Vinny’s Single-Engine Jets
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For those of you who have lived in Atlanta since before Gwinnett County was designated the epicenter of the metro area, you also may remember seeing these billboards shading nearly virtually every Waffle House in town:
“Fly Delta’s Jets”
Given the current state of both the local airline and the New York (New Jersey?) AFC team, I’m not inclined to buy a ticket to ride on the former or place betting dollars on the latter.
The gridiron Jets come limping in to Atlanta for Monday night’s game on the dodgy knees of 41-year-old Vinny Testaverde, enlisted out of retirement after a season-ending injury to Chad Pennington. They’re 2-4 following a loss to Buffalo, suffering only slightly less than their perennially masochistic fans who got the predictable miserable treatment at the other end of New York State.
It hasn’t been a pleasant fall off the field for the secondary occupant of Giants Stadium, who are suing the owners of Madison Square Garden for allegedly sabotaging the 2012 Olympics and an accompanying Manhattan stadium that might have been the Jets’ new home.
The Jets now have lost their starting center for the season, which has had something to do with the tempered treatment from the generally unforgiving New York media.
Even the often caustic talk radio environment has been relatively calm, as WFAN hosts Mike and the Mad Dog batted eyelashes at Vinny in a Monday interview.
This lack of snarling has robbed Enemy Watch of ripe blogging material. On the other hand, it was Falcons coach Jim Mora impersonating a Rottweiler when a New York sportswriter asked how Michael Vick’s career was progressing. Mora’s about three cans shy becoming another Big Tuna, judging by this eyebrow-burning retort.
Jets fans are torn between two psyches: staying patient with a team that has gone to the playoffs three of the last four years under coach Herman Edwards, or resorting back to fantasyland, lamenting what might have been.
And Enemy Watch never knew that Nick Nolte and Dagwood Bumpstead were Jets fans.
Then again, they’re everywhere, even here in the ATL, carpetbagging in the Carpetbagging Capital of America. Welcome South, Brethren. Just stay away from Gwinnett traffic.

Wendy,
Where ya been. Havent seen you’re blog for awhile.
Thank you for using the term Carpetbag Capital. That is sure what the Atl has become. If the long term locals dont take over their season tickets, we are going to have lots of games like a couple weeks ago where masses exit early. Now that the Dome is rockin’ dont want it to turn into another Turner Field because of the transients.

Wendy,
Your articles are getting better and better each week. However, I want to point out that the Falcons should not take any team for granted. Despite how banged up they are or how old their quarterback is. Just remeber that a wounded dog can be the most vicious.
