Grumpy Gators
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
OK, Bowzers. Relax. Sit back and relax. Sit. Sit, doggie, sit!
Good boys.
Now repeat after me: Georgia is good about banding together. They will be all right.
The first sentence comes from Lou Holtz. Wait, he picked his ex-Chickens to beat the Dawgs. Never mind. The second sentence is courtesy of Kirk Herbstreit. Lee Corso might have said something along the same lines, but Enemy Watch was too busy watching the White Sox bullpen mow down the Astros.
(Why can’t our bullpen do that? Leo? Did you hear that? Leo? Where are you?)
Oh, where was I? Yes. About the Dawgs, probably minus Shockley for Flower-duh next week. Now calm down, Red and Black Nation, because the fine pundits at ESPN think you’re going to be just fine. Maybe.
You are fourth-ranked team in the country. You are in the driver’s seat, with the disheveled Swampsters and their new coach crying alligator tears. The Not-So-Evil Genius had to hustle to put away Vanderbilt.
And your stand-in quarterback, Tereshinski-Krzyzewski-Pierzynski-Kovalchuk, did fine after Shockley hobbled toward the hedges with an MCL knee sprain. The prognosis is that he might be ready for Auburn, which is making its field goal kicker walk home from Baton Rouge after going 1-for-6, including a clanger off the left upright in overtime Saturday.
Yes, the fever pitch at the Gator Bowl, er, Alltel-Youtel-Wealltel-That’sswel Stadium, will be high. So will be the levels of inebriation on both sides of the aisle by the 3:30 kickoff. And after. Enemy Watch has no petty cash fund to finance a trip to the JAX she so richly deserves. So she is pouting about having to perform extra duty for a game she cannot see in person.
But duty does call, and the idlin’ Gators have been doing more than crying. Their legions are rather grumpy and apoplectic about what Shockley’s injury might mean for their chances of staying in the SEC East hunt. Some are suspicious D.J. may play after all. If I’m Mark Richt, I want Jim Mora giving injury updates this week.
A few fan predictions are already heating up and it’s no consolation to them that the anemic Gators have plenty of company with their spread offense springing a Leak. Urban Legend? Bah! Meyer’s playbook is in the boonies right now.
Otherwise, not a lot on the Gator front for the moment. Everybody’s either fleeing another hurricane or playing golf. Ah, another bye week in paradise.

This is Good vs Evil, Arrogance vs Humility, Beach Bums vs Southern Boys, Us vs Them. This is THE GAME EVERY YEAR, no matter what their rankings or records are. This is the only game of the year in any sport that I cant even have food in my stomach while Im watching. I hardly ever enjoy this game because the outcome means so much. Im a BULLDOG imprisoned below the enemy line. I live in Orlando. Imagine living among Gators all year long. This is more than a game, its the making of either a year of satisfaction or agony of Gator gloating which feels like having heart surgery without anesthesia. In 1 week tears will again fall, either of joy or sadness. But surely not sadness this year. Last year started a new era. The temper fit visor boy era was broken and now its our turn for dominance. But whatever happens Ill always be a DAWG!!!!

I am worried without Shockley. Joe threw some pretty good balls and some others looked kind of scary. If Joe is the guy I think we have to show that Joe can move with the ball too. He moved well in the pocket, shifting away from pressure, except of course when he didn’t see the CB about knock his block off. I still feel the Dawgs can and should win this on the backs of the D. With some big time players coming back on D, our offense just has to be timely and not make mistakes. I will start praying once I finish typing this post! GO Dawgs!!!

Thanks for that link to the Gator board. I was wondering what they were saying. Which turns out to be very civilized and wishing no ill will at all upon DJ. It just reinforces how I have always felt; Georgia fans don’t hate their rivals, we just hate Tennessee.
Wendy, if Florida is paradise then I must be dead and in heaven and if so where are all these virgins Osama talks about?

Does anyone remember the ‘98 FSU/ UF Game when Richt was the head coach at FSU? I think on paper they called him the offensive coordinator. Funny, the program hasn’t been the same since he and Amato (Asst. Head Coach) left. Anyway, let me refresh your memories. FSU loses Weinke from a devastating neck injury, and then loses #2 QB Dan Kendra, who would make a comeback in ‘99 as a FB, and has to settle with #3 QB Marcus “The Rooster” Outzen. The UF team they faced that year wasn’t coached by the Urban Myth, but by the guy that Will Rogers never met. Richt scaled back the playbook for Outzen and made sure that he didn’t lose the game. They kept the offense simple, and let the D win the game. By the way, the plan failed against UT in the NC Game when Outzen threw a game deciding pick, handing UT a NC.
The Dawgs will be just fine. No worries in Dawg Nation. Keep it simple, play for field position, and attack on defense (With a mostly healthy defense). Look for guys like Ely-Kelso to be an MVP candidate. And remember coaches, both teams that have beaten the Gators this season have sent the house on various blitz packages the entire game. We haven’t done much of that this year. Don’t hold anything back in this game. Keep Leak confused and scared, and whatever you do, don’t allow anymore of those annoying little bubble screens they like to use against us.
The Dawgs will prevail Saturday. Injuries are part of the game, it’s a physical sport. That’s why recruiting and the concept of building a program is so important. Richt has done that. Go Dawgs!!

DJ will be fine. What are the symptoms of a medial collateral ligament injury? The most common symptom following a medial collateral ligament injury is pain directly over the ligament. If only the MCL is injured, walking is usually not a problem, and athletes are often able to return to competition. Swelling directly over the torn ligament may appear, and bruising and generalized joint swelling are common 1 to 2 days after the injury.

Oh GA fans, you are just pathetic please cant you tell fact from fiction, without D.J. you have absolutely no chance to win the game, gators will win hands down you just hoping for a miracle to happen. I watched the Arkansas game. man that kid McFadden made you look more like puppies. He walked all over you. Just prepare yourself for a devastating defeat, just stay home. Go Gators!!!!!

Whether or not Shockley can play (and pray to God that he can), at least UF and the Urban Myth have to game plan for two different QBs. Hopefully that will keep them on their toes. Also what is the status for Milner, Taylor, Goldston, and Anderson. I thought that Goldston is supposed to be out untill Auburn, but hopefully not. (We sure missed those guys up the middle in stopping McFadden).

The sad part about this whole situation is that it was caused by Richt’s typical bad play calling. Again! The QB draw on 3rd and long? Are you kidding me? Put the damn ball up and give your receivers a chance to make the play. Worst case, you throw it out of bounds and punt. I’d like to know the odds of the QB draw working on 3rd and 14. Maybe 5%?

Impressive classy coments from the Gators on their blog. I guess we just get the Lunatic Fringe posting over here.
One thing you can count on, win or lose, Urban will need a hanky. If he is the prototype of the new, sensitive coach, give me back Erk Russell.

Dawgs Are Done
No way in hell Georgia wins without Shockley. Though Florida’s offense has struggled, Leak doesn’t throw picks and Florida doesn’t turn the ball over. Like Arkansas, Florida will be able to run on Georgia, especially with Georgia banged up on defense. Shockley was the leader and Georgia is used to his style. Tereshinski showed he was unable to move the ball. This Florida team has its best defense since the mid-`90’s. If you look on the surface, Florida’s two losses have come vs. two top-10 teams on the road. Records are thrown out with this game, Florida is (13-2) vs. Georgia since 1990 and Richt had a losing record vs. Zook. Florida, having two weeks to prepare, having had some players heal from injuries will be fresh. If Florida gets up early, even by 10 points, it’s over as Georgia hasn’t been down all year and with an unproven qb who has never played in a game of this magnitude. Forget about it. Gators Roll!

Hey Ginger, you just proved everything I said earlier. And for your unformation if we end up needing a miracle sometimes we do get them. (Belue to Scott) Ask you daddy about that. I do like your just stay home comment though. Im sure Bulldawg Nation would love to only have to cross the enemy state line every other year if the Lizard Nation would come to Atlanta. Oops sorry, I forgot the Canes took yall to school there last year. Coach Richt has Miami & FSU history so Im sure he has the same “love” for your Gators as us fans. Even though we dont really like yall, we do respect you. At least its an SEC game and the rest of the country should take a lesson on what a TRUE rivalry is.

VKTOR- THE CHANCE OF A QUARTERBACK DRAW ON 3RD AND 14 WITH MOST QUARTERBACKS IS NOMINAL-BETTER THAN 5%.WITH DJ IT’S A WHOLE LOT BETTER. IT JUST AMAZES ME AS I READ THESE COMMENTS HOW MANY WHINERS ARE OUT THERE; WHAT AWFUL CALLS RICHT MAKES. I THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD CALL-AND AMAZINGLY ENOUGH I THOUGHT THE CALL AGAINST AUBURN IN 2001 WAS GOOD-TRYING TO CATCH THEM OFF GUARD. JUST BECAUSE A PLAY DOESN’T WORK DOESN’T MEAN IT WAS A BAD CALL. THE OTHER TEAM MAY HAVE JUST MADE A GOOD DEFENSIVE PLAY.

The Dawgs will be fine against Florida with Joe T taking snaps. Give the Pious Genius and the rest of the coaching staff a week to draw up plays for Joe, give Joe a week of taking all the snaps at practice, and most importantly let the shock of losing Shockley dissipate and the Dawgs will have another win on the road to the Rose Bowl. Remember our defense is what wins games for us. Under Richt we are something like 50-0 when we score 18 or more points in a game. Taylor and Anderson will be back and Gant is doing a fine job filling in for Golston. The Dawgs are a solid disciplined senior laden team that will respond when the gauntlet is thrown. With DJ we win by 20, with Joe T we win by 10. Go Dawgs!!!

I don’t know if we can beat a well rested Fla team with Joe T and a banged up team, BUT…
What a great story it would make for the 3rd generation bulldawg back up to come in and lead this team to an SEC East Championship and a chance of an undefeated season!
We have got to have a running game. And I think this last game will serve to wake up the O-line. I think our Defense will do well against this Fla attack. Special teams will be solid. Coutu is Money! Ely-Kelso would be a great back-up LB!
There is no sense in being tight about this one, which was my fear last week. Here’s to a loose team laying it on the line when not many think they can get it done.

This old dog knows that there is no shame in losing to a tough SEC opponent, and both teams will tighten up the old chin straps Saturday and get it on. My only complaint is that I can’t hate UF as much now that the Evil Steve is gone, and he now has his just desserts. The only things worse than Hell is Columbia, SC and Gamecock football.

Do you guys remember the statement US Captain Ben Crenshaw made a few years back on the eve of the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history? With the whole world assuming that the US was done, he said “There is something special about this group, and I just have a good feeling about tomorrow.” Well, that’s how I feel about this Georgia team in 2005. No worries. Joe T is the man. I can’t imagine a better candidate to lead these guys in war than a 3rd generation Dawg. We should be honored to have him. This game with Joe T at the helm will go down in Bulldog folklore like Auburn ‘02, GA/FL ‘80, Appleby to Washington ‘75, Hobnail boot, etc. Get ready Dawg fans, something special is about to happen. Go Dawgs!!

More important to me than Shock being out is the defensive guys coming back, sounds like with the the possible exception of Dixson we will have everyone available, now whether they are close to 100% is questionable. I didn’t think Joe T was all that bad against Arkansas, on the pick, MM ran a bad route and he only threw nine balls. I put that on Richt. I don’t have a feeling yet if we can pull this one out. An interesting game, one where if we score over 18, I think Richt runs his record in those games to 46-0. The question is for me, can we score over 18?

I love GA-FLA weekend. This will be my 10th trip and i am only 22. So really it is my 2nd trip if you know what i mean. Shockley hurt only adds to the excitement leading up to kick-off. I know some FLA fans and to a person they said that GA was probably going to kick their a$$. I’m sure they are feeling a little more confident now. I can’t wait! See yall there! QB or no QB there are two vitally important keys to this game, and neither of them have to do with the trash from Gainsville. Key 1: the Georgia offensive line. With one of the top rushing attacks in the nation and a pocket passer in the game, these experienced guys have to be at their best. if they aren’t, then either Tereshinski is sacked a record 25 times or none of our running backs rushes for more than 20 yards. Key 2: UGA’s defense. If we play to Florida’s offense, which is stopping up the gut rushes and playing hard coverage on the outside we’ll be fine. We have to cause turnovers and try to keep the gators out of the redzone, but that will be hard considering our our two starting defensive tackles are out and one of the backups is playing hurt as well as our linebacker issues. Richt has got to hand it to Joe-T this week in practice or all hell’s going to break loose in Jacksonville this weekend…..I’ll be at work this weekend so for y’all going down there drink a few for me…..lata

You know you are out of ammo when you have to resort to bringing up OTHER team’s victories vs the gators. Please tell me about UGA’s wins vs the Gators over the last 15 years. It should not take long.
Before you bring up pre-1990, I did not hear any complaining from the dawgs about traveling to Jax before you started losing almost every year.
Get a runway long enough to handle a real airplane up there in athens and the trip won’t be so bad.

Cheer up DAWG fans! We have alot of positive things on our side. We have shown this year we are more than a one man team than any other year. Tereshinksi has been in the system for 4 years, knows the playbook, and will be fine, as evidenced by his flashes of greatness against ARK when asked to come in on a whim. Remember GA plays better when faced with adversity, they are more focused, and we are a 5.5 point underdog. How many times have the DAWGS played better as the underdog w/ the ‘us against them’ mentality? Besides, we have been spoiled with Greene staying healthy his four years. This is the first time since Quincy Carter went down and Cory Phillips had to take over have we had this situation with the back-up becoming the starter. At least now, we can get Joe T. some experience, in a HUGE game no less, going into next season without all DAWG fans wondering how Joe T. will be without having played an entire game. He will have all week to practice with the first teamers, too. We’ve got a great coach, a great bunch of blue-collar team mates that band together, arm in arm, and their grit will bring them together to support their 3rd generation Bulldog QB in a win that will not only clinch the east, but give Mark Richt his 50th win as Bulldogs coach! What a way to achieve that milestone win - against the hated Gators!

Wow! You bulldogs will argue with anyone, even yourselves. I think everyone should calm down and let the teams do the talking on the field. I know there are classy dawg fans out there, but where are they? Let’s slow down and use spell check before hitting that little gray “post” button. Come on, how many times have you seen Congrads written on anything, in case you don’t have a dictionary present or you didn’t get a graduation card, it’s CongraTulations. On to the redneck comments, I would like to say that I have seen just as many “rednecks” up here in Georgia as I did in Florida. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black, I’ve NEVER seen so many rebel flags and mullets as I have in the 5 years I’ve lived up here, seriously! And jean shorts, riiiiight… no bulldog fan ANYWHERE in the state of GA or in the USA has EVER worn jean shorts… you keep telling yourself that and maybe you’ll sleep better tonight. Why don’t you find something new to talk about? How is it that you think Georgia is any less “southern” and/or “redneck” than Florida? I mean do you really know the populations stats on Florida versus those of Georgia? I doubt you see many mullets/rebel flags south of Ocala… Miami, Naples, Boca Raton, W. Palm, not a chance. Okay for the “record” people, I know UGA holds the overall record over UF and I’m okay with that. But I’m 27, and for as long as I have remembered caring who beat whom, Florida is holding the cards at 13 of the last 15. It doesn’t really matter does it? In the grand scheme of things no, there is more to life than UGA v. UF, I certainly don’t plan my entire life around a yearly trip to Jax, but I know that many people do. I mean we all still dislike (hate is such a strong word) UT, so at least we have that in common, right? Jax v. Atl - I’m all for rotating the site, but it’s not on the schedule, so live with it. Do you think it will matter WHERE the game is played? Will you have an edge if you played in Atlanta? Maybe the first year, because you’d be so pumped up for a “home” game… I can see that. But on a whole, will it really make a difference, I sincerely doubt it. And there will be just as many Gator fans there as there is in Jax, so that won’t matter. In the end, we all should just have a little more class… this goes for Gators and Dawgs alike. We are not children, so why act like children? Let’s just enjoy a fabulous weekend, cheer for our #1 team, and act like human beings. We have all had that “long drive home” at one time or another… let’s just make sure that we remember that it’s just a game and the good thing for both teams is, there’s always next year, it’s not the end of the world!!
Good luck to both teams and …. GO GATORS! From a true Gator, Deep in Enemy Territory! UF grad, 2000

“Wow! You bulldogs will argue with anyone, even yourselves”
Bless your heart, those are just some family squabbles you don’t need to be concerning yourself with.
Now as far as your comment that you have seen just as many rednecks up in Georgia as you have seen in Florida; I will admit that, there has been a few more rednecks moving into our fine state than we’d like to really see, you understand I’m sure. Now a redneck will really stick out in a room full of Georgia crackers so, it only seems to you that, you have actually spotted the number of rednecks, you think you have and the actual number is quite smaller than you might think.
Now I know as funny as it may seem to you, it is a documented fact that not a single Georgia Bulldogs’ fan has ever worn a pair of jean shorts and bless your heart for pointing out what you see as a lack of class among a few of our fans.
We do want to thank you for taking the time to visit with us and we’ll be seeing you on Saturday now and until then, you have yourself a good week, ya hear?

David, you are the biggest knucklehead ive seen post on here so far. I dont watch many games that have florida as one of the teams but im pretty sure Leak has thrown some picks, and florida has turned the ball over. Also since records dont count, dont bring up the past about 13-2 in the gators favor. Oh yea, Richt was a quarterback himself and has coached a couple of QB’s to a NC so I wouldnt get all exicited about Joe T not having experience. Go back to smoking crack and learn about your own team before you comment.
