith returning this week. We will be fine.

I think UAB will be our first real test. I’m glad we have a good defense to fall back on. It will be interesting to see how how UGA’s defense plays against a cleaner QB system. It must have been tough having to defend both a BM and a Smelley in one game at Williams Brice. I was there. You could smell the stench from the upperdeck.

“What UGA loses in offense”? Who’s sure we’ve lost anything? I’m not. Dawgs should be aware of and ready for UAB. I’ll bet I know one player who’s studied them this week! Hard fought but the Dawgs cover and have 2 td passes!

UAB will be a tough opponent and Georgia will be ready to play. I predict Stafford will pass for about 300 yards in this one.

The score in 2003 was 16-13 not 13-10. I remember it all too well because the Dawgs lost to the Gators the very next week by the same score 16-13.
I don’t think it will be as close this time. Dawgs shouldn’t be looking ahead to Colorado game and shouldn’t have any reason to be overconfident.
I think that UAB will fall victim to a talented bunch of Dawgs competing to win playing time for later in the schedule; especially at running back and wide receiver. Stafford will be focused on improving his chances of winning the starting job outright.
Fans need to show up and Saturday and pump the team up on Saturday, GO DAWGS!!!

Troy’s “foolhardy” rise has taken a team from winning two Div II national championships to a perennial playoff contender in Div 1-AA to a Div 1-A team that scares the daylights out of teams (see LSU 2004, Miss St 2001, FSU 2006, and a win vs Missouri 2004). Why don’t you do some research before writing filler about which you know nothing?

GTEagle,
No one on here has said we won’t win. We are just giving UAB some credit. I thought you Tech people could read…
As for our offense - the reason we can come onto your blog and boast about beating you is A) we’ve done it for the last 5 years B) Reggie Ball still plays QB for Yech right? and C) by the time we play you, Stafford won’t be a newbie. He’ll have total grasp of the offense and there won’t be as much concern.

I think it’s interesting to see anyone from Tech commenting on an UGA offense that continually beats them. In addition, if Calvin Johnson happens to get hurt or tired (from carrying the offense on his shoulders), Tech’s offensive production will be reduced to something the likes of Florida State’s running game. Just a thought (oh, and i have never talked about kicking anyone’s asses, the score every year does the talking)

Bradley G:
I’m well aware of how Troy has climbed to where it is today. I don’t care how competitive the Trojans may be. I still think going I-A is foolhardy.
As a Troy graduate who occasionally passes through there, I’m appalled that the only discernible difference on campus in the 24 years since I graduated is this faux D-I stadium that sticks out like a sore thumb.
In the long run, Troy can’t compete with FSU, Tech, Nebraska, Miami and a host of other schools it has played to puff itself up, and to cover some of the millions it has spent to pretend to be something it’s not.
But I understand why chasing big bucks and delusions of gridiron grandeur is so captivating. It seems a lot easier than trying to improve the quality of the institution.

I think both GA teams roll this weekend, although the AL teams will put up a fight for about a QTR.
Once the high of getting on the field wears off, the boys from AL will wilt like an 80yo without his viagra.
Defense will be the key for both GA teams as they shut down the opponents and cruise to victory.

Not so fast my friend……You wait and see these games will not be over till the game is over. These alabama teams are tough and will give a good fight. Don’t overlook the lesser oponent or they might be the ones laughing in the finish. I see both teams pulling away in the 4th. Uga might have the easier win of the 2. And might be more like the 3rd quarter.

I agree that UGA will have the easier time of it is this weekend as long as Stafford takes care of business and the D continues their dominance. If Stafford stumbles and UAB gets some momentum then it will be closer than it should be, but in the end the dogs pull it out.
If GT can get a couple of big plays on D early, it will be an easy day for them as well. However, if Troy moves the ball well, it will be a longer day than most would like.
I want both teams to win out so that we can have a big time game at the end of Nov.

I predict UAB will score more points on UGA than South Carolina did. (I also predict South Carolina will go into free fall.) I predict Tech will win handily, although sending Trojans to Georgia Tech is a waste since they’ll never be used. I predict Colorado will lose to Arizona State and be 0-3 for their Athens appearance. I predict Florida easily, and I have no business predicting LSU-Auburn.
UAB and Colorado will be Stafford’s chance to show coaches and fans that no rational person would dare replace him. This is what we wanted and I predict the results will be pleasing to the eye.
I predict Tennessee will be banged up much worse than UGA when UT rolls into Athens …

“Enemy Watchwoman” is a Troy alum who didn’t evem know the school had changed its name? And she expects to be taken seriously? I worry about the statement that she travels through town occasionally, because it’s dangerous to drive with your eyes tightly shut. There are new dorms being built, a brand-new Quad area, new classrooms, parking, and she didn’t even notice. Plus, if EW believes that Troy shouldn’t aspire to progress and shouldn’t have a chance to improve their athletic horizons, I’m not sure she gets the best facet of American life: the right to try. Couple of good one-liners, though, despite being grounded in nothing that even closely resembles fact.

One thing is for sure. UAB is not going to sneak up on the Dawgs like they did on Oklahoma. To begin with, Oklahoma is not that good. Especially with the loss of Rhett Bomar. They struggled with a pretty sorry Washington team last week. The Dawgs will not get caught looking ahead. They will be focused and ready to play. Every Division 1-A team has their share of athletes. The Dawgs have more. Dawgs-31 UAB-13. GO DAWGS!

Don’t think that GT will run through Troy. TROY has an offense that can be really explosive, and a speedy and hard hitting defense to boot. That game against a great FSU team was not a fluke. There was no “FSU pitfall” in that game. FSU had an excellent defense that TROY was able to get about 275 passing yards on, in an offense that can wear out the best of defense. If the GT offense becomes one dimensional, then put GT on an easy upset alert. And don’t think that putting the entire focus on TROY’s passing game will stop them. TROY is capable of getting more rushing yards than passing out of the same quirky formations. This game will be very interesting. Don’t underestimate the TROY TROJANS!!!

The Georgia game will be over by halftime. Inman is the leader of the O-line. They will come out fired up and blow them off the ball. I expect at least 2 maybe 3 backs to get 100 yards on Saturday. As for the Wreck, I hope they are taking Troy lightly. It would be nice to see Troy upset an ACC team.

If you did in fact graduate from there 24 years ago, and all you notice is the stadium, you are as myopic as a wildebeest, and probably with as much deep thought. Since your departure, a new Administration building was built on the Quad and the Quad was re-designed (after Hurricane Opal initiated the demolition); every building on campus has been remodelled at least once; the Sororities are no longer kept in a dorm - they have houses now; a fantastic Softball complex was constructed for our highly competitve Softball team; and it goes on and on and on. Get your head out of the dark crevices and find out what you are talking about before you speak.
And let me offer the public an apology for this pathetic excuse of a “journalist”. This is not the typical graduate of Troy’s journalism school.
As for Troy not competing with the FSUs, LSUs, etc.,….they said the same thing about FSU 20 years ago.

This Troy alum doesn’t even know her Trojan history. She refers to “Division II mediocrity”? Well, Troy won two Division II football National Championships, and two Division II Baseball National Championships and several conference championships in many sports. That is not mediocre.
While it will take a few years until Troy will be considered a top Div. I football program, the move has been beneficial for the University. The school pride that consumes the University on Saturdays in the fall is overwhelming. Troy has gone from 1,500 in attendance to 18,000 and the money that is generated has greatly improved the facilities and stature of the University which I love.

I too, am a Troy alum (‘91-‘97, BME, MSE). I go back quite frequently, taking my students to various School of Music functions. Just like we’re told not to judge a book by it’s cover, don’t look at just the exterior. Smith Hall has undergone a major renovation since you’ve been gone. McCall Hall has added a new wing, new labratories, new classrooms. The Department of Music-now the School of Music. The National Bandmasters Hall of Fame now has a permanent home in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor-rather than the one room it occupied previously. The music department has produced more band directors than any other university since 1965 (yes, I know this isn’t a music blog, but I digress). McCartha Hall is about to out to be demolished and a new education buidling built in its footprint, and a building between McCartha and Wallace has just opened this past fall. The school of Fine Arts consistently produces journalism majors that win national awards, not only in television, but also in print. The school of nursing is one of the most highly-competitive schools in the state, and the Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Med, Business and Computer Science programs are top notch. Maybe they weren’t when you were there, but they were when I was.
The “fight song”…”trumps up more univerisal lyrics”…is that being politcally correct? You don’t even know why or how the fight song was written. I’m not quite sure what Troy you graduated from, but the Troy I graduated from was consitently striving to improve-and doing so on a daily basis. I don’t really understand how you can say you there hasn’t been change…you haven’t taken the time to look. You know, that “faux” D1 stadium that “sticks out like a sore thumb?” That faux stadium brings people to the college-kids that see the team, that see the band, that see college life in general. Those kids that sit in the “faux stadium” (my son included) are the future of your alma mater.
Troy will grow into it’s own personality as a D-1 school-so it’s history isn’t as grand as UGA or Tech. So what if it started as Troy Normal School, and as a teacher’s school? FSU was a school for women in its infancy. Give the university time, and it will reach its potential.

Wow, some long posts, I’ll keep this simple.
I am a UGA fan, here is the skinny on both games.
UAB is tough, but outmatched overall by UGA. It will not be an easy game, especially with a freshman in (or it could be his breakout game). UAB is supposedly in a rebuilding year, but they are playing tough as usual, but they are not all-around tough, weak special teams and a suspect D.
As for Tech, as much as it pains me to say, am I the only one who saw their D against ND? No doubt, Troy runs the “every formation in the book offense”, but in the end, Tech’s D will win that battle.
As for Tech’s offense, Calvin Johnson… why is there even a blog? (the one man show won’t help them beat UGA, but Troy is in for trouble)

Watchwoman:
If your comments about your alma mater were not so pathetic and inaccurate, they might be funny.
I can count off the top of my head a handful of major construction projects on the quaint, friendly and, yes, even exciting Troy campus since we both spent time there: stadium (one of the nicest, albeit it not largest, in the state); new state-of-the-art science building; construction of a new state-of-the-art classroom building; renovation of the student union building; construction of a new administration building; current construction of four new dorm-suite towers; new baseball stadium (about to undergo second expansion); renovation of the basketball arena (soon to be replaced by a larger, modern facility); new track and field/soccer stadium; renovation of several dorm buildings and more.
Troy remains one of the nicest campuses in the state and is considered a good college buy by U.S. News & World Report. Many of my Troy friends have major positions with major corporations and consider their years in little old Troy a blessing.
As for playing with the big boys, Troy has been doing that for four or more years - defeating Mississippi State, Missouri (then No. 17) and Marshall (twice), as well as most SunBelt teams. Last weekend wasn’t the first time (you probably don’t remember LSU two years ago) Troy had a lead over a top-10 team in the late fourth quarter.
Perhaps if you had paid any attention to your alma mater in the news or sports pages, on the Internet or on numerous message boards, you might have known about the name change - which was to better reflect Troy’s non-Alabama students and funding. But, considering how you feel about Troy, why bother to keep up with your old school?
I would encourage you to come back some weekend (and be surprised at the atmosphere), but considering the elitist BCS hack that you have become … naaah!

8 of 19, 171 yards, 1 TD and 3 INT’s 15 of 24, 147 yards, 0 TD and 1 INT

Your response “I guess I went to Troy in the Dark ages” shows how off you still are. WOW there are some real inferiority complexes with the people at TROY. I never knew that they had such a good music dept. I am sure some real world leaders will come out of that. Silver Spoon in our mouths? NO just hard work. BTW - I drive by Troy when I go to the redneck riviera, it has a nice sign. Saying that your school is a good buy is like saying there is a sale at Wal-Mart.
I think UGAs music dept is great too. The biggest difference is that the classes are taught in smokey bars by people who are really committed to music!! But I digress.
FYI - Ball played a highly ranked Auburn team in his freshman start. Did he develop - no. I think the point to listing the stats was - don’t hang your hat on this freshman so quick. Stafford played a USC team that is not very good this year. There was very little pressure, and he still didn’t put up very good numbers. Stafford is playing another crappy team this weekend, so you really won’t be able to tell much about his performance under pressure. And another crappy team next weekend. I think the true test comes against UT - Then make your decision about his performance.

Since you seem to think Troy was in the “dark ages” when you were there, how much time, effort and money have you given back to the school to help advance them to a higher level? You obviously look down your nose at the the school from which you earned your degree, thereby giving you this space from which you spout off unsupported remarks.
Are you aware Troy is the second largest distance learning institution in the world? Are you aware that Troy is providing opportunities for our soldiers in the Middle East the opportunity to continue working on their education while being deployed? Are you aware of anything about Troy since you left 24 years ago?

Watchwoman, kind of nasty in your opening comments about your own alma mater, only to back off. What, you weren’t expecting that your fellow handout-degree-holders of Troy would be literate enough to read this rotgut and be able to respond to it? Seems like you have a chip on your shoulder. Geez, what happened to you while were here? Did you try out for a sorority and not get picked by anyone? Run for SGA president and get 5 total votes? Or did you just eat a bad plate of spaghetti over at the cafeteria?
Anyway, why is everyone assuming this person is a journalism major? Maybe she just knew somebody up there who owed her a favor. I have a journalism minor from Troy and I honestly don’t see how she made it through that minefield (oh, that’s right, we just hand diplomas out down here). I know how difficult Troy’s journalism program can be to complete. Although just a minor, I sat in many a classroom with egotistical, hardcore journalism majors and witnessed them being cut down to size after getting ‘D’s and ‘F’s when they thought they had ‘A’s coming. Many of them were reduced to tears after getting bad grades and being openly scolded in class before all their peers. One Troy instructor I had would issue an automatic ‘F’ just for spelling someone’s name incorrectly. So when I see Ms. Watchwoman’s total lack of concern for getting her facts straight, it seems like those drill seargeant/professors I had to navigate through to graduate would have eaten someone like her for breakfast.
Now, for the truth about Troy’s campus from someone who has lived in Troy for 34 years and grew up right down the street from the university, not some blogger in an ivory tower up in Atlanta who wants to be able to brag to her northern-implant buddies at the next cocktail party about how she dogged her rebel flag-waving, backwoods alma mater. Every corner of this campus has been altered in one way or another since 1982. There are new administration buildings, new modern classrooms and stadium-seat lecture halls, a brand new quad, an improved Student Rec Center with new eating establishments and a Barnes and Noble bookstore, a new music/marching band museum. Yes, an enlarged football stadium, which had 25,000 people in it to see us play a 1-AA team two weeks ago, but also a new soccer field, tennis courts, softball fields and a refurbished baseball complex. Because of our move up in athletics, many of these facelifts were made possible. And we have a new name (is it the school’s fault you didn’t know about the name change or your own? Seems like maybe you should pay closer attention). Takes some nerve to rant on like you have about your own school’s shortcomings when you obviously haven’t contributed any donations yourself (just your kind, encouraging, supportive words to offer, Ms. Watchwoman?). Have you even set foot on this campus within the last 10 years? Apparently not, since you can’t even keep up with current basic news like the name change of the entire system. Ah, such is the beauty of the blog. Any idiot can say anything and have the whole world read it and think of it as hard fact. But we won’t let pesky little facts get in the way, will we? Where did this lady intern, the Weekly World News?
Win or lose tomorrow, ma’am, you stink. And quit telling everyone you are a Troy graduate. You are hurting the university’s credibility.

This man has done nothing but have his butt on his shoulders from the time he could not finish the drill as a player vs. GEORGIA so he b*** and moans to get back in the mould in the sec after dicking over Florida because he is a egotistical S.O.B

There must be two Troy State University campuses in Troy! I was at Troy from 1980-1984. I am very proud of my time there and the sweat that I put in for my degree. I even went back for my Master’s Degree. I personally would prefer that she no longer claim to be a Troy Alumni. By the way, my son is a sophomore there now. Troy gives now and always has given a quality academic program! Go Trojans! Blow SOTS!

Wow, i’m not even going to comment on the school bashing, but the actual article is pitiful. I actually dont belive this person went to college, i’ve seen middle schoolers write better than this.

If you want to trash Troy that’s fine. You’re entitled to your opinion. I would ask, however, that you get your facts straight. Troy won an NAIA national championship in 1968. Then in 1984 and 1987 Troy won the Division II national championship. Troy has never won a Division I-AA national championship.
